United States Patent O 2,715,253 DETACHABLE BUTTON Katie Velma Martin, Hopkinsville, Ky. Application December 11, 1953, Serial No. 397,669 1 Claim. (Cl. 24-108) invention relates to new and useful irnprovements in buttons for use particularly on wearing apparel and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of this character comprising a novel construction and arrangement whereby the button may be expeditiously removed from the garment when desired.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a detachable or removable button of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, durable, compact, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost,

All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:

Figure l is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention, showing the members separated;

Figure 2 is a view in vertical section, showing the separable members connected together;

Figure 3 is a perspective view substantially similar to Figure 1 but showing another form of the invention; and

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through the modiiication, showing the members together.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, and to Figures l and 2 thereof in particular, it will be seen that reference characters 5 and 6 generally designate, respectively, separable male and female members in the form of a snap fastener.

The female member 6 is permanently mounted on the material, as at 7. Toward this end, the female member 6 includes a pair of complemental peripherally anged front and

rear disks

8 and 9, respectively, which are permanently joined by a tubular connector integral with said disk 8, with the material 7 therebetween. The tubular connector 10 includes a substantially bulbous intermediate portion formed to provide a socket 11 comprising a neck having openings or slots therein accommodating the end portions of a retaining spring 12 the purpose of which will be presently set forth.

The male member 5 comprises a disk 13 from which a headed stud 14 projects. The stud 14 is adapted to be snapped into the socket 11 and frictionally retained by the spring 12 for detachably connecting the members 5 and 6. Fixed in any suitable manner on the disk 13 is an ornamental head 15 of suitable material.

It is thought that the operation or use of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. With the stud 14 engaged in the socket 11, the member 5 functions as a button in an obvious manner. When, for any reason, it is desired to remove or detach the member 5, this may be expeditiously accomplished by withdrawing the stud 14 from the socket 11 against the tension of the retaining spring 12.

In the embodiment of Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings, reference characters 16 and 17 generally designate, respectively, male and female members. The female member 17 includes a slotted or skeletonized disk 18 of suitable material and comprising a peripheral ange, said disk being stitched at 19 to the material 20. The disk 18 further includes a centrally located socket 21 having diametrically opposite slots or openings therein accommodating the end portions of a retaining spring 22.

The male member 16 comprises a disk 23 from which a centrally located headed stud 24 projects. The stud 24 is engageable in the socket 21 of the female member 17. Adhesively or otherwise suitably fixed on the disk 23 is an ornamental head 25 of suitable material.

In use, the member 16 is insertable through a buttonhole in the usual manner. To remove the member 16 for any purpose, it is only necessary to disengage the stud 24 from the socket 21 against the tension of the retaining sprin g 22.

It is believed that the many advantages of a detachable button constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although preferred embodiments are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope ol. the invention as claimed.

What is claimed is:

A button of the character described comprising: a female member for mounting on a garment, said female member including a disk on one side of the garment and comprising an integral, centrally located tubular connector projecting therethrough and including a substantially bulbous intermediate portion providing a socket and an inner end portion providing a neck having diametrically opposite slots therein immediately adjacent the disk, an apertured disk on the other side of the garment xed on the free end portion of the connector, said disks comprising inturned peripheral flanges gripping the garment therebetween, a spring in the first-named disk engaged in the slots, and a male member removably mounted on the female member, said male member comprising a disk and a headed stud thereon insertable in the socket through the neck for frictional engagement with the spring to be releasably anchored thereby in the socket, and an ornamental head on the third-named disk.
