DETACHABLE LEG STRUCTURE FOR TABLE TOPS Filed Sept. 25, 1953 wiikiiiimi H f lllllllllll Uted States Patent DETACHABLE LEG STRUCTURE non TABLE Tore William J. Haynes, Sr., Bonner Springs, Kane, assignor to Leavenworth Steel, Inc., Kansas Qity, Rana, a corporation of Kansas Application September 25, 1953, Serial No. 382,373
2 Claims. (Cl. 311-114) This invention relates in general to collapsible furniture, and in particular to a leg structure for tables in which each leg is separately and readily detachable, yet pleasing in appearance and thoroughly reliable in operation.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a table leg structure which may be associated with a flat panel to form a quickly set-up table assembly that is strong and rigid when in use, but that can be quickly knockeddown for purposes of storage or transportation when desired.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a table assembly which has the strength and rigidity of a permanent construction when the detachable legs are positively clamped to a top panel, but which, in use, is
completely flexible in that the same set of legs can be attached to top panels of various sizes according to the needs of the owner.
Further objects will become apparent as the following specification progresses, wherein reference will be had to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a table assembly having detachable leg structure made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged, fragmentary, perspective view of the leg structure, showing the same in detached condition.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, fragmentary, plan view of the table illustrated in Fig. l, showingone detachable leg in place thereon.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional view taken on line lVlV of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 5 is a detailed, sectional view, taken on line V-V of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate similar parts, a detachable leg structure is broadly designated by the numeral 10, and is shown in association with a top panel 12, there being a separate structure it! for each corner of panel 12.
Each leg structure It consists of an elongated standard 14 having a threaded portion 16 at one end thereof and a head 18 (Fig. 5) integral with the threaded end 16. A cap 20 is freely rotatable on head 18.
Viewing Fig. 2, there is provided a bracket 22 for each standard 14 which bracket may be fabricated from any suitable, light-weight material having suflicient strength and rigidity for the purposes intended. Each bracket 22, in turn, has L-shaped side plates 24 presenting inturned flanges 26 extending from the upper edges of the side plates 24. Gusset plate 28 interconnects the lower edges of each bracket 22 and is rigidly attached thereto.
in the illustrated bracket 22, the side plates 24 meet at substantially a right angle, and the flanges 26 and the gusset plate 28 are substantially perpendicular to the side plates 24. Obviously, brackets 22 may be provided which have any desired angle between side plates 24, so that the particular leg structure It may be adapted for top panels any particular edge configuration.
ice
12 having more than four sides, even to the extent of providing arcuate brackets 22 for round top panels 12.
On the lower surface of gusset plate 28, there is an internally threaded boss 30 which receives (Fig. 4) the threaded end portion 16 of standard 14. Boss 30 has its axis in a plane bisecting the angle between side plates 24.
Thus, it can be seen that the leg structure 10 is adapted for use with the panel 12 merely by fitting identical leg structures 10 on each corner of the panel 12, and rotating each standard 14 until the cap 20 thereon engages the bottom surface of the panel 12. The flanges 26 engage the top marginal edges of the panel 12, and the particular location of the boss 30 centrally on the gusset plate 28 insures equal clamping pressure by each of the flanges 26. A hole 32 in each standard 14 may receive any instrument suitable for applying the pressure needed to rotate the standard and its cap 26 about the longitudinal axis and thus move cap 20 into or out of firm gripping engagement with the bottom surface of panel 12. The insertion of shims, not here shown, between the cap 20 and the bottom surface of a panel 12 will compensate for uneven surfaces on which the table is to be used.
Manifestly, brackets 22 of any desired, angular contour may be provided as necessary for top panels 12 of The embracing function of the brackets 2.2 and caps 20 remains the same in such instances, the only requirement being that sufficient leg structures 10 be provided for supplying the necessary strength and stability.
It is apparent from the foregoing that many changes and modifications may be made to the leg structure 10 itself and its uses and adaptations without departing from the spirit of this invention, and therefore, it is desired that the instant disclosure be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent:
1. For use with a table top, a number of detachable leg structures, each comprising a bracket having angularly disposed side plates and an inturned, top-engaging flange at the normally uppermost edge thereof; a gusset interconnecting the side plates at the normally lowermost edge thereof, said gusset being provided with an opening equidistant from the side plates, there being an integral boss on the gusset therebeneath, said boss having an internally threaded passage in communication with the opening; and an elongated standard having a threaded length adjacent one end thereof and extending through said passage in screw-threaded engagement therewith, there being a top-engaging cap freely and rotatably mounted on said standard at said one end thereof, whereby to permit releasable attachment of each leg structure to a table top at a corner thereof with said flange in engagement with one face of the top at the marginal edge thereof and said cap in clamping engagement with the opposite face of said top in bisecting relationship to said corner.
2. For use with a table top, a number of detachable leg structures, each comprising a bracket having a substantially L-shaped side plate provided with a pair of legs and an inturned, top-engaging flange at the normally uppermost edge thereof; a gusset interconnecting the legs at the normally lowermost end thereof, there being a boss formed integrally with the gusset therebeneath and provided with an internally threaded passage extending through the boss and said gusset; and an elongated stand ard having a threaded length adjacent one end thereof in screw-threaded engagement with the boss within said passage, there being a top-engaging cap freely and rotatably mounted on said standard at said one end thereof, whereby to permit releasable attachment of each leg structure to a table top at a corner thereof with said 3 flange in engagement with one face of the top at the marginal edge thereof and said cap in clamping engage ment with the opposite face of said top.
