Description

Feb. 14, 1939. v A q; ANTON 2,147,511
DOWEL CENTER MARKER I Original Filed April 9, 1937 A iiorneys Patented Feb. 14, 1939 DOWEL CENTER MARKER Archie 0. Anton, Sheldon, Iowa Application April 9, 1937, Serial No. 136,029 Renewed July 12, 1938 1 Claim. (01. 33-191) This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in means whereby marks can be conveniently made in wood and like substance for the purpose of boring holes for dowels, etc.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a dowel center marker constructed in such a manner as to permit it to be firmly fixed in one piece of wood so that a second piece to be marked can be disposed over the first piece and pressed against the marker or markers without interfering with the positioning thereof.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawing:-
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary sectional view through two pieces of wood showing the centering device in use.
Figure 2 represents a plan view of the device.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 represents the piece of wood in which the centering device generally referred to by numeral 6 is secured, while numeral 1 denotes the piece of wood to be marked by the centering device so that it can be determined where dowel openings or the like are to be situated.
This marker consists of a plate 8 substantially circular with the exception of the straight edge portion 9 which in some instances can be used to abut adjacent construction. This plate 8 is provided with the depending sharp prong III which can be easily urged into the member 5 by merely pushing downwardly on the plate, and
also the upstanding bluntly pointed protuberance I I against which the member 1 to be marked can be pushed without the device 6 clinging thereto.
The device is simply placed on the piece of wood 5 and pressed downwardly so that the prong I0 goes into the wood 7. The second piece of wood 7 is placed upon the centering device and pressed downwardly until an impression is made by the blunt protuberance l l. The pieces of wood can then be separated and the device 6 removed, thus leaving marks where the dowel and dowel 10 openings or sockets are to be placed. To facilitate removal of the long prong, the edge of the plate is undercut as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 to enable the insertion of a tool or finger nail under the plate. 15
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the inven- 20 tion as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is A dowel centering device comprising a plate having a relatively long sharp prong projecting 25 from one side thereof and a relative short blunt protuberance projecting from the opposite side of the plate in alignment with the said prong, said plate being of substantially circular shape and having a short straight edge portion inter- 30 rupting the same and said plate further being beveled around its edges to provide an undercut edge at the side of the plate provided with the long prong to facilitate release of the prong.
