UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. HARMONY, OF SIDNEY, OHIO.
COM POSITO RS TYPE-CASE STAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,243, dated February 13, 1883.
Application filed August 11, 1852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, WILLIAM P. HARMONY, of Sidney, in the county of Shelby and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Compositors Type Case Stand; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad totheaccomnanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in compositors type-ease stands, and has for its objectto enable the adjustment of the stand to the desired inclination to suit the convenience of the compositor and the iuclosing of the case or cases to protect the same from dust or dirt when not in use.
It has for its object, further, to also efiect the vertical adjustment of the stand to adapt it to the height of the compositor.
Great difiiculty has heretofore been experienced in obtaining the required inclination for the case to suit the convenience of the compositor, and the standsas previously constructed made no provision for protecting the case or cases from dust or dirt.
The nature of my invention consists in the employ ment of asliding pivoted leaf in connection with telescope-jointed rods or legs pivoted to the legs of the stand.
It consists, also, in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinaftcr more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved com positors typecase stand, showing the parts as arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof in a closed position. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same.
In carrying out my invention I employ uprights or standards A, those at each side consisting preferably of a single piece, a, having upward diverging arms a, which are secured at their upper ends to each side of the cap or receptacle B. These arms may be braced at their spread-apart ends, as shown, or in any other suitable manner. The lower ends ofthe standards or legs A are each fitted to slide between the upper convergent ends of feet A, suitably secured together. The same ends of these standards or legs are provided withracks b on one side, with which engage pinions b on a rod or shaft, b which has a fixed .tected from dust or dirt settlingthereon.
(No model.)
hat, I), at or about its middle. In the center of the lower end of each leg A is a slot, 0, through which and the uniting-piece of the legs passes a nutted bolt, 01.
It will be 011-,
served that by first loosening the nuts of the J said bolts and applying a wrench to the fixed nut of the rod carrying the pinions, gearing with the racks of the legs of the stand, the latter can be readily raised or lowered according to the height of the compositor or person using the case placed in the cap supported thereon. After obtaining the proper adjustment the nuts of the bolts d are again tightened to hold the receptacle, with the case, firmly in position.
The cap or receptacle'B has .a'cover, B, formed of an oblique section thereof, the section being taken obliquely through the same from the lower front. edge to about the middle of the upper side or top of the cap or receptacle, as clearly shown in the two figures of the drawings. This construction specially adapts the cap or receptacle for use in holding a compositors type case or cases, as, when the cover is opened back upon the cap or receptacle, it is adapted to support the upper case in an inclined position, as seen in Fig. 1,
for convenience in reaching the type, which it is intended to hold.
The upper type-case, O, is designed to slide and rest upon rails on the inside of the cap or receptacle B when the same is out of use, it only being necessary to lower its upper edge below the top of the cap or receptacle, and then pushit into the latter, as seen in Fig. 2.
The lower type-case, D, is supported upoii a leaf or shelf, E, as clearly seen in Fig. 1, and, with the shelf or leaf, is capable of being slid, like the upper type-case, into the cap or receptacle B when necessary or not in use. When the type-cases are thus slid into the receptacle and the cover closed, they will be pro- The leaf or shelf E is pivoted to the cap or receptacle with its pivots passing through parallel slots 0, made in the sides of the cap or receptaclenear their bottom edges, as seen in Fig. l, and extending nearly the entire length of said sides. This arrangement permits the aforesaid movement of the shelter leaf with the lower type-case.
The front edge of the shelf or leaf E is supported upon telescope-jointed rods or legs F F, the uppersections, F, thereof being pivoted or connected to the sides of the said leaf or shelf, and the lower sections, F, to the sides of the legs or standards A. These sections are capable of sliding one Within the other and of being secured together by set or adjusting screws f. The purpose of this arrangement is to enable the adjustmentof the leaf or shelf E and its type-case at the inclination to suit the convenience of the compositor.
It will be seen that the foregoing obviates all difficulty in setting the type-cases at the desired angle of inclination and the blocking up of the legs to elevate the stand, or the use of a platform or other means to elevate the position of the compositor or workman to accommodate the height of the latter to the typeoases.
Having" thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a compositor-s type-case stand. the combination, with the cap or receptacle B and the standards or legs A, of the pivoted sliding leaf or shelf E and the telescope-jointed legs I or rods F F and their holding or adjusting screws, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a compositors typecase stand, the combination, with the cap or receptacle 13, having the slots 0 in its sides, extending nearly from end to end thereof, of the pivoted leaf or shelf E, with its pivots adapted to move in said slots, and the telescoped leg or standard sections F F, pivoted to said leaf and to the legs A of the cap or receptacle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the cap or receptacle B, having a cover, B, formed of an oblique section thereof, and the sliding leaf or shelt'E, supported in its extended position by means of vertically-adjustable standards or supports F F, the cap or receptacle B being supported upon verticallyadjustable legs A, capable of retention at any desired point of elevation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
