Description
B. KENNEDY June l21, 1'955 GLOVE Filed Jan. 27. 1954 INVENTOR. Bert' Kenne dy lillllllill United States Patent 2,710,970 Patented June 21, 1955 tice The present invention relates to a glove, and more particularly, to a lined glove, and is directed to the provision of a glove of the character described having multiple utility.
it is an object of the present invention to provide a full-fingered, lined glove that may be worn as a dress glove and may also be used, if desired, as a boxing glove, particularly for light or practice boxing or sparring.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a lined dress glove of the character described which, despite the presence of the lining, which normally makes the flexing of the hand to make a tight fist diicult, will nevertheless permit of the tight clenching of the hand to exert a tight grip, so that the glove may not only be worn for dress and warmth but may be comfortably, conveniently and efi'iciently used in work and in sports activities, as in winter driving, to grip the driving wheel firmly and steadily, or in skiing, to hold the ski poles firmly and tightly or to firmly grasp a ski tow rope, or for similar purposes.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a glove of the character described which is of generally attractive appearance, which is comfortable to wear and to use and which it is relatively easy and economical to produce.
The foregoing and other useful and desirable characteristics and advantages of the glove of the present invention will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing and from the description following. It is to be understood, however, that such embodiment is shown by way of illustration only, to make the principles and practice of the invention more readily cornprehensible, and without any intent of limiting the 1nvention to the specific details therein shown.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is an elevational view of the front or palm side of a glove embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the back of the glove shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, enlarged, sectional view taken ou line 3-3 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary, enlarged, sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2. n
Referring now in greater detail to the accompanying drawing, the glove of the present invention therein illustrated comprises an outer glove member, 10, which may be of leather or of a woven textile material or other material or fabric suitable for the purpose, and an inner glove member or lining 11, preferably of a knitted textile or of animal fur, or of other material suitable for the purpose.
The glove, both outer and inner members thereof, comprises the full fingers, 12, the front palm and wrist portions, 14 and 15, with the thumb, 16, set thereinto, and the rear palm and wrist portions, 17 and 18, respectively.
The front and rear tranks of the outer glove member may be formed of separate parts which may be connected to one another directly or through fourchettes, or may, as illustrated, be integrally formed and connected to one another along one edge, as at 19, and along the edges of the finger portions of each, as at 21. The lining 11 f may be made in any desired manner, as in one piece or in y several connected sections, and may be secured to [the may be of the conventional tubular type, or may bev outer glove member 10, as along the edge of the wrist opening, as at 23, or may be loosely held therein, or may even be eliminated.
The wrist portion of the glove of the present invention slotted at the front and provided with snap-fasteners, or may be slotted at the side, or may, as illustrated, be provided with a slot 25 at the front Wrist portion 15, and provided with a gusset 26 underlying the slot 25 and secured around the edges thereof which edges are provided with eyes 28, through which a tying lace 29 may be passed.
The glove of the present invention is provided with a rounded, outwardly bulging padded strip, 30, extending approximately transversely of the upper portion of the front palm section 14, close to its junction with the lingers 12. This arrangement of the strip 30 places it in position to resiliently support the lingers when the hand is clenched so that the glove may be used for boxing purposes. In this position the strip 30 also fills up the space inside of the fist, when the hand is clenched, whereby the glove may be used to provide a tight grip on anything grasped in the st, even though the lined glove makes the formation of a tight st rather difficult, and makes the glove of the invention useful for work and play, as in tightly holding a ski pole, or tightly grasping a ski tow rope or in holding an automobile wheel safely and comfortably while driving.
Such padded bulge may comprise a preferably arcuately cross-sectioned roll of padding material, 31, which may comprise curled animal hair, such as curled hogs hair, or any other suitable material that will provide a resilient padding. Such roll of padding material 31 is placed with its rounded side against the inner face of the front palm section 14, adjacent its upper end, and may be held in place by a strip of fabric 32 that overlies its flat face and isvsecured, along each side edge thereof, to the fabric of the outer glove member, as by the stitching 33.
A similar, but preferably wider, padded bulge, 35, may be provided at the lower edge of the rear wrist portion of the outer glove member 10, which may be similarly formed of a roll of padding, 36, secured in place by a strip of fabric, 37, secured in place by the stitching 39. Such padded bulge may serve to protect the back of the hand and wrist and is also in the nature of an ornamental detail for the glove.
This completes the description of the glove of the present invention. It will be apparent that though it may be worn as a dress glove, it may also relatively safely be used for boxing purposes and that it may most efciently and comfortably and conveniently be used for any work or sport that requires the exertion of a strong grip on an object, with a minimum strain on the hand and the fingers.
It will also be apparent that numerous variations and modifications of the glove of the present invention may be made by any one skilled in the art, in accordance with the principles of the invention hereinbefore set forth, and without the use of any inventive ingenuity. I desire, therefore, to be protected for any and all such variations and modifications that may be made within the spirit of the present invention and the scope of the claims hereto appended.
What I claim is:
l. A full fingered dress glove having a front palm section and a wrist section, said glove having a resiliently padded ybulging area extending approximately transversely across wthe Vouter -face of the upper -part of said front palm section adjacent its junction with the glove ngers, and a second rcsiliently padded bulging area extending approximately `transversely across the outer face of the rear wrist section adjacent the glove edge.
2. A full-fingered, 'lined dress glove having a front palm section ,and a wrist section, said glove having a resiliently padded bulging area extending approximately transversely across the 4outer face of the upper part of said front palm section adjacent its junction with the glove rtingers, Land a second resiliently padded bulging area extending approximately transversely across the lower part of the outer face of the rear wrist section, adjacent the glove edge.
3. The glove of claim 2, wherein each of said bulging areas comprises an elongated pad of a resilient material -and'ot approximately arcuate cross section disposed with its arcuate face against the inner face of the outer glove fabric, inwardly of the lining thereof, and a strip of fabric disposed fiatly against the at face of said pad and against the inner face of the outer glove fabric and secured to said glove fabric along the edges of said pad.
