UNITED STATES CHARLES A. E. BUEBEL,.OF CHILLICOTHE, OHIO.
BURG LAR-PROOF SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,131, dated January 2,3, 18,83.
Application filed November' $27, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. E. RUEBEL, an alien and a native of Germany, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Proof Safes 5 andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a partei this specication. u
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in burglar-proof safes; and it consists in providing a safe with a series of metallic slats which are arranged within the walls of the safe,` so that when the safe is tampered with or an attempt is made to bore through the same an electric circuit will be broken and an alarm sounded, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view, showing a part ofthe safe broken away so as to expose the slats or electric conductors. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing arrangement of the slats. Fig. 3 is an end view ofa section ofthe safe, and Fig. 4 is a detailed view of one ofthe slats or electric conductors.
Arepresents a safe or other structure, which has inner and outer walls, between which a space is provided for the reception ofthe slats B.A This space entirely surrounds the safe, and the slats B, which have their ends cut away, as shown at a, rest between and upon strips of pliable non-conducting material b b, which are placed between the walls of the safe, preferablyadjacentto thecornersthereof. The slats B are provided near the central portions with nibs or raised portions c, and they are placed or located between the walls, so that the nibs will rest upon the adjacent slats, as
(No model.)
l shown in Fig. 3. At or near the corners of the safe these series oislats are connected with each other, so as to form an electric connection, and they are connected to terminal wires, which extend through the safe, so as to form connection with a battery andasuitable alarm, preferably such an alarm as will sound when the connection is broken. By this arrangement, if an attempt is made to bore or drill through the safe, the drill will strike upon one ot' the strips, and, they being supported within the safe upon elastic or pliable strips b b of non-conducting material, they will be pressed forward so asto .break the connection, and thus cause an alarm to be sounded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A-safe provided with a series of overlapping` electric conductors, located between the walls and insulated therefrom, substantially 'as shown and described.
2. A safehaving an intermediate space between the walls and electric conducting-slats supported upon and between pliable non-conducting material, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the sal'e having inner and outer walls, the slats B, havingA the ends cut away, as shown, and provided with a central raised portion, c, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a safe, a series ot' electric conductors supported between the walls and insulated therefrom, in combination with an electric alarm mechanism which will sound an alarm when the circuitis broken, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. E. RUEBEL.
W'itnesses:
FRANK HENN, ADAM GRIEsHEIMER.
