PAINT CAN COVER Filed May 22, 1953 I N VENTOR.
Dmflilalke ATTD R N EYE United States Patent PAINT CAN COVER David F. Fatke, Rochester, N. Y.
Application May 22, 1953, Serial No. 356,842
3 Claims. (Cl. 220--42) This invention relates to a paint can, and more particularly to a cover for a paint can.
The object of the invention is to provide a paint can which is constructed so that paint will readily drain back into the can from the upper annular groove.
Another object of the invention is to provide a paint can which includes a headed pin that is adapted to be used for pushing out knockout plugs so that paint will be able to drain back into the can from the upper annular groove therein.
A further object of the invention is to provide a paint can and cover which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the cover mounted on the can.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the can showing the knockout plugs and with the cover removed.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral designates a paint can which includes an annular side wall 11 and a top member 12 which may be secured thereto. The top member 12 includes an annular groove or socket member 14 which is provided with a plurality of knockout plugs 15, Figures 2 and 4.
Mounted on the top of the can 10 when the can is not being used by the painter, is a cover or lid 16. The cover 16 includes an enlarged shoulder 17 which is provided with an opening 18 through which slidably projects a pin 19.
The pin 19 includes a shank or stem 20 and a head 22, and by pressing down on the pin 19 when the cover 16 is on the can, the stem 20 will dislodge or knockout the plugs so as to leave the openings 21. Thus, any paint in the annular grooved portion 14 will be able to drain "ice back into the paint can through the openings 21. A portion of the stem 20 of the pin may be peened or enlarged as at 23. The enlarged portion 23 of the pin will hold the pin against accidental displacement from the cover after the pin has been applied to the cover and said parts are formed.
From the foregoing it is apparent that a paint can and cover has been provided which will insure that paint or other contents of the can will drain out of the trough 12 and back into the can. Thus, the paint or other liquid matter will not harden and clog up the trough 12. The pin 19 is carried by the cover 16 and this pin is adapted to be used for knocking out the plugs 15 so that the openings 21 are exposed or opened whereby paint will be permitted to flow back into the can from the groove portion 12.
It is to be undertsood that the pin 19 and the head thereof can be of different shapes or sizes and these pins will lock themselves in their downward positions. Also, the pin may be tapered so as to facilitate the knocking out of the plugs 15. Any number of the knockout plugs 15 can be provided as desired.
I claim:
1. In a paint can, an annular top member provided with an annular upwardly facing groove therein, a cover having a depending annular rib adapted to seat in said groove, means for permitting paint from the groove to drain back into the paint can, said means comprising a plurality of knockout plugs positioned in the bottom of said groove, and a pin slidably connected in said rib for selective engagement with said plugs.
2. The apparatus as described in claim 1, and further including a head arranged on the upper end of said pin.
3. In a paint can, a body including a cylindrical side wall, an annular top member mounted on the upper end of said side wall and provided with an upwardly facing annular groove, a plurality of knockout plugs mounted in the bottom of said groove, a cover mounted on said top member and including an annular depending rib seated in said groove, an enlarged shoulder formed in said rib, and a headed pin slidably supported by the shoulder in said rib for selective engagement with said plugs, said pin including an elongated stem, a portion of said stem being enlarged, the enlarged portion of said pin being arranged intermediate the ends thereof.
