Description

APPARATUS FOR COOLING LUMPY MATERIAL Filed July 16, 1953 [nvemors fielmuz Wende born Wilhelm Zimmerman/2 United States Patent APPARATUS FOR COOLING LUNIPY lVlATERIAL Helmut Wendeborn, Bad Hamburg, and Wilhelm Zimmermann, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, assignors to Metallgesellschaft Aktiengesellschaft, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, a corporation of Germany Application July 16, 1953, Serial No. 368,260
Claims priority, application Germany August 5, 1952 4 Claims. (Cl. 34238) This invention relates to apparatus for cooling lumpy material. In particular, the invention is directed to the construction of the floor of a material carrying trough for a cooling conveyor.
In the Zimmermann and Wendeborn co-pending application Serial No. 281,244, filed April 8, 1952, for Cooling of Hot Material, an apparatus was shown in which the floor of the conveyor is composed of louvered plates through which air, or other cooling gases, is passed up into the material to be cooled. In the copending Zimmermann application Serial No. 337,100, filed February 16, 1953, for Cooling Apparatus, now Patent 2,669,032, an arrangement was disclosed in which the louvered member comprised an inclined wall for a circular apparatus.
The objects of the instant invention are to improve upon the aforementioned structures in order to make the trough floor stronger and more accessible for purposes of maintenance and repair.
In general, these objects are obtained by forming the bottom of the conveyor trough with a flange extending inwardly from the side walls, which flange supports a wire sieve or screen surmounted by a plate having openings therein, formed by a plurality of individual metal strips arranged in the form of inclined spaced overlapping slats, each slat having horizontal end portions. Means are provided for removably fastening the sieve screen and plate to the flanges, so that they can be easily removed and replaced. A relatively heavy grid is provided beneath the plate in order to give it additional support, and to reinforce the trough bottom. When the trough is very wide, as for example 1.5 In. or more, at least one additional supporting beam is added to the floor.
The means by which the objects of the invention are obtained are described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic cross-sectional view through a conveyor, and
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic cross-sectional view substantially at right angles to the lower portion of the view of Figure l.
The trough-like conveyor 1 has side walls 2, and is surmounted by a gas draft hood 3, all as substantially shown in the aforesaid application Serial No. 281,244. However, the floors of the previous structures are replaced by the floors hereinafter described.
The lower edge of the side walls 2 are supplied with inwardly turned flanges 6, upon which rests a sieve screen 4 surmounted by the plate 5. This plate is composed of a plurality of individual strips of metal which are bent so as to form upwardly inclined spaced parallel slats, a louvered floor being thus formed. Each metal strip 7 has horizontal end portions adapted to rest on supporting flanges 6 projecting from the side walls of the trough. Metal strips 7 are removably fastened to flanges 6 by screws or bolts 7a to hold sieve screen 4 and plate 5 in position. Beneath sieve screen 4 is a heavy grid of supporting and reinforcing bars 8, these bars being welded or otherwise secured to the lower edge of the side walls 2. Bars 8 help to keep sieve screen 4 from warping under heat.
If the trough is very wide, for example 1.5 m. or more, an inverted T-shaped beam 9 is placed across the center of the floor sections.
Having now described the means by which the objects of the invention are obtained, we claim:
1. In an apparatus composed of a plurality of movable troughs for cooling lumpy material resting thereon, said troughs each having side walls and a bottom floor, said floor comprising a sieve screen, a plurality of inclined overlapping spaced parallel slats above said screen, each slat having horizontal end portions, and means for removably securing said sieve and said slat end portions to said trough.
2. In an apparatus as in claim 1, said floor further comprising a grid secured to said trough and extending beneath and supporting said sieve screen.
3. In an apparatus as in claim 2, said means for removably securing said sieve and slats further comprising flanges projecting inwardly from said side walls and supporting said sieve screen and slats, metal strips on said slat end portions, and removable securing means for fastening said strips, slats and sieve screen to said flanges.
4. In an apparatus as in claim 3, said floor further comprising a supporting beam extending across said trough, and flanges on said beam for supporting said sieve screen and slats.
