Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES POPE. OF SYRAGUSE, NEV YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,153, dated February 14, lSCU.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GnAnLEs IorE, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for the Manufacture of Sz lt; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing arches in which kettles are set for boiling brine in the manufacture ot' salt that a current ot' heated air be conducted from the sides and surroundings of the arch to the margin o't the kettles and discharged over thebrine, the same being eii'ected by first placing hollow angle-pieces bet-ween the kettles, second, by making the arms of the kettles hollow; third, by making an air-passage on each side of the arch communicating with the hollow anglepieces and the hollow arms ot` the kettles.
In the drawings, Figure I represents a salt block 7 having a line of kettles set in an arch, the tire-place Ain front and the chimney B in rear. Fig. 2 represents the walls of the arch before the kettles are set, the center space, C, being :l'er the fire and the kettles, and the side spaces, D D, being air-passages. Fig. 3 shows an edge view of one of the angle-pieces; Fig. 4, a perspective View of the same; Fig. 5, a view otl one of the kettles having hollow arms.
To make and use my invention, construct the arch of stone or brick, the two walls E Il Vforming the fire-tlue O, connecting with the chimney in the rear and supporting a tier of kettles, usually in boiling brine at these salines numbering fifteen to twenty. Outside of the arch, and upon either side, erect an additional wall, F F, forming au air-chamber, D D. At the front of the air-chambers make an opening, G G, through which the chambers D D may receive a supply of air. Cast the kettles II in the usual manner and form, making the arms I hollow.
In order to till the spaces over the arch and betweenthe kettles, construct the angle-pieces .I of cast or wrought iron or of brick material, and hollow, as shown at K. Place these pieces upon the larch in such a manner that the opening K shall communicate with the air-space D at the side of the arch, and the point L project between the kettles midway where it meets the corresponding point of the one on the opposite side of the arch. In setting the anglepieces between the kettles, place the opening O in each above the margin of the kettles, as shown at P. In scttin the k ettlcs in the arch, let them rest by the arms upon the side walls in the usual manner, having the hollow of the arms communicating with the air-spaces D.
The operation is as follows: `On the arch becoming heated, the air in the side spaces, D D, is warmed by the waste heat cond ucted through the walls ofthe arch, and, rising, passes upward through the hollow angle-pieces and the hollow arms ofthe kettles, and is discharged over the brine in t-hc kettles, thereby assisting evaporation by absorbing the steam and carrying it rapidly away from the kettles,
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Thehollow angle-pieces, constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. Making the arms of the kettles hollow, as set forth, and for the purpose stated.
3. Combining the hollow angle-pieces with the air-spaces D upon the sides ofthe arch, when so arranged that heated air may passl 'from the spaces upward through the anglepieces and be discharged over the boiling liquid in the kettles, as setforth.
