Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD B. STILSON, OF LESLIE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. B. DE LAMATER, OF SAME PLACE.
DRAG-SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,149, dated January 23, 1883. Application filed September 30, 1882. (X model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDWARD B. STILsoN, of Leslie, in the county of Inghani and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in.Drag-Saws; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved drag-saw. Fig. 2 is a side view of the 1 same with the saw raised off the log, and Fig. 3 is a side view with the saw hung in position for transportation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to drag-saws; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the frame.
In bearin gs at the apex of the frame is pivoted the bar B, which forms the fulcrum for the lever G, to the end of which bar D is hinged. The saw E is fastened in the end .of this bar by bolts or screws, or by any other suitable means.
The two handles F and G are fastened to the lever 0, one just above the fulcrum-bar B and the other some distance below it, and are braced and held together by a rod, H, passing from the upper handle, F, through the lower one, G, to the lower end of lever 0.
At the base of the frame, where the sawyer stands, is a board, I, hinged. This board, which has a slot, J, in its inner end, serves a double purpose-via, to hold the frame steady while sawing, by the sawyer standing on it, and to hold the free end of handle Gin the slot J when it is pressed down to raise the saw off the log, as shown in Fig. 2. The saw is guided in the log by the guide K, which consists of a rod bent to form a slot at its doubled pointand hinged at its free ends to the front of the frame. The doubled part of the guide (designated as 50 7c in the drawings) has two functions-to guide the saw in the part of it which is turned up held in this position by turning board I up and holding the free end of the handle G in the slot J. One or two dogs, L, are hinged to the sides of the frame, and are used to hold the log in position for sawing.
Across. the front part of the frame is a crossbar, M, onwhich slides a hook, N, by which the saw is held when the machine is moved.
By the foregoing description, taken in con- 6 nection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of my saw will be easily seen. By having the two handles F and G placed one above the other, and the longer one below the shorter, the sawyer has a better position for 0 exercising all his strength to the best advantage in working them than by only using one handle. The combination of the pinf, engaging with the guide when the handles are pressed down and the lower one is held in place by the slotted board 1, brings the saw v out of the way when the log requires handling,
and prevents any accident by the handle Gr being held fast in the slot of board I when it is turned up, as plainly shown at Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a drag-saw, the combination of the saw E, having pin fat its inner end, pitman D, 85 lever O, and handle G, fastened upon the lever, guide K, hinged to the front part of frame A, and having upturned doubled end It, and foot-board I, hinged to the lower rear part of frame A, and having slot J, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a drag-saw of the described class, the lever G for operating the saw, provided with a short and a long handle, F and G, connected to each other and to the lever by the oblique 5 brace-rod H, in combination with the hinged and slotted foot-board I, adapted to engage the free end of handle G, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
3. In a drag-saw, the combination of the mo frame A, fulcrum-bar B, pivoted in the apex to operate substantially as and for the purpoze [O of the frame, lever C, fastened to the fulcrumshown and set forth. bar, handlesF and G, fastened to the lever, and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as having brace H, pitman D, saw E, having pin my own I have hereunto affixed my signature 5 fat its inner end, guide K, hinged to the front in presence of two witnesses.
of the frame, and having bent doubled end 70, I EDWARD B. STILSON. dog L, hinged to the frame, and foot-board I, Witnesses: hinged to the lower rear part of the frame, and F. G. WOODWORTH,
having slot J, all constructed and combined MATTIE WOODWORTH.
