2 Claims. (Cl. 292-456) This invention relates to window screens.

In a screen structure wherein the screen or wire cloth is secured in a metal frame, the stiles or vertical sides of the frame usually bow inwardly due to the tightness of the screen. It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a clip which is adapted to engage over a side of the screen frame and to be secured to the sash so that the sides of the frame will be held straight and the screen held taut.

Another object of this invention is to provide a clip which is of simple construction which embodies a U-shaped holder for engagement over the side of the screen frame with an apertured tongue or extension adapted to be secured to the sash.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawing and specification and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing and first to Figures 1 and 2, the numeral designates generally a window frame structure such as a casement window or the like.

The window structure 10 has mounted therein, a screen structure 11 which is formed of a screen or wire cloth 12 and a rectangular frame 14. Screen 12 is secured in the frame 14 by means of a securing member 13.

In order to provide a means whereby the stiles 15 of the screen frame 14 may be held straight in a vertical position so as to maintain the screen or wire cloth tight, I have provided a clip generally indicated at 16. The clip 16 is formed of a U-shaped stile engaging member 17 which is adapted to engage over the stile 15 and the projecting portion of the clamping member 13 as shown in Figure 2.

The U-shaped member 17 has extending from the outer leg 18 thereof a tongue 19 which is formed with an elongated opening 20. A screw or fastening member 21 is adapted to engage through opening so as to hold the clip 16 against inward movement. Preferably, the tongue 19 is disposed on an angle with respect to the adjacent face 22 of the frame structure 10 so that tightening of 2,718,423 Patented Sept. 20, 1955 screw 21 will firmly clamp the stile 15 against the frame structure 22.

Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, there is disclosed a modified form of clip structure wherein a U-shaped member 23 is adapted to straddle the stile 24 of the screen frame, and the U-shaped member 23 has extending from the outer leg 25 a tongue 26. The tongue 26 is formed with an elongated opening 27 and an obtusely inclined projection 28 extends from the outer end of tongue 27.

A clamping member 29 formed of an outer wall 30, and a pair of inwardly convergent walls 31 are adapted to engage between the projection 28 and outer leg 25. The wall 30 is formed with opening 32 through which a screw or fastening member 33 engages. The tongue 26 is of such length that when screw 33 is threaded into the frame 10 the outer wall or side of clamping member 29 will bear against the inner side of projection 28 so as to produce a wedging or pulling action on the clip and thereby pulling stile 24 outwardly.

In the use and operation of this clip structure, referring first to Figure l, and Figure 2, an opening 34 is formed in the window frame 10 through which the securing member 21 is adapted to engage.

The stile 15 is pulled outwardly or to the left, as viewed in Figure 1, by hand and held in its outward position until screw 21 is tightened with respect to the frame 10. The structure shown in Figures 3 and 4 is applied in somewhat the same manner as clip 16, with the exception that the clamping member 29 will effect outward pulling on the stile 24 as screw 33 is threaded into the frame 10.

With a clip structure as hereinbefore described, the screen frame, which is frequently formed of aluminum, will be held against inward bending with respect to the stiles thereof, so that the screen or wire cloth will be held tight and will not become slack due to inward bending of the stiles of the screen frame.

What is claimed is:

1. A clip for use in holding a stile of a screen frame against inward bending, comprising a U-shaped member adapted to engage over the front and opposite vertical edges of the stile, a tongue extending angularly from one leg of said member, said tongue having an elongated opening, an obtusely inclined projection carried by said tongue, a substantially U-shaped tightening member having the legs thereof converging from the bight thereof, the bight of said tightening member having an opening, and a fastening member extending through the first and second named openings and into the window frame.

2. A clip for use in holding a stile of a screen frame against inward bending, comprising a U-shaped member adapted to engage over the front and opposite vertical edges of the stile, a tongue extending angularly from one leg of said member, said tongue having an elongated opening formed therein, an obtusely inclined projection carried by said tongue, a wedge-shaped tightening member having a side thereof slidably engaged with said projection and having an opening extending therethrough, and a fastening member extending through the first and second named openings and into the window frame.
