7 Claims. (Cl. 155-43) This invention relates to an article of furniture, and more particularly to a novel convertible table which is adapted for use as a rocking seat.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of an article of furniture which is adapted for use alternatively as a table and as a rocking seat.
The construction of this invention especially features an article of furniture which is provided with arcuate side members which form seats for arcuate flanges depending from a table top or wh-ich are adapted to be utilized as the rockers of a rocking seat. Also incorporated in the invention is a novel panel which is designed to perform alternatively the function of a seat panel and of a guard. The legs of the table also serve as supports for transverse grab bars when the device is utilized as a rocking seat, the grab bars rigidifying the construction of the legs.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a convertible article of furniture that is strong and durable, simple in construction and manufacture, which is highly pleasing in appearance, and which is capable of being utilized by children for various purposes while requiring considerably less space for storage than would be necessitated by two separate articles of furniture.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention, which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this convertible table, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of the invention shown in use as a table;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the convertible table shown as being used as a rocking seat;
Figure 3 is a plan View of the invention;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 4 4 in Figure 3 and illustrating in particular the construction of the panels which also serve as guards; and
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view as taken along theplane of line 5--5 in Figure 4.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, the reference numeral generally designates the convertible table comprising the present invention. This convertible table includes a platform 12 which has depending therefrom legs 14, 16, 18 and 20. The legs may be secured in any convenient manner to the platform 12 as may be necessary.
Secured to the legs 14 and 16 and seating in apertures in the lower portions of the legs 14 and 16 is a grab bar 22 which serves to rigidify the legs 14 and 16. A grab bar 24 also extends between the legs 18 and 20.
Secured to the legs 14, 16, 18 and 20 as by bolts 26 or by any other suitable means and to the platform 12, if desired, is a pair of spaced side members 28 and 30 which are arcuate in shape so as to form convex rocking surfaces 32 and 34 when the convertible table is positioned for use as a rocking seat as shown in Figure 2.
Attached to the side members 28 and 30 are end members 36 and 38 which are adapted to form a back rest for the seat members 40 and 42 also bolted or otherwise attached to the side members 28 and 30 and which extend therebetween. Also secured to the side members 28 and 30 are side support members 44, 46, 48, and 50 which form side rests for the seats when the article of furniture is adapted to be used as a rocking seat, the side members 28 and 30 serving as side supports when the invention is used as a table.
Hingedly secured as at 52 and 54 to the seat members 42 and 44 are seat panels 56 and 58 on which the children or other persons using this article of furniture are adapted to seat when the device is used as a table. However, in order to close the space between the seats 40 and 42 when the convertible article of furniture is used as a rocking seat, the seat panels 56 and 58 are adapted to be pivoted to the position as shown in phantom lines in Figure 4 and as can be seen in Figure 2, thereby preventing the legs of children or the like from extending beneath the plaiform 12 or otherwise being subject to injury. The panels 56 and 58 are held in their extended position by latch members 60 and 62 pivotally attached as at 64 and 66 to the side members 28 and 30. l
For use as a table, there is provided a table top 66 which has recesses 67 and 69 -in the ends thereof to permit access to the seats formed by the seat panels 56 and 58. When the device is utilized as a table, flanges 68 and 70 having arcuately concaved lower surfaces are adapted to be positioned on the side members 28 and 30fto interlock therewith and thus hold the table top 68 in position. It is to be noted that the platform 12 in this position will serve as a desk or storage place, leav-ing the table top? 66 free for other purposes. Further, the platform 12 when the article of furniture is inverted to the position as shown in Figure 2 will form a platform for the feet of the children using the invention.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood, and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described7 and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
