POWER ROCK-DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-No. 271,168, dated January, 231 1853.

Be it known that I, JoHN B. WAEING, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and usefulv Improvement in PowerRockDrills, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my improvement is fully de section, on a larger scale, of the motor, where-A by the thrust of the drill-rod is produced. Fig.

I will begin my description ofthe apparatusA pieces or yokes connected with them by pins a. The head-piece or yoke B has secured to it by a pin, b, a swivel-bearing, O, which is connected by a pin, c, with a foot-piece, O. The
upper head-piece or yoke, B, is provided with a screw, D, which may be turned by a bar inserted in holes cl in its head. 'lhe column A may be made in sections, united by thimbles E, if desired, as shown in Fig. 4.
I will now turn to the drill-spindle and the motor, whereby its thrustis effected.
F designates the drill-spindle, and G designates the cylinder, of the motor referred to. The piston H of the motor is secured to the inner end ofthe drill-spindle. The cylinder G of this motor is secured to a frame, I, and the drill-rod passes through such frame. This frame Iis provided with trunnions e, which fit in of a tunnel or shaft.

In the slide-pieces g are plates IL, which may, by means of screws i, be forced against the columns A, so as to clamp the slidepieces thereon. It will be readily understood that the drill-rod and motor may, by-meaus of these slide-pieces, be adjusted up or down on the columns oi the main frame and secured in different positions; also, that they may be adjusted at different angles relatively to said columns,owing to their support by the trunuions e in the bearings f. These adjustments, together with the adjustment which may be had by turning the main frame and the provisions for securing the drill-rod and motor on the main frame in different positions, enables the drill to be made to operate at any desired part The cylinder G of the motor has affixed to its outer end a cap, G', with which communicates a pipe, K. At the lower end it has affixed to it an externallyscrew threaded coupling piece, G2, which screws into one end ofthe frame I.
L is a bevel-gear wheel, which has yan opening extending centrally through it, and also has a hollowjournal. Its journal lits in the frame I opposite the cylinder, and is secured 'there by means of a nut,j, screwed onto its `adjacent to the end of the cylinder G. A cupshaped washer, N, is interposed between the tube M and the frame [,and a washer, O, preferably made of lignnm-vitie, is interposed between this cup-shaped washer and the said tube.
P designates a cap fitting around the drillspindle at the inner end of the cylinder G. It may be of cylindrical form, and has a flange which lits under the said end ot' the cylinder. A packing-ring,Q,of leather or other suitable material, is interposed between this cap and the liange of' the tubeM. This packing-ring bears on the drill-rod and obviates leakage around the same. The drill-spindle F passes through the tube M, the bevel-wheel L, and its hollow journal and extends beyond the same. It is locked to the tube M and the bevel-wheel IOO L by means of keys or splines L. The drillspindle will preferably consist of a metal pipe, as shown. To its outer end thedrill-rod F is Secured by a screw-threaded coupling-piece, F2. The inner end of the drill-spindle has affixed to it a tubular stem, F3, on which tits a cylindrical piece of metal forming the body of the piston H. Surrounding the stem F, between the body-piece of the piston and a flange on said stem, are washers F4 F5,made of lignumvitae, vhaving a metal washer,FG, titted between them. Surrounding the stem F3 and fitting against the other end of the body-piece of the piston is a lignum-vitae Washer, F7. A cappiece,F8, is screwed on the upper end of the stem and bears against the washer F7. Owing to this combination of parts the drill-spindle may be 'rotated without entailing the rotation of the piston, although itis directly connected with the piston. rlhe cap-piece F8 is shown as perforated.v When so made the motive agent will enter the drill-spindle and is conducted to the drill.
It designates a bevel-wheel, which gears into the bevel-wheel L,and is supported-on a shaft which extends through one of the trunnions of theframe I. This bevel-wheel R, as here shown, is of larger diameter than the bevel-wheel L, and serves to drive the same to impart the necessary rotary motion to the drill-spindle. The shaft of the bevel-wheel R may be rotated by any suitable means.
The pipe K leads to a port, 7c, in the shell of a rotary valve, S. A pipe, K', leads from a port, kf, in the shell of the said valve to near the inner end of the cylinder G. From a port, k2, in the shell of the said valve a pipe, K2, extends to the place where the waste or exvpended water or other motive agent is to be conveyed. A pipe, K3, leading from a port, 7c3, in one end of the shell of' the valve, extends to the source of supply ofthe water or other motive agent. The plug ot' the valve S has a double port, l, which may establish communication between the port lc and the port k2,lead ing to the waste-pipe K2. This port l may also, when the 4plug is properly turned, establish communication between the port 7c and the port k2, leading to the waste-pipe K2. The same port, when the plug is otherwise turned, may establish communication between the ports lc and k', so as to cutoff communication between the cylinder G and, the supply and waste pipes K3 K2. The plugot' the valve has also a port, l', which extends from its periphery `to the central portion of one ot' its ends. When the plug of the valve is turned so that the port l will establish communication between the port lc and the waste-port k2 the port Z will establish communication between the port 7c and the inlet-port k3, and when the plug is so turned that the port will establish communication between the port k andthe waste-port k2 the port l will establish communication between the port k and the inlet-port 7c3. rIhe stem of the plug extends through the cap of the shell, and is provided with a hand-wheel, whereby it may be manipulated. The ports ot' the valve are so combined that the piston can never move forward with asudden impulse in f case the drill should work into a soft stratum, and thereby have the resistance offered to it suddenly reduced. This is accomplished by giving a lead to the inlet-port, so that a full head of the motive agent will be admitted while the exhaust or outlet port is but slightly open. The inlet-port l' and the outlet-port t are made of different width to attain this end.
What I claim as my invention,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a drilling apparatus, the vcombination of a cylinder, a piston working therein, and a drill-spindle connected directly to the piston, so that it may rotate independently of the piston, and extending through the cylinder, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the drill-spindle F, the cylinder G, the piston H, and the round stem F3, secured to the inner end of the drillspindle and fitting in a round bearing in the body-piece of the said piston, whereby provision is afforded for the turning ot' the drill-spindle independently of said piston, substantially as specified.`
3. The combination of the drill-spindle F, the cylinder G, the tube M, and the cap Pand packing-ring Q, secured between the adjacent ends of said cylinder and tube, substantially as specified.
et. The combination of the cylinder G, the packing-ring Q, the cap P, the drill-spindle F, the tube M, and' the lignum-vitze washer O, substantially as speciiied.
5. In a drilling apparatus, the combination ot' a cylinder closed at one end, a piston fitting therein, and a drill-spindle connected direct-ly to the piston, so as to be free to rotate independently thereof, substantially as specified.
6. In a drilling apparatus, the combination `of a cylinder, a piston fitting therein, and a hollow drill-spindle connected to the piston and opening into said cylinder, substantially as specitied.
7. In a drilling apparatus, the combination ot'a cylinder, a piston it'ting therein, and a valve for controlling the same, provided with inlet-ports which are adapted to be opened in advance ot' the outlet-ports, substantially as specited.
8. The combination ot' the piston H, the drill-rod F,and the lignum-vitae washers FfFl, substantially as specilied.
9. The combination of the cylinder G, piston II, pipes K K', valve S, containing in its shell ports lc 'k' 16H63 and in its plug ports l l and the pipes K2 K3, substantially as specified. J. B. WARING.
