W. A. FRUHLING, Jr.
NASAL RESPIRATOR.
No. 270,655. Patented Jan.16,1883.
/ .1 VEN 11. WITNESSES:
UNHED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. FRUHLING, JR., or SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
NASAL RESPI-RATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,655, dated January 16, 1883.
Application filed August 31, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. FRUHLING, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Nasal Respirators, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying d ra win gs.
My invention relates to a nasal respirator for preventing inhalation of dust into the nostrils and offensive and impure atmosphere into the lungs, and it consists in the metallic frame A, the elastic clasps O, the fabric or gauze C, and in the combination and arrangement ofthe parts, as hereinafter more fully specified.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views thereof.
B represents a curved metallic slip bent into a form corresponding with the outlines of the horizontal contour of the nose where it projects immediately above the mouth. To this slip are rigidly secured, as shown, the elastic clasps 0. These clasps project upward from the metallic slip B a short distance, then are slightly curved toward the wider part of the frame, and are then again curved upward at b, where they clasp the nose, as shown. On the (No model.)
curved metallic slip B is placed such fabric or gauze, metallic or otherwise, as may be most suitable to the character of the dust or atmosphere to which the wearer may be exposed. Sponge cut into thin strips or sheets may also be employed, and thus employed it may be saturated'with soothing or healing medicinal solutions, or such solutions as may be useful in neutralizin gofi'ensive or poisonous atmosphere. The fabric is then secured upon the curved metallic slip by the metallic clamp 67, which is made a little longer than the curved metallic slip B. The ends of the clamp d are bent over and rigidly compressed against the fabric 0, thus holding it securely in position.
I am aware that nasal respirators are not broadly new; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the curved metallic slip B, fabric or gauze O, metallic clamp 01, and
"clasps (J, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. FRUHLING, JR. Witnesses:
