AUGUSTUS n. JONES, OE MEEIDEN, CONNECTICUT, AsSIeNon TO THE CHARLES PARKER COMPANY, OE SAME PLACE..A
EXTENSION LAM P-FIXTURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,334, dated January 30, 1853.
Application filed December 152, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom fit may concern:
Beit known that I, AUGUSTUS H. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension Lamp-Fix'- tures, and l do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and-exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled Vin the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters oriigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for attaching pulleys and pulley-arbors to the suspend ing brackets or hangers ot' extension-lamps. Herctofore the hearing-posts for said arbors have been drilled to receive the same, and the arbor ends protruding through the holes thus made have been hammered to head them, and thus prevent detachment. This method is tedious and expensive, and it involves the use of malleable metal for the arbors, whereas the utmost hardness is desirable. I avoid these disadvantages by setting the ends of the pulley-arbors' into open recesses in the tops ofthe bearing-posts 4and securing them there by a cross-bar, which is clamped upon the tops of said posts and provided with depending lips or tlanges, which prevent the endwise motion ot' said arbors.
In theaccompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side view of a pulley hanger or bracket provided with devices embodying my inven tion. Fig. 2 represents a detail view ot' the cross-bar, and Fig. -represents a transverse section through one ot' the pulleys and' the proximate devices.
A designates the hanger, which consists ot' a metallic frame provided on opposite sides,
near its top, with bearing-posts a a, arranged in pairs and recessed on top to receive in each pair the arbor b ot' one of the pulleys B, used for the chains whereby the lamp and weight are suspended.
(J designates a cross-bar, which is bil'urcated at each end, so as to leave space for said pulleys and the chains passingoverthem, although with anges or lips C', which prevent the endwise motion ot' the said arbors by extending down on the outside of said posts and oppou site, respectively, to the ends of said arbors. This cross-bar has a central opening., and there is a central opening also in the bottom of the Through these openings, Aand hanger A. through a corresponding opening in the lower end of a suspending-loop, D, extends a rod or stern, E, .which is provided with al shoulder,
E', below said hanger, and with screw-threads c above the lower bar of said loop. A nut, F, turned home on said screw-threads, clamps said loop, cross-bar, and bracket firmly together, and thereby closes the bearings of the pulley-arbors. By turning oftl said nut all the aforesaid parts are readily separated.
The hardest material attainable may be used for the pulley-arbors, .as no 'modilication of their form is required in putting the parts together, and they will then be t'ar better suited to withstand the considerablel strain of the lamp and weight than if made ot' metal that can be headed like a rivet. There is also no need to drill any of the devices used. The arbors do not become permanent portions of the hanger, as after riveting, but may easily be separated therefrom. y Y
The same method of attachment may be applied to the arbors of pulleys used on shaderings or lamp-supports, when such are used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is
l. lu an extension lamp-fixture, a pulley provided with a detachable arbor, in combina tion with a bracket or hanger having bearings for said arbor, and devices which hold said arbor to said bearings and' prevent its separation from said pulley.
2.- A pulley-hanger provided with bearingposts which are recessed on top, in combination with pulley-arbors which set into said recesses, and a bar extending across said hanger, which is clamped to the tops ot said bearingposts.
