' Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the handle moved to adjusted angular position relative to the hair cutting and shaving portion of the device.
Fig. 10 is a fragmentary elevational view showing a modification of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the combined hair cutter and safety razor made in accordance with the invention comprises a hair cutting and shaving portion 10, a detachable handle portion 11 and a connecting portion 12.
The hair cutting and shaving portion 10 as seen in Fig. 2, includes a J-shaped plate 13 and a straight plate 14 detachably connected to the J-shaped plate. The frame plate 13 consists of a long fiat arm 15, terminating at one end in a looped portion 16 which continues into a short flat arm 17. The outer free end of the short arm diverges slightly away from the long arm 15. At each side of its transverse center, the long arm is formed on its inner surface with a depressed portion forming a recess 18, and secured in each recess is a rack or plate member 19 having spaced grooves 20, extending longitudinally of the arm. The upper ends of the walls of the grooves protrude slightly above the inner surface of the arm 15. An enlargement 21 is integrally formed on the opposite end of the long arm 15 thereby providing a shoulder 22. The outer surface of the shouldered end curves inwardly as indicated at 23 and projecting from the center of said curved end is a stud extension 24.
The stud extension has a fiat inner surface 25 and an arcuate-shaped outer surface 26 provided with external screw threads 27.
At one end, the frame plate 14 is depressed along its longitudinal center to form a recess 28, and at its opposite end is formed with a screw-threaded stud extension 29 similar to the stud extension 24 of the plate 13. When assembled, the recess 28 is adapted to receive a lug 30 formed integrally on the outer end of the short arm 17, the plate 14 forming a prolongation of the short arm with its stud extension 29 in opposed and aligned relation with the stud extension 24 of the arm 15, the screw threads of the extension studs being on the outside.
An elongated guard bar 31 substantially the length of the long arm 15 is detachably mounted along each long edge of said arm 15. Each bar is formed with curved serrations 32 along one long edge thereof, and along the opposite long edge is a pair of spaced pins 33 protruding from one surface thereof. The bars are adapted to be removably supported on the rack or grooved plates 19, with the pins 33 projected into selected grooves 20, with their ends adjacent the shoulder 22.
Formed integrally on the inner surface of the frame plate 14 at its center and protruding outwardly therefrom is a rib member 34. A cutting implement in the form of a double-edged safety razor blade 35, having an elongated slot 36, is carried by the plate 14, the blade slot being positioned over and interlocked with the rib. With the plate 14 in position as shown in Fig. 1, the blade 35 is positioned over and supported by the guard bars 31. The serrations 32 of the bar project past the edges of the blade and serve to space said edges from the hair and skin.
The frame plates 13 and 14 cover and guard the blade leaving only the side edges of the blade exposed.
The handle portion 11 is formed with a reduced or thinned inner end 36 forming shoulders 37, the reduced end being provided with a transverse hole 38. A pair of plates 39 are riveted at one end to the opposite sides of the reduced end 36' by a rivet 40, in the hole 38, leaving a space 41 therebetween. The outer surfaces of the plates 39 are flush with the outer surfaces of the handle portion 11 and form a prolongation of the handle portion, with the ends of the plates abutting against the shoulders 37.
The connecting portion 12 consists of a flat bar 42 having a bifurcated or forked end 43 and having an elongated slot 44 aligned with the space between the bifurcations of the end 43. The other end of the bar 42 is formed with a cylindrical socket member 45 providing a shoulder 46. The outer surface of the socket member is curved and its inner surface is formed with screw threads 47. A rivet 48 connects the outer ends of the plates 39 of the handle portion and passes loosely through the slot 44 of bar 42, serving as a pivot and guide for the handle portion 11.
In operation, the connecting bar 42 is slid along the pivot 48 until its bifurcated end 43 slides over and interlocks with the reduced end portion 36' of the handle portion 11. The hair cutting and shaving portion is coupled to the bar 42 by pressing the frame plates 13 and 14 together against the spring action of the diverging small arm 17 to bring their threaded extension studs 24 and 29, respectively, sufficiently close together to permit them to be inserted into the socket member 45. The extension studs will tend to spread apart and thus intimately engage the threads 47 of the socket member whereupon by turning the frame plates, the hair cutting and shaving portion will be secured to the handle portion.
When the bifurcated end 43 of the connecting bar 42 is interlocked with the reduced handle end 36, the handle portion and hair cutting and shaving portion are in alignment as seen in Fig. 1, and the implement is adapted to be used as a hair cutting and trimming device by merely stroking the hair as in a combing operation.
In order to use the implement as a straight razor for shaving, the bar 42 may be pulled outwardly of the handle portion until its bifurcated end 43 is clear of the outer edge of the reduced end portion 36' of the handle portion, the bar being slid along the pivot 48. When the bifurcated end has cleared said reduced end, the handle portion may be tilted, using the rivet 48 as a pivot, to any desired angle such as shown in Fig. 9. When the handle portion is so tilted, the corners of the ends of the handle plates 39 frictionally engage the flange 46 of the socket member 45 to hold the handle portionv releasably in moved position.
The flange 46 may, however, be provided with a roughened surface such as indicated at 49 in Fig. 10, against which the corners of the plates 39 may interlock in order to hold the handle portion in moved position.
It Will be seen that ready adjustment of the implement may be made by merely moving the guard bars 31 laterally of the arm to change the relative position of the blade and the guard bars so that different size cuts of hair may be obtained. The hair is usually shorter as one proceeds from the back of the head towards the neck.
A diflferent guard ba'r adiustment is preferred when the cut is applied to hair of different lengths, the shorter the hair which is being cut, the closer the edge of the blade is adjusted to the tips of the serrations 32. When the tips of the serrations 32 are moved even or approximately even with the edges of the blade, the implement may be used as a razor. Hence, the length of hair to be cut may be suited by adjusting the guard bars 31 so that the edges of the blade overlie more or less of the length of the serrations.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
