Description

Sept. 27, 1955 V E. s. MARGOLIS ELECTRONIC DEFLECTION YOKE Filed Dec. 18, 1953 i l N INVENTOR. [4y 5. MARGOLI: BY I United States Patent ELECTRONIC DEFLECTION YOKE Ely S. Margolis, New Rochelle, N. Y., assignor to Plasticgar Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New Application December 18, 1953, Serial No. 399,021
6 Claims. (Cl. 317200) The present invention is directed to electronic equipment, more particularly to a construction of a deflection yoke constituting a part thereof.
Deflection yokes have been applied to cathode ray tubes for the purpose of providing horizontal and vertical deflecting circuits. Several constructions of such yokes are known, one of which consists of a pair of semi-cylindrical members assembled together whereby a hollow cylindrical shell is formed. The shell has a pair of laterallyextending flanges forming an annular recess therebetween and one of the flanges has a cylindrical extension forming a chamber slightly larger than the principal chamber of the shell. Within the shell are mounted two sets of coils at right angles to each other and separated by a liner made of insulating material. Electrical connections for the two sets of deflection coils were provided by securing an insulating strip onto the cylindrical extension of the shell and connecting wires to the insulating strip. While such a construction had the desired properties, it was relatively inconvenient in the manufacture thereof to produce and assemble the several elements. The strip and its method of mounting lacked the strength necessary for a good design. The spacing of the lugs on the old strip were inconvenient for the connecting of network components. Also, by reason of the presence of the insulating strip in the position described above, the assembly of all of the elements was rendered more difficult.
The present invention is intended and adapted to overcome the difficulties and disadvantages inherent in a device of the character described, it being among the objects of the present invention to provide a deflection yoke ing designated by numerals 9 and 9.
2,719,252 Patented Sept. 27, 1955 ice Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a deflection yoke made in accordance with the present invention and having mounted therein the horizontal and vertical deflection coils;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal crosssectional view thereof, some of the parts being shown in elevation for clearness, said section being taken along line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, being a section taken along line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a transverse cross-sectional view of the assembly taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is a front elevational view of one of the half liners.
With reference to the drawings, the yoke shell consists of the semi-cylindrical electrical insulating members 1 and 1', having a flange 2 and 2 at one end thereof and a flange 3 and 3 at the other end. Semi-cylindrical extensions 4 and 4 are integral with the outer edges of flanges 3 and 3, respectively. A space 5 between the sets of flanges accommodates an iron core which is held in place by band 6, the out-turned ends 7 of which are held together by screw or bolt 8.
Within the shell there are placed a pair of half liners, said liners being of electrical insulating material and be- Within the assembled half liners is a pair of deflection coils 24 and 24', said coils being firmly held therein.
Each half liner consists of a cylindrical portion 12 with a lower flange 13 and a similar upper flange 14. Extending around the periphery of flange 14 is an arcuate support 15 for a terminal insulating strip.
I fastened to the inner face of each support 15 by suitable and particularly a liner combined therewith which is simple in construction and readily assembled.
It is also among the objects of the present invention to provide a yoke liner which consists of a pair of semicylindrical elements and to which an insulating strip or lug for carrying the connecting wires may be readily applied.
In practicing the present invention, there is provided a yoke shell made as in the prior art and consisting of two semi-cylindrical members. The yoke liner of the present invention consists of two semi-cylindrical members, each of which has a laterally-extending flange. The two members or half-liners are assembled so as to form a cylindrical liner or spool which fits within the yoke shell, with a space between the shell and liner suflicient to hold deflection coils.
Extending upwardly from one of the flanges of the half-liner is an arcuate support which preferably is less than semi-circular so that the edges of the half liner extend beyond the edges of the arcuate support. Said support has a recess or notch therein and an insulating strip or lug is secured within the support, said insulating liner having a plurality of terminals for wires to be connected to the several coils.
In the accompanying drawings constituting a part hereof and in which like reference characters indicate like parts,
nected to the respective deflection coils.
means such as rivets 19. Said strip has secured therein a set of four terminals 211, to which are attached lead wires in cable 21. Wires 22 from terminals 20 are con- A U-shaped opening 23 in one half of the shell accommodates cable 21. A pair of deflection coils 10 and 10' is held between the liner and the shell.
Support 15 may be of somewhat different height and still function properly. Notch 16 has two functions, one of which is to clear the shell protrusion and the other is to give access to the vertical coil leads. The notch may be of diflerent size or shape than shown, the corners may be rounded and the notch may be larger and deeper. The lugs or insulating strips are secured directly on support 15 by any suitable means. Only the leads for the vertical coils extend through notch 16. The U-shaped cutout portion on the edge of the shell serves for the passage of the network leads. Both halves of the liner 9 have notch 16 but only one of the half shells need have the U-shaped cutout portion, and said notches are not in alignment with said cutout.
A number of advantages are inherent in the structure of the present invention. The assembly is rigid and strong and can withstand rough handling. The insulating strips or lugs are so spaced as to make it more convenient for attaching network components, thus making for more rapid assembly with less chance of imperfect or incorrect connections. Liner 9 insures a compact structure and more perfect insulation between the sets of coils.
