DUBY GREEN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
THlLL COUP LING AND DETACHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 270,658, dated January 16, 183,
Application filed June 6,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUBY GREEN, of Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thill Coupling and Detacher, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved thill coupling and detacher. Fig. 2 isa top view of same. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clip and housing, with the yoke, elastic cushion, and thill-iron removed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the elastic cushion. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the thill-iron. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the improved yoke. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the detachinglever; Fig.9, a perspective view ofthe arm, rod, or standard for manipulating the detachinglever; and Fig. 10, a perspective view of the lid for the housing.
The object of this invention is to provide a thill-coupling so constructed and arranged as to absolutely prevent all noise or rattling of v the different parts, and has also a detaching device so combined and arranged that the thilliron can be instantaneously released from the clips by the occupants of the vehicle.
The clip A is constructed in the usual manner, and is provided on the front side with a housing, B, which is designed to receive a peculiarly-formed elastic cushion,'O. The housing B is preferably cast or forged with the clip A, and is open above and below, and the upper half of the front wall is also cut away, as shown by D, Fig. 4.
To the rear of the chamber E, on the upper side of the housing, is a transverse aperture or hole, F, designed to receive a rod, G, which rod also passes through the ears H of the lid H, Fig. 10, which fits over the upper opening of' the chamber E. The rodor bar G is, however, capable of being rotated independently of the lid H, and in practice extends across to the opposite clip on the axle. A lever, I, is secured to this bar by the side of one of the clips, and its forward end projects forward and downward, terminating in a right-angled projection, J, which extends under the thill-iron.
The rear end extends backwardly and upwardly, terminating in an eye, J, to which is firmly in position by the nuts W.
hinged the lower end of a bar, rod, or standard, K, whereby the occupants of the vehicle The yoke P projects forward, and is bent upwardly at right angles, as shown at Q, Fig. 7, terminating in a scroll, R, which fits into the seat 0 of the cushion O.
The book M of the thill-iron N is placed in the socket L of the cushion O, and the upturned end Q and scroll R therefore constitute the support for the thill-iron in connection with the elastic cushion. It will be observed that the hook M is thereby entirely prevented from coming in contact with metal, and since the lid H prevents extraneous matter and moisture from entering, the liability of wear is reduced to the minimum. The lidH is preferablylined on the under side with rubber, felt, or similarmaterial, to prevent rattling in case it should become loose.
In the use of this device the cushion C is first placed in the chamber E from the lower side, after which the upturned end of the yoke is inserted between the forward wall of the housing and the elastic cushion, so that the scroll It fits snugly in its seat 0. At the same time the lower ends, T, of the clip enter the apertures U of the yoke, and said yoke is held The thilliron hook M is then inserted in the curved socket L, and the device is ready for use.
The rod or bar G, which extends from clip to clip and carries the lever I, serves to disengage both the hooks M at the same instant when the operator exerts a downward pressure on the standard K.
What I claim is- 1. In a thill-coupling, the clip A, having on its forward side the ch amber E,in combination with the elastic cushion 0, having the curved socket L and seat 0, substantially as herein shown.
2. In a thill-coupling, the clip A, having the ICO chamber E and the elastic cushion, as shown, with the yoke I, provided with the upturned end Q and scroll R, substantially as herein set forth.
3. In a thill'coupling, an elastic cushion, 0, cast or molded with a circular or curved socket to receive a curved hook, as described, thereby preventing said hook from coming in contact with metal in the housing or chamber, substantially as herein shown.
4. The elastic cushion 0, having the curved socket L and seat 0, in combination with the curved thill-iron and the upturned yoke, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In thill couplings and detachers, the clip A, having the transverse aperture F, in combination with the shaft bar or rod G, extending from clip to clip, having, the lever I, provided with the right-angled side projection, J, at the forward end, and the vertical standard K, hinged thereto at the rear end, substantially as herein set forth.
6. In thill couplings and detachers, the detaching-lever I, having at the forward end the side projection, J, extending under the thilliron N, and in combination thercwith, substantially as and for the purposc herein shown.
7. The clip A, having the housing B on the forward side, lid H, elastic cushion 0, provided with the curved socket L, and seat 0, in combination with the yoke I, having the upturned extension Q and scroll R, and with the curved thill-iron M, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, this 2d day of June, 1882, in the presence of witnesses.
DUBY GREEN.
itnesses:
