SGHOTT. MA OHINE FOR CUTTING SHIRT BOSOMS. No. 271,925.

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
EMILSOHOTT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO L. 85 S.
STERNBERGER, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHI'N E FOR CUTTING. SHIRT-BOSOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,925, dated February 6, 1833,
Application filed November 13, 1882. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL SoHo'rT, a citizen of the free city of Hamburg, Germany, residing in the city and county'of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for. Sloping orQutting Shirt-Bosoms, &c., which improvement isfully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the upper portion thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of opposite sides of a vertical section in line no a, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a top or plan view of the sloping or cutting tool.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of means, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby, by the action of a treadle, motion, whenever desired, may be imparted from acontinuously-rotating shaft to a shaft which operates the tool-holder.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bed of the machine, which is supported on a suitable stand, B.
0 represents a horizontally-arranged rotary shaft, whichis mounted on the bed Aand made hollow or partly hollow, so as to receive at one end a sliding shaft, D, which is formed with a neck, a, for the engagement of a lever, E, whose bearings are on the bed A or stand B, and has its lower end connected with the treadle F of the machine. The end of the shaft 0 opposite to the shaft D carries a crank wheel, G, the wrist-pin b of which engages with a sliding head, H, the latter being fitted in the tool-holder J, whereby, by the rotation of the shaft D, and, consequently, of the crank G, rising and falling and sliding motions are imparted to the head H, the effect of which is to raise and lower the tool-holder.
To the shaft D, at the end opposite to the neck a, is secured a pin, K, which projects right-angularly therefrom through a longitudinally-extending slot, 0, which is formed in the wall of thb hollow end of the shaft 0.
L represents a power or driving wheel, which is fitted loosely on the shaft 0, and has connected to its hub, on the inner side thereof, a
lug, M, which is so disposed that when the shaft D is moved outwardly the connected pin K is brought in contact with said log, it being noticed that the side of the bed adjacent to the driving-wheel L is recessed, as at d, to receive the pin K and lug M and permit rotation thereof with the driving-wheel when so required, the side of the recess being closed by an annular plate, N, which is fitted on the inner end of'the hub of the wheel L, and bolted to the bed, thus serving to guide the wheel and prevent dirt from entering said recess.
The cutter or tool P is shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the object whereof is to form the slope at the top or neck portion of a shirt-bosom, a number of bosoms, when placed on the table Q, and subjected to the action of the cutter or tool, being shaped at one operation, said table being vertically adjustable. When a bosom or a number of bosoms is or are properly placed on the table Q, the treadle F is depressed, the action of the lever E then moving out the shaft D and bringing the pin Kin-contact with the lug M, whereby the continuouslyrotating wheel L imparts motion through the pin K and shaft D to the shaft G, the effect whereof is to depress the tool-holder and cause the tool or cutter to cut the bosom or bosoms on the table. The treadle is let go, and the action of a spring, E, on the leverE, forcesin the shaft D, whereby the pin Kleaves the lug M, and the shafts D G cease rotation, the driving-Wheel L, however, continuing its rotary motion on the shaft 0. As the tool or cutter is in its normal or elevated position, the shaped bosoms are removed and another so pply thereof placed on the table, after which the treadle is depressed, and the other operations named are repeated. When the pin K and lug M are in contact and the shafts G D are rotated, said pin and lug move in a recess, 01, rflich, formed in the bed A, is a continuation of the recess cl, and when they leave said recess d and again reach the recess 01, the pin K is forced from the lug M toward the back ofthe recess d, and, abutting against the wall or shoulder of said recess d, causes the stoppage of the operation of the tool-holder when the same is at its highest position, without, however, affecting the motion of the driving-wheel.
It is evident that the motion of the shaft D may be accomplished by a hand-lever in lieu of the trcadle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cutter or tool holder, in combination with a driving-wheel adapted for continuous rotation, fitted loosely on a shaft, with which it may be coupled or connected by means of a pin, which engages with both said drivingwheel and shaft when said pin is moved, sub stantially asand for the purpose set forth.
.2. A driving-wheel and a shaft on which it is loosely fitted,'in combination with a sliding shaft, a pin and lug, and a cutter or tool holder substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The driving-wheel having a lug, in combination with the bed having recesses 01 d, the shaft 0, the sliding and rotary shaft D, 20 and the pin K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The driving-wheel, the shaftsG D, the pin K, and lug M, in combination with the bed having recesses d d and the annular plate N, 2 5 substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
