SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,093, dated January 23, 1883. Application filed August 14, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIJ'AH W. MGLENDON, of Martins Station, in the county ofDallas and in the State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletrees and Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in wh'lffletrees and irons; and it has for its objects to provide certain means whereby the ferrule may be secured to the whiffletree, and also the central cuff, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fignre I represents a side elevation of my improved whiffletree. Fig. 2 represents a sectional View taken on the line was of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section on the line 3 y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. represents a side elevation of a modification of my invention. Fig. 5 represents a section on the line mm of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 represents a sectional View on the line 3 yof Fig. 4, and Fig. 7 represents a side elevation of a modification of the ferrule.

The letter A indicates the whifflctree, and B the ferrules. As shown in Fig. 1, the ferrules are constructed with grooves around the peripheries, into which are adapted to be shrunk the links 0, to which the hooks D are attached, the link serving to clamp the ferrule to its seat- The cuff is split at E, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, so that it may be placed upon the whiffletree conveniently and secured thereon by the link. The link is held in place by the notch F and the bolts G, which pass through the whiffletree and the cuff.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4. the ferrules are provided with lugs H,between which the hooks are pivoted, and the end is made in two pieces with a groove for the reception of the link. In the modification shown in Fig. 7 the thimble is provided with a hook formed on or attached directly to it. I

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. In combination with the whiffletree, the ferrules provided with grooves in their peripheries and with links adapted to be shrunk into the grooves, substantially as specified.

2. In combination with the end, the link adapted to be shrunk thereon, whereby the cuff is confined to its seat, substantially as specified.
