To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, H. F. W. LIEBMANN, ot the city of Chicago, county of (look, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in File-Gutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for cutting tiles, which will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a machine embracing my improvement; Fig.2, a cross vertical section of the same; and Fig. 3 another cross vertical section thereof, taken at right angles to the one shown in Fig. 2, and as indicated by the broken lines 3 3 in the lastnamed tigure.
findicates a file-blank, resting ina movable bed or box, \V, which has two vertical sides and a horizontal flange extending out from each side and projecting over the circular flanges of the feed-roller E, which is mounted upon l'eed-shal't-E, having its bearings in the frame A of the machine. The under side of the box \V is provided with teeth It, to gear with the teeth on the central portion of the feed-roller E. The box W is held up in position by the guide-roller F, which is mounted on shaft F, which is itself rendered adjustable vertically by its head-piece F and the vertical slot in the frame, and that roller and its shaft are adjusted vertically by means of the cam 11 on the shaft H andthe handle H,by means of which the file-blank and its boxcan at any time be raised up to or lowered down from the cutter c. The box or file-blank carrier W is shown in the drawings to have a bottom that is narrow in proportion to the height of its sides; but that fact is not material, since no claim is made herein for the exact proportions of said carrier. The bottom should be wide enough and the sides high enough for the reception of the file'blanks to be out; or a number of file-blank carriers may be kept on hand for blanks of different dimensions, provided always that their side flanges shall be adapted to the feed-roller. In case the box W is too deep or too widefora blank,its capacity may be made smaller by means of metal plates placed 0 under the blank to raise it higher, or on one or both sides of the blank to render it narrower.
So, likewise,where the blank shall taper from one end toward the other, or shall be irregular in its cross-section, it may be adjusted in position, and then held by suitable plates or strips of metal or other suitable material placed inside the carrier alongside the blank, and the whole held by the set-screws S The feedroller is not only toothed on its periphery, but has also teeth E on its face, to be operated upon by the ratchet-lever c, which is pivoted to the frame at P, and connected with the hammer-lever B by means of the connectingbar a, which is adjustable along the length of ratchet-lever e, at its lower end, by means of set-screw S', and at its upper end by means of the screw-shaft S, which turns in its box 0 to which bar a is bolted.
D is a guide-roller mounted adjustably on the shaft D, which is embraced by boxes D which have vertical play in the frame, and are supported by the springs D which connect the frame of the box of the shaft with the bearings of the screws S so that the height of the shaft may be regulated by the turning of the screw-shafts.

The chisel-holder is prot ided with a head, as shown, which rests upon the striker-arm (J and its body is adapted to turn freely in the vertical opening for it in the arm, and may be held to any adjustment desired horizontally by means of the set-screw S The lower endof the body of the chisel-holder is provided with a vertical and rectangular socket for the cutter c, as shown, and the cutter itself is simply a flat rectangular bar of steel having its lower end beveled into a cutting-edge, which may be' o sharpened from time to time as required. It is capable of vertical adjustment only, and this is efl'ectcd by simply placing suitable blocks betweenitsupperend andthe bottom of its socket in the chisel-holder, and this may be done from 5' time to time as the cutter by wear becomes too short for use. The edge of the cutter is adjusted to any angle required to the face of the blank by turning its holderin the end of arm C whereitis madefast by theset-screw S Spring 1011 O seated upon the frame,has the stiffness requisite for the purpose, and holds the strikerarm C bearing the chisel-holder and its chisel, up off the file-blank until the cam 0 upon its shaft C in the frame gradually forces it down upon the blank,just before a blow is struck by the hammer-head B upon the head of the chisel-holder.
I The driving-shaft B is provided with crankarms I) b, and pin 1) through them, upon which swings hammer-lever B having hammer-head B and having slot 0 through it, of suitable length to allowof the revolution of crank-arms and give reciprocating motion to the hammerhead 13. The two bearings B of the drivingshat't B are held between the points of two pairs of screw-shafts having their bearing in the frame, one pair, S, adapted to operate upon the upper side of the bearings, while the other pair, S, is adapted to operate upon theirlower sides from below, and by operating these screws the bearings and the shaft may be raised and lowered and the throw of the hammer-head increased or diminished, and this can be done, to a certain extent, without throwing the gearwheel B mounted on shaft B, out of gear with gear mounted on the shaft 0, which is designed to have the same motion imparted to it with the lever 13*.
The opening in cam-wheel U is oblong in form, as shown in Fig. 3, in order that it may be adjustable and stand more or less eccentrically upon its shaft 0 and depress the strikerarm C more or less, as'required, the specific function of that cam being to force the cutter 0 down upon the file-blank and hold it so just before the blow is struck upon the head of the chisel-holder by the hammer-head B. The
cam G is held to any adjustmentupon its shaft O by being clamped and held fast between two screw-nuts, N afid N, turning in different directionsand working in the shaft, as shown in Fig. 2. The file-blank is held against side motion in the box or carrier \V by the set-screws b, as before intimated. 'Tbe guide-roller D should be made of rubber, soft wood, or other elastic material, in order that it may hold the Iile-blank with force enough merely to prevent its slipping endviise while it is being moved under the cutter.
The operation of the machine is as follows: By each revolution of the driving-shaft B the hammeuhead 13" is brought down on the head of the chisel-holder and by means of the gears B and C the cam O, with which strikerarm C is always kept in contact by springs 0 forces the cutter 0 down on the file-blank a little before the blow is struck; but when the hammer-lever B is first raised, in order to acquire force and momentum for the blow the end of the lever to the left of the pivot-shaft ll is lowered, and by means of connectingbar a it depresses the outer end of ratchet-lever 0 and raises the other end, which engages with teeth E on the face of feed-wheel E and turns the same, and thus drives file-carrier W to the left and feeds the blank to the cutter. When the connecting-bar a is adjusted and fastened, by'the means hereinbefore explained, further removed from the pivot-shafts B and 1?, more motion will be imparted to the feed-roller E, and the cuts of the chisel will be made farther apart; but when that bar is brought nearer to these shafts the motion will be less and the cuts closer together. The lateral flanges extendingfrom the bottom of the carrier VVtravel upon the vertical flanges of the feed-roller E, and the carrier is by that means held in atrue vertical position and its movement rendered steady and even, while the feed-motion is imparted to the carrier by means of the teeth E upon the periphery of the feed-roller operating upon the teeth t on the under side of the carrier. In Fig. 3 the chisel-holder is shown to have the required inclination to the face of the blank to make the cut therein at a suitable vertical angle thereto.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to senre by Letters Patent, isy 1. The combination of the file-blank carrier W, provided with teeth t upon its bottom, and the feed-wheel E, adapted to feed the fileblank to the cutter, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the feed-wheel E, provided with vertical flanges, and also with teeth between such flanges, and ratchet-teeth E on its outer face, and the ratchet-lever e, adapted to transmit feed-motion to the carrier W from bar a. substantially as described.
3. The combination of the ratchet-lever e, hammer-lever B screw-shaft S, and connecting-bar a, with its set-screw S adapted to transmit motion from hammer lever B to ratchet-lever e and regulate the feed-motion, substantially as described.
at. The combination of the roller F, having head-piece F on shaft F, and the cam H on shaft'H adapted to let down, when required, the carrier W, substantially as described.
