Claims. Cl. 132-45) This invention relates. to improvement in support for hair cutting clippers.
The principal objects of the invention are:
First, to provide a novel support for slidably guiding hair clippers along a predetermined plane.
Second, to provide a movable support With an attached socket to securely and releasably retain hair clippers for guided motion of theclippers. Third, to provide a support for hair clippers including guide rails for longitudinal back and forth motion of the clippers and a pivotal support for lateral swinging motion of the guide rails so that the clippers may be moved over an area defined by a true plane.
Fourth, to provide a support having the foregoing properties which is simple and inexpensive and easy to adjust.
.Othefobjects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claims. The drawings illustrate a highly practical form of the invention.

A style of hair cut currently popular with young men is known as the fiat top hair cut and requires that the hair on the top of the head be clipped or cut in a flat plane. This results in the hair at the top of the head being shorter than hair on the sides of the head and thebarber cannot use the persons head as a guide for determining the length of the hair over different portions of the head. Many barbers find it diflicult to control the movement of their clippers in a true plane and as a result the cost of a fiat top hair cut is more than the cost of an ordinary hair cut in many shops. The present invention provides a support for hair clippers which relieves the barber of the task of keeping the clippers in a true plane while moving them over the customers head.
The support consists of a hanger 1 having a depending angled rod 2 secured to the bottom of a socket element i s connected to the lower ends of the side flanges 6 in spaced relationship to the bottom 7 of the socket so as to engage the front of the body of the clippers just above the blades 8. The socket member 3 and the band 9 thereon removably support clippers in a stable position so that the clippers are freely movable with the hanger 1 2,718,231 Patented Sept. 20, 1955 but are readily removable from the hangerfor ordinary use. The depending hanger rod 2 is bent horizontally as. at 10 and secured to two horizontal cross shafts 11" having roller bearings 12 mounted on each end thereof. The roller bearings 12 are rollingly supported between channel shapediupper rails 13 and lower rails 14 formed on the top and bottom of side members 15. The roller bear ings constitute roll or slide elements guidedly supported between side members 15 i The side members 15 are interconnected in parallel spaced relationship by upper cross straps 16 and a lower cross strap unnumbered at the inner ends of thefside members. The outer ends of the side members are fur} ther interconnected by a removable end cap 18 having a top flange 19 and side flanges 20 lapped along the top and sides of the side members. The end cap 18 is retained in place by screws 21 and has an end wall 22 bridging the ends of the side members and the spacetherebetween. The end wall 22 has a vertical slot 23 formed therein and open at the bottom to permit the hanger rod 2 to pass through and project from the side members as the roller bearings roll along the rails 13 and 14. The end cap 18 constitutes a retaining stop for preventing the roller bearings from rolling out. of the outer ends of the side members and desirably cushioning rubber blocks 24 (see Fig. 1) arepositioned in the outer ends of. the upper rails 13 to cushion the engagement between the roller bearings and the end cap 18. i The inner ends of the side members 15 are supported by the forked arms 25 of a generally U-shaped'bracket connected to the top of a first support rod 26. The arms 25 are welded or permanently secured as at 27 within the inner ends of the upper rails 13 and desirably inner cushioning bumpers 28 are positioned against the endsbf the arms so that the arms prevent the roller bearings from moving out of the inner ends of the side members. i The first support rod 26 is permanently and fixedly secured in the ear 29 on a relatively adjustable swivelclamp member 30. The clamp member 30 is lapped upon and cooperates with a radially serrated clamp member 31. A clamp screw for securing the members 30 and 3 1. in adjusted position is indicated at 32. The clamp member 31 is'secured to the top of a vertical swivel rod 33.
The swivel rod 33 is freely rotatably received in the upper end of a vertically adjustable support tube 358 which extends telescopically and slidably into the upper end of a hollow column 35. The column is provided with a suitable mounting bracket or pedestal 3 and is vertically slotted and threaded at its upper end as at 37. A wedge shaped clamping sleeve 33 is threaded on the outer end of the column to adjustably clamp the rod 34 in the column. The column 35 and pedestal 36 .may be adapted to stand on the floor along side of a barber chair or the column 35 and clamp sleeve 38 may be built into the back of a barber chair. i
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the barber can adjust the column 34 and horizontal swivel connection 3032 until the side members 15 are in any desired plane over the customers head. The hanger 1 and the clippers 5 carried thereby may then be freely reciprocated over the customers head to cut the hair in a true flat top plane without requiring expert effort and attention on the part of the'barber. Variations in the details of the construction of the several elements described which fall within the scope of the following claims may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed to be new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. Apparatus for movably supporting and guiding power driven hair clippers comprising a support, an upright column vertically adjustably carried by said sup port, a vertical pivot carried by the upper end of said column, a horizontal adjustable pivot clamp' carried on the upper end of said pivot, a bracket adjustably carried by said clamp and having spaced arms projecting laterally therefrom, transversely spaced parallel side members having opposed channel shaped rails at their upper and lower edges secured to said bracket by having said arms secured within the inner ends of the upper rails, spaced cross shafts extending transversely between said side members and having roller bearings on their ends rollingly received in said rails, a hanger secured to said cross shafts and projecting forwardly and downwardly from said side members, an end cap removably secured over the outer ends of said side members and having a slot therein adapted to pass said hanger, cushioning bumpers positioned within the ends of said side members to retain said roller bearings therein, a depending angled support rod on said hanger, an inclined socket plate secured to the bottom of said support rod and conformed and shaped to engage the bottom and back of a set of hair clippers, and a retaining band on said socket plate spaced above the bottom of the socket plate to engage the nose of the body of the clippers above the teeth of the clippers with the teeth projecting from the socket plate and band.
2. Apparatus for movably supporting and guiding power driven hairclippers comprising a support, an upright column vertically adjustably carried by said support, a vertical pivot carried by the upper end of said column, a horizontal adjustable pivot clamp carried on the upper end of said pivot, a bracket adjustably carried by said clamp and having spaced arms projecting laterally therefrom, transversely spaced parallel side members having opposed channel shaped rails at their upper and lower edges secured to said bracket, a carriage rollingly received in said rails, a hanger secured to said carriage and projecting forwardly and downwardly from said side members, an end cap removably secured over the outer ends of said side members and having a slot therein adapted to pass said hanger, cushioning bumpers positioned within the ends of said side members to retain said roller bearings therein, a depending angled support rod on said hanger, an inclined socket plate secured to the bottom of said support rod and conformed and shaped to engage the bottom and back of a set of hair clippers, and a retaining band on said socket plate spaced above the bottom of the socket plate to engage the nose of the body of the clippers above the teeth of the clippers with the teeth projecting from the socket plate and band.
3. Apparatus for movably supporting and guiding power driven hair clippers comprising a support, a vertical pivot carried by said support, a bracket secured to said pivot and having spaced arms projecting laterally therefrom, transversely spaced parallel side members having opposed channel shaped rails at their upper and lower edges secured to said bracket by having said arms welded within the inner ends of the upper rails, a carriage reciprocably mounted between said side members and having rollers rollingly received in said rails, a
hanger secured to said carriage and projecting downwardly below said side members, an end cap removably secured over the outer ends of said side members and having a slot therein adapted to pass said hanger, cushioning bumpers positioned within the ends of said side members to retain'said carriage therein, a depending angled support rod on said hanger, an inclined socket plate secured to the bottom of support rod and conformed and shaped to engage the bottom and back of a set of hair clippers, and a retaining band on said socket plate spaced above the bottom of the socket plate to engage the nose of the body of the clippers above the teeth of the clippers with the teeth projecting from the socket plate and band.
4. Apparatus for movably supporting and guiding power driven hair clippers comprising a support, a vertical pivot carried by said support, a bracket secured to said pivot and projecting laterally therefrom, transversely spaced parallel side members having opposed rails at their upper and lower edges secured to said bracket, a carriage reciprocably mounted between said side members, a hanger secured to said carriage and projecting downwardly below said side members, an end cap removably secured over the outer ends of said side members and having a slot therein adapted to pass said hanger, a depending angled support rod on said hanger, an inclined socket plate secured to the bottom of said support rod and conformed and shaped to engage the bottom and back of a set of hair clippers, and a retaining band on said socket plate spaced above the bottom of the socket plate to engage the nose of the body of the clippers above the teeth of the clippers with the teeth projecting from the socket plate and band.
5. Apparatus for movably supporting and guiding power driven hair clippers comprising a support, a vertical pivot carried by said support, a bracket securedto said pivot and projecting laterally therefrom, transversely spaced parallel side members forming a guide rail secured to said bracket, a carriage reciprocably mounted on said rail, a hanger secured to said carriage and projecting downwardly from said rail, an end cap removably secured over the outer ends of said side members and having a slot therein adapted to pass said hanger, cushioning bumpers positioned within the ends of said side members to retain said carriage thereon, a depending angled support rod on said hanger, an inclined socket plate secured to the bottom of said support rod and conformed and shaped to engage the bottom and back of a set of hair clippers, and a retaining band on said socket plate spaced above the bottom of the socket plate to engage the nose of the body of the clippers above the teeth of clippers with the teeth projecting from the socket plate and band' 6. Apparatus for movably supporting and guiding power driven hair clippers comprising a support, a vertical pivot carried by said support, a bracket secured to said pivot'and projecting laterally therefrom, transversely spaced parallel side members forming a guide rail secured to said bracket, a carriage reciprocablymounted on said rail, a hanger secured to said carriage and projecting downwardly from said rail, means positioned at the ends of said rail to retain said carriage thereon, a

7. A support for guidingly supporting a set of hair clippers comprising, a socket member shaped to receive and support the bottom and back of the clippers,- a band on the lower end of said socket member and cooperating with the bottom thereof to define a laterally opening slot for removably receiving and exposing the teeth of the clippers, a slide element connected to the top of said socket member, a guide rail slidably supporting said slide element, and means for horizontally rotatably and vertically adjustably and tiltingly supporting said guide rail over a barber chair.
8. A support for guidingly supporting a set of hair clippers comprising, a socket member shaped to receive and support the bottom and back of the clippers, a band on the lower end of said socket member and cooperating with the bottom thereof to define a laterally opening slot for removably receiving and exposing the teeth of the clippers, a slide element connected to the top of said socket member, a guide rail slidably supporting said slide element, and means for horizontally rotatably and vertically adjustably supporting said guide rail over a barber chair.
9. A support for guidingly supporting a set of hair clippers comprising, a socket member shaped to removably receive and support the clippers in generally upright position with the teeth thereof directed downwardly and laterally, the lower end of said socket member defining a laterally opening slot for removably receiving and exposing the teeth of the clippers, a slide element connected to said socket member, a guide rail slidably supporting said slide element, and means for horizontally rotatably supporting said guide rail over a barber chair.
10. A support for guidingly supporting a set of hair clippers comprising, a socket member shaped to receive and support the clippers in generally upright position with the teeth of the clippers downward, said socket member defining a laterally opening slot for removably receiving and exposing the teeth of the clippers, and means for horizontally rotatably and horizontally slidably supporting said socket member over a barber chair.
