6 Claims. (Cl. 30-293) This invention relates to edge trimmers and the like.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved trirmning device which may be used to trim the edge of a sheet or strip of material such as a sheet of linoleum.
Another object is to provide such a device which may be easily and cheaply made from simple parts and standard shapes.
To accomplish these objects, I construct my trimmer in a form similar to that of a carpenters plane but with suitable guides added to form a slot or channel through which the sheet or strip to be trimmed is passed.
It will be understood that although my trimmer is particularly designed for trimming linoleum its use is not confined to that purpose, and that it may be used for trimming sheets or strips of various materials.
For a more complete understanding of my invention, reference may be had to the description and drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a preferred form of my invention, illustrating its use in trimming the edge of a sheet of material;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same, partly broken away and in section;
Figure 3 is a front elevation;
Figure 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken along line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Throughout the description and figures of the drawing like reference numerals refer to similar parts.
Referring to the drawing, one embodiment of my invention is shown, designated generally as edge trimmer 10, comprising a base member 2d, a plane iron clamp 40, a guide member 50, and a plane iron 70 secured together as shown and as described below. The several parts may be made of any suitable materials; for example, plane iron 70 may be of steel and the remaining parts of steel or aluminum.
Base member 29 is elongated, and is of relatively thinwebbed T-shaped cross section as best seen in Figure 3. Base member 28 has an elongated main plate 21 having an upper face 22 and a lower face 23. Depending from one edge of main plate 21 is an elongated lower plate 24 having a base member inner face 25. Extending above main plate 21 from the same edge is an elongated upper plate 26. intermediate the ends of main plate 21 and adjacent lower plate 24 is an opening or throat 27. Extending into base member inner face 25 of lower plate 24 and adjacent to throat 27 is a plane iron recess 28. A plurality of holes 29 is provided through main plate 21 through which extend bolts 30.
Plane iron clamp 40 may be of generally rectangular block-like configuration as shown in the drawings, and has a suitable plane iron slot 41 and clamping screw 42 by means of which plane iron 70 may be secured in adjusted position as will be described below. Plane iron clamp 40 is secured to upper face 22 of main plate 21 by any suitable means, as by machine screws 43. If desired, it may also be secured to upper plate 26, as by a machine screw 44. Any other suitable means may be used for securing plane iron clamp 40 to base member 20. As will be noted from the drawing, plane iron clamp 40 is secured to main plate 21 adjacent throat 27, with plane iron slot 41 aligned with throat 27 and with recess 28.
Guide member 50 is an elongated member of relatively thin-webbed L-shaped cross-section as best seen in Figure 3, and has an elongated upper web 51 secured to the lower face 23 of main plate 21 by means which will be described below. Depending from the elongated edge of upper web 51 which is nearer lower plate 24 is an elongated lower web 52 which has a guide member inner face 53 adjacent to base member inner face 25, and spaced from and parallel thereto. Thus there is formed an elongated slot or channel 54 below lower face 23 of main plate 21 and between the spaced base member inner face 25 and guide member inner face 53. As illustrated in Figure 3, channel 54 is adapted to receive the edge of a strip or sheet 55 of linoleum or the like for trimming the edge thereof. A plane iron recess 56 is formed in guide member 5%) adjacent to throat 27 and aligned with plane iron slot 41, this recess 56 extending into both guide member inner face 53 and the upper face of upper web 51.
A plurality of transverse slots 57 is formed in upper web 51 through which bolts 30 extend. Bolts 3% and nuts 31 may be used to clamp guide member 50 in any selected transverse position with respect to base member 20, that is to the right or left as viewed in Figures 3 and 4, so as to adjust the width of channel 54 for the thickness of the sheet 55 to be trimmed. It will be understood that any other suitable means of clamping guide member 50 in adjusted transverse position with respect to base member 20 may be used. For example, transverse slots may be formed in main plate 21 instead of, or in addition to, slots 57 in upper web 51. It will also be understood that sufficient adjustment is provided to accommodate the various thicknesses of sheets for which edge trimmer 1% may be designed.
Plane iron is elongated, has a transverse cutting edge 71 at its lower end, and is held in position in plane iron slot 41 by clamping screw 42 with its lower portion projecting downwardly through throat 27 and with cutting edge 71 extending into channel 54 an adjusted distance below lower face 23, this distance determining the amount of edge to be trimmed with each stroke of edge trimmer 10. The width of cutting edge 71 is preferably greater than the width of channel 54 when the latter is at its maximum adjustable width, and plane iron 70 is so placed transversely that cutting edge 71 bridges and overlaps channel 54 with one side extending into plane iron recess 28 and the other side into plane iron recess 56, as shown in Figure 4.
Although, as indicated in the drawing, I prefer to construct my edge trimmer with lower plate 24 and lower web 52 at right angles respectively to main plate 21 and upper web 51, so that, with cutting edge 71 perpendicular to said lower plate and said lower web, the edge of sheet 55 will be trimmed perpendicularly to its faces, edge trimmers in accordance with my invention may be constructed for trimming bevelled edges by constructing them with lower plate 24 and lower web 52 parallel to each other but at an angle to main plate 21 and upper Web 51, leaving cutting edge 71 parallel to lower face 23 of main plate 21.
Various other embodiments and modifications of my invention are possible within the scope of the appended claims. For example, my edge trimmer may be made without adjustment for the width of channel 54. The width of cutting edge 71 in this case need not be greater than that of channel 54 in which case cutting edge 71 will bridge but not overlap channel 54. As another example, upper plate 26, which serves as a sort of handle, maybe omitted, or a handle of any desired configuration may be substituted for upperplate 26.
The operation of my edge trimmer will-be apparent from the foregoing description, the device simply being adjusted for sheet thickness and depth of cut, placed over the edge of the sheet, and operated like a carpenters plane.
'I claim as my invention:
1. An edge trimmer for thin sheet material such as linoleum comprising in combination a base member having an elongated relatively thin main plate and an elongated relatively thin lower plate depending from an elongated edge of said main plate and extending downwardly therefrom and lengthwise therewith, said main plate having a throat therethrough adjacent said lowerplate; a plane iron clamp secured to the upper face of said main plate adjacent said throat; a guide member secured to the lower face of said main plate having an elongated relatively tthin upper web and an elongated relatively thin lower web depending from the elongated side ofsaid upper web proximal and parallel to said lower plate whereby a narrow channel is formed between said lower plate and said lower web to guide the sheet to be trimmed; and a plane iron secured to said plane'iron clamp and extending downwardly through said throat with its lower end extending into said channel, said plane iron having aatrarnsverse cutting edge at its lower endgwhereby the channel between said lower plate and said lower web below said main. plate guides and supports the edge of a sheet of linoleum or the like to be trimmed by said transverse cutting edge.
2. An edge trimmer in accordance with claim 1 wherein means is provided in said plane iron clamp for adjustably securing said transversecutting edge a selected distance below the lower surface of said main plate.
3. An edge trimmer in accordance with claim 1 wherein the width of said transverse cutting edge is greater than the distance between said lower plate and said lower web, space being provided for each end of said transverse cutting edge by recesses adjacent said throat in said lower plate and in said guide member respectively.

An edge trimmer in accordance with claim 3 wherein means is provided .for adjustably securing said guide member to said main plate for adjustment-of the distance between said lower plate and said lower web, the width of said transverse cutting edge being greater than the distance between said lower plate and said lower web when said guide member is at its maximumoutward adjustable distance from said lower plate.
5. An edge trimmer for thin sheet material such as linoleum comprising, in combinatioman elongated relatively thin main plate having an elongated relatively thin lower plate-depending from an elongated edge thereof and extending lengthwise therewith, said main plate having a throat extending therethrough adjacent said lower -depend ing plate, 'said lower depending plate having a recess formed therein adjacent said throat and extending :downwardly into said'lower depending plate below a'plan'e containing a lower face of said main plate, said threat in the main plate and the recess'in said lower depending plate being adapted to receive the cutting edge of 'a plane iron;
4 a plane iron clamp secured to an upper surface of said main plate adjacent said throat and having adjustable clamping means thereon for securing a plane iron in an adjustable position thereon; a guide member adjustably secured to the lower face of said main plate and having an elongated relatively thin upper web and an elongated relatively thin lower web depending from the elongated side of said upper web proximal to said lower depending plate, said upper web of the guide member having a recess extending downwardly from its upper face and adjacent said throat'and'in transverse alignment with said throat in the main plate and the recess in said lower depending plate whereby the throat and recesses are adapted to receive the lower cutting edge of a plane iron; means for securing the upper web of the guide member to the main plate for adjustably positioning the lower depending web from a position adjacent the lower depending plate to a position remote therefrom whereby a channel way is formed and defined by the opposed surfaces of said lower depending plate and said lower depending web and the adjacent lower face of said main plate, said means for securing the upper web of the guide member to said main plate including stop means for limiting said remote positioning of the lower web firom the depending plate whereby the lower cutting edge of a plane iron will in all adjusted positions of the guide member be adapted to extend into said recess in the lower depending plate and the recess in the upper web of said guide member; and an elongated plane iron secured to said plane iron clamp by said adjustable clamping means on said plane iron clamp, said plane iron having a cutting edge at its lower end extending transverse to the length of the plane iron, said plane iron extending down through said throat in the main plate and into said recesses in the lower depending plate and said upper web of the guide member, whereby the cutting edge thereof is adjustably positioned below the plane containing the lower surface of the main plate, and the edge of a piece of sheet material such as linoleum received within said channel may be accurately held in position and trimmed.
6. An edge trimmer in accordance with claim 5 wherein said means for securing the upper web of the guide member to the main plate for adjustably positioning the lower depending web from a position adjacent the lower depending plate to a position remote therefrom comprises a plurality of spaced transverse slots through at least one of said upper web and said main plate, and a plurality of fasteners each passing through said upper web, said main plate and at least one of said transverse slots, whereby said upper web may be secured to said main plate in adjusted position.
