WEATHERSTRIPPING GUIDE MARKER FOR DOOR JAMBS Filed Oct. 50, 1952' O I a 1 37 INVENTOR. ROBERT E. FR/SBEE BY M i M HIS ATTORNEY United States Patent,
My inventionirelates ot the art of Weatherstripping, and more particularly to means for Weatherstripping doors with" metal Weatherstrip, Heretofore, the application of such- Weatherstrip to' doors entailed a combination of skill and guesswork, as it is essential in such installations, to realize proper fit between the strip appliedto 'the door and the cocoperating strip applied to the door j,amb.. The; labor and time, at present involved, are attributable largely to thedilficulty of properly orienting the cooperating strip with respect to the first applied strip, so that when securely fastened in position, it will, with assurance, fit properly alongside the other ship when the door is swing to its closed position. Among the objects of my invention are: p ('l) T 0- provide a novel and improved means for Weatherstripping doorsandt-he like;
('2) To provide a novel and improved means for accurately locating the cooperating Weatherstrip with respect to that applied to. the door,.to..assure proper and efiicient cooperation between the two strips, in. opening and closing such door;
;( r i eailie and hir v dfi s;stran l construction for enabling one to accurately locate the cooperating Weatherstrip of a Weatherstripping installation for doors and the like.
Additional objects of my invention will be brought out in the following description of a preferred embodiment of the same, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l is a side elevational view of the device employed in carrying out the method of the present invention;
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the device of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view depicting a type of Weatherstripping installation to which the present invention pertains;
Figure 4 is a view depicting the manner in which the present invention may be carried into practice;
Figure 5 is a view illustrating the application of the invention in the Weatherstripping of a door or the like;
Figure 6 is a view in section, taken in the plane 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings for details of the means and method of applying my invention in its preferred form, said invention contemplates the utilization of a marking device 3 for locating the position of a cooperating strip in relationship to a previously applied strip.
Such device involves a casing 7 formed of thin sheet material by bending a short strip thereof into U-shape. Into this casing is slidably inserted a marking element 9 involving a short strip 11 of material of a thickness slightly less than the interior of the casing, to enable the said marking element to be thus slidably inserted therein. Such marking element may be formed of wood, plastic or metal, and to the exposed edge thereof is preferably afiixed, as by gluing, a thin layer 13 of stamp material such as rubber.
This marking element is resiliently cushioned in the casii g; Withthe' layer of stamp material protruding-ther from, the cushioning means preferably involving a bowed leaf spring 15 disposed in the casing below and in contact with the marking element. Such leaf spring is preferably anchored in position by bringing each end 17 thereof out through the end of the casing and hooking the same unden n'ea-th the bottom thereof.
To retainthemarking element within the casing and preclude. itslo's's therefrom, the marking element is preferably formed with an extension 19 at each of its lower corners, andthe casing at each of its upper corners is preferably bridged, as by pinching the edges thereof to gether, or bridging the space between the upper edges at each corner'by a' fi'ap ortab-Z l.
Extending to one side of the casing 'is a positioning spring 23, which may be 'an'chored'at one end to the easing, as by welding orsold'ering the same to the lower-edge thereof;
The type of Weatherstripping installation to wliichtlre present invention relates, in particular, involves the use of Weatherstri'pf2'5 formed from a thin metal strip folded to a V-sh-a"pe in section and provided with a perforated anchoring flange 27 along one edge.
In weatherstripping a door with such Weatherstrip, both the upper edge and front edge of the door are rabbeted to form a corner ed ge groove 28 having aninner wall 29 paralleling-the edge of the door; In this groove, along the edge of the door, is nailed a length 31 of weatherstrip, thus leaving space between it and the groove wall tore'ceive', when the door is closed, a similar and cooperati-ng strip .33 which. is nailed in a corresponding edge groove 35formed-in the doorjarnb37. jEo, properly .andaccurately orient this cooperating strip has been. the-,problenr in-thepast, as it is not readily; accesa s'ible thejclosedposition of the door,.to accurately-1Q: t- .e PFQPsFEPP tiQ Pish. st -1 Thro h-amuse of the marking device of the present invention, such problem no longer exists, for the exact location of the second or cooperating strip can now be accurately determined, and in advance of its application.
This is accomplished by disposing a plurality of the marking devices of the present invention against the wall 29 of the groove in which the door strip has been placed, said marking devices being retained in such position by the positioning spring which bears against the door strip. By applying ink, paint or some other suitable marking ingredient or compound to the stamp surface of the marking element, and then closing the door, short guide lines or marks will be stamped on the door jamb, and these will serve as an accurate guide for locating the strip to be applied to the door jamb.
In a similar manner, the Weatherstrip 39 which is usually applied to the jamb adjacent the hinge end of the door, may be also accurately located. Such strip usually projects from the jamb in a direction normal thereto and into a groove 41 formed in the hinge edge of the door. To accurately locate the position of such strip, a plurality of the marking devices may be disposed in such groove and the door closed, following the application of some suitable marking ingredient or compound to the marking element. Thereafter upon opening the door, suitable guide marks will appear imprinted upon the door jamb, and these will serve to accurately locate the Weatherstrip which is to be applied thereto.
From the foregoing description of my improved mark ing guide and the method employed in its use for the Weatherstripping of doors or the like, it will be apparent that the problem of installing such Weatherstripping has been reduced to a simple procedure and one which will assure accurate positioning of the cooperating weatherstrips. Trial and error and guesswork are eliminated 3 and, the time required for an installation will have been materially shortened.
Accordingly, while I have disclosed my invention in its preferred form and in considerable detail, the same is subject to alteration and modification without departing from theunderlying principles involved, and I, accordingly, do not desire to be limited in my protection to such details, except as may be necessitated by the appended claims.
I claim;
