Description
Aug. 30, 1955 P. BRAUNSTEIN GARMENT HANGER Filed Dec. 5, 1952 ATTORNEYS United States Patent GARMENT HANGER Paul Braunstein, New York, N. Y.
Application December 5, 1952, Serial No. 324,292
1 Claim. (Cl. 223-94) This invention relates to garment hangers and, in particular, to a garment hanger which can be collapsed.
An object of this invention is to provide a garment hanger which may be readily inserted and withdrawn from the neck of a garment without opening the garment.
Another object of this invention is to provide a garment hanger which may be easily extended for use with a garment as well as easily collapsed for storage or for packing into a traveling bag.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a garment hanger constructed in accordance to the present invention, the solid lines indicating the arms of the hanger in the extended position, and the dotted lines showing the arms in a collapsed position.
Figure 2 is a bottom view of the garment hanger shown in Figure 1, in solid line.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary cross sectional view taken along line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken along line 44 of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference numerals are used throughout, the numeral indicates generally a garment hanger constructed according to the present invention. The hanger 10 comprises an upstanding center support 11 having a pair of vertically disposed ribs 12 and 13 projecting from opposite edges thereof. A pair of arms 14 and 15 are arranged in end to end spaced relation, Figure 2, and each has its facing end, 16 and 17 respectively, bifurcated and embracingly receiving the ribs 12 and 13, as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 4. The arms 14 and 15 are pivotally connected to the ribs 12 and 13 by pins 18 and 19 respectively for movement about axes extending transversely of the ribs.
As shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4, the arms 14 and 15 are provided with wells 21 and 22 which extend longitudinally inwardly from the portion between the legs of the bifurcation of each arm. Detents 23 and 24 are seated within the wells 21 and 22 and are biased by coil springs 25 and 26 for movement into engagement Z ,7 16,5 14 Patented Aug. 30, 1 955 with notches 27 and 28 formed in the edges of the corresponding ribs 12 and 13 when the arms are in the end to end spaced relation position, as in Figure 3 and Figure 4. The detents 23 and 24 and notches 27 and 28 together embody interengaging means for holding the arms 14 and 15 in the above described end to end position of Figure 3 and Figure 4. A hook 29 is carried by the center support 11 and projects from the upper end thereof for engagement with a supporting rod or surface. As shown in'Figure 3 in dotted and solid lines, the lower portion of the facing ends 16 and 17 of the arms as well as the lower portion .of the ribs 12 and 13 are cut away to facilitate the pivotal movement of the arms 14 and 15 relative to the ribs.
To collapse the garment hanger 10, the arms 14 and 15 are grasped and urged toward each other, pivoting about the axes provided by the pins 18 and 19. As the arms move together, the spring biased detents 23 and 24 ride over the bounding edges of the corresponding notches 27 and 28, respectively, and permit the arms to be moved to a collapsed side by side position, shown by the dotted lines of Figure 1. In order to lock the arms in the end to end spaced relation position, the arms are urged apart until the detents, which abut the peripheral edges of the ribs 12 and 13, are forced into the corresponding notches 27 and 28 by the springs 25 and 26.
What is claimed is:
A garment hanger comprising an upstanding support, a pair of vertically disposed ribs projecting from opposite sides of said support, a pair of arms arranged in end to end spaced relation and having the facing ends bifurcated, each of the bifurcated ends of said arms embracingly receiving the corresponding one of said ribs and pivotally connected thereto for movement of said arms from the end to end spaced relation position to a collapsed side by side position, a hook projecting from the upper end of said support for engagement with a supporting rod, and interengaging means on the facing ends of said arms and on said support for holding said arms in the end to end spaced relation position, said means including a spring biased detent carried by the portion between the legs of the bifurcation of each of said arms and engageable with a notch formed in the edge of the corresponding one of said ribs when the arms are in the end to end spaced relation position for holding said arms in the latter position.
