This invention relates to improvements in checking means for the picking shaft of looms and it is the general object of the invention to provide checking means for the shaft and parts mounted on it in such manner as to relieve the picker stick of the necessity of absorbing energy stored in the shaft at the end of its picking stroke.
Certain types of picking mechanism utilize a cam secured to the bottom shaft of the loom for engagement with a roll over the cam and mounted on a picking shaft operatively connected to the picker stick. At the time of picking the cam raises the roll to rock the picking shaft for the purpose of giving the stick its picking stroke. Unless some provision is made for checking the motion of the shaft and the roll as well as the connections between the shaft and the stick it is likely that the strain of bringing these parts to rest will all be exerted on and damage the stick.
It is an important object of the present invention to provide a check means to engage some part moving with and supported by the picking shaft which can act to bring the latter to rest independently of the picker stick.
The type of loom to which the checking mechanism has been applied is made with loomsides having an outside web with flanges extending inwardly from the web. It is a further object of the present invention to form certain of the reinforcing flanges in such manner that they define a pocket for the checking element to hold it in position to engage the roll as the latter moves upwardly after leaving the picking cam.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide means for holding the picking element in the pocket in such manner that the element can be moved upwardly to have a snug fit with a flange extending thereover and then be secured in this position by the holding means. By this arrangement the force derived from the roll and transmitted partly through the checking element can be transmitted to a part of the loom frame.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood reference is made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example the embodiments of the invention and in which:

Referring particularly to Fig. l, one of the loomsides used in the loom frame is indicated at 1 and has a web 2 which is at the outer or left hand side as shown in Fig. 1. Extending inwardly from this web are reinforcing flanges 3A The lower part of the loom supports a rocker shaft 4 to which is secured the lower end of the lay swords which support the lay of the loom. The loom is provided with a bottom shaft 15 having secured thereto a cam plate 16 made in two sections 17 and 18 which are secured together by bolts 14. One of these parts, namely 18 as shown in Fig. 2, is keyed at 19 to the bottom shaft 15. A cam 20 formed with an inclined picking surface 21 is secured to the cam plate section 18 by bolts 22 passing through slots 23 in the section concentric with the shaft 15 to permit angular adjustment of the cam 20 with respect to the shaft 15.
Secured to the web 2 are front and back bearings 25 and 26, respectively, which support a picking shaft 27 the front and rear ends of which t into and can turn with respect to the bearings 25 and 26, respectively. An arm 2S is secured to the shaft 27 and a power member 29 secured to the arm 28 at 30 is connected to a strap 31 bolted at 32 to the right hand end of the sweep stick 10 as shown in Fig. l. The parts 28, 29, 31, 10 and 8 may be considered to be operative connections between the shaft 27 and the picker stick 7.
As shown more particularly in Fig. 2, certain of the reinforcing ribs are so disposed that they define a pocket 35. This pocket is defined by a vertical front flange 36, a top ange 37 and a rear flange 38, these flanges joining certain of the previously described llanges 3 and being integral with the web 2. The left hand part of this pocket as viewed in Fig. 3 is defined by the web 2 and the latter is provided with a vertical slot 40 opening into the pocket near the upper end thereof.
The pocket contains a shock absorbing or checking element 45 the sides and top of which are made to fit snugly into the pocket. A holding means such as a bolt 46 extends through the upper part of the element 45 and through the slot 40 and has a head 47 to engage the outer part of the web 2. A nut 48 on the bolt 46 when tightened holds the checking element firmly in position in the pocket against the web. By reason of the slot 40 the bolt 46 can be moved upwardly until the top 50 of the checking element lits tightly against the top flange 37 thereover. The lower part of the element 45 is made with a concave particylindrical recess 51 which opens downwardly and inwardly toward the center of the loom.
The picking shaft is provided with a second arm 55 on which is rotatably mounted a picking roll 56 in position for engagement with the cam 20. This roll is held in position by a nut 57 on the right hand end of arm 55 as viewed in Fig. 3. The roll is aligned with the picking element 45 in such manner that it can be raised to lit into the concave recess 51 and have engagement with the element across a substantial part of its circumferential area. The element 45 may be of a modified compound made of rubber vulcanized to fabric strips incorporated in it, although any other material which is slightly resilient can be used for making of the checking element.
In the operation of the loom the shaft 15 will turn in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 2 so that the surface 21 of cam 20 will periodically engage the roll and force it upwardly from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 toward the position shown in dotted lines in that ligure, thus rocking shaft 27 to give the picker stick a working stroke. The cam will not push the roll 56 positively up against the element 45 and the latter will continue to move upwardly a slight distance due to its momentum and then engage the element 45. The roll will engage the element during the latter part of the working stroke of the picker stick but before the latter engages buffer means usually provided for it but not shown herein. Part of the energy stored in the roll and the: picking shaft will be absorbed by the checking element and the remainder will be transmitted to the loom frame to be absorbed partly by the web 2 and partly by the top flange 37, while the picker stick is still in free motion and the only shock to which the picker stick will be subjected will be that incident to the stopping of itself.
lFrom the foregoing it will be seen that the invention sets forth a simple form of checking means more particularly for the picking shaft of a loom including the checking element 45 which is held in a pocket defined by the web 2 and the reinforcing flanges 36-38. The picking shaft 27 is on the outside of the frame member 1 and the arm 55 extends through the latter member so that the roll 56 is on the inside of the frame member, thus positioning the roll so that its residual motion after it leaves the picking cam can be absorbed by the checking element as already described. Furthermore, the holding means 46 extends through the slot 40 which extends vertically to permit upward adjustment of the checking element 45 so that it can be firmly seated against the top flange 37. The bolt 46 will hold the checking element against the web 2. Also, the checking element has an inclined downwardly and inwardly facing concave recess 51 which conforms to the cylindrical surface 60 of the roll 56 so that the blow by which the roll strikes the element 45 can be distributed over a considerable area of the element 45.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, what is claimed is:
1. In checking means for the picking mechanism of a loom having a picker stick and a frame member formed with a web on the side thereof facing the picker stick, a loom shaft supported by the frame member, a picking cam secured to the shaft on the side of the frame member opposite to the stick, bearings secured to the web on the side thereof facing the picker stick, a picking shaft journaled in said bearings between said web and the picker -o stick and operatively connected to the latter, an arm on the picking shaft extending from the latter through said frame to a point on the side of the frame opposite to the picking shaft, a picking roll rotatable on said arm over the cam and in position to be engaged thereby, reinforcing flanges on the web on the side of the latter opposite the picker stick and forming a pocket above the roll, and a checking element in the pocket in position to engage the roll and check motion thereof and of the picking shaft imparted thereto by the cam.
2. The structure set forth in claim 1 wherein one of the reinforcing flanges extends over and is in engagement with the checking element to resist upward motion of the latter by the roll.
3. The structure set forth in claim l wherein the web has a hole therethrough opening into the pocket and holding means extends through the checking member and hole and holds the checking member against the web.
4. The structure set forth in claim 1 wherein the roll is cylindrical and the checking element has a downwardly facing parti-cylindrical recess to receive the roll to enable the upper cylindrical area of the roll to engage that part of the checking element forming said recess.
5. The structure set forth in claim 1 wherein the web has a vertical slot therein opening into the pocket and holding means extends through the checking element and slot and holds the checking element against the web but permits vertical adjustment of the checking member in the pocket.
6. The structure set forth in claim 4 wherein one of the reinforcing flanges extends over the checking element and the slot enables the holding means to be adjusted upwardly until the top of the checking element engages said one ange.
