STRAW -STACKER FOR THRASHlNG-MACHlNES.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 270,471, dated January 9, 1853,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EUGENE L. PERRY, of 'larkersburg, in the county ot'Butler and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Straw-Smokers for Thrashing-Machines; and 1 do hereby declare that the followii'ig is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, which will enable others skilled in "the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of part of a thrashing-machine provided with my improved strawstacker, and Fig. 2 is a. longitudinal vertical section of the same.

The same letters of reference indicate the same or corresponding parts in both the figures.

My invention has relation to straw-stackers for thrashing-machines, and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

1n the accompanyingdrawings, theletter A designates the lrame ofthe thrashing-machine, and B the straw-carrier.

Ois the separating-shoe, and D the fans, and E is the dischargetube for the thrashed grain, which is fed to either side of the machine by an endless apron and reversing-gear,F.

G is the stacker, which consists ofan inclined floor, H, and a cover, I, of canvas or other flexible material. The stacker is hinged to the lower rear part of the frame at J, and the floor is made in two pieces, the outer one, K, hinged to the inner one, L, at M. The flexible cover is fastened to the top and sides of the. rear opening of the thrashing-machine by means of bails or staples N passing through button-holes in the edges of the cover, through which rods 0 are passed, holding the cover in place.

The stacker may be raised and lowered by means of ropes P, which are fastened to the end of the inner half and carried over a wind lass, Q.

To keep the cover from sagging, and thus obstructing the rear opening of the thrasher, through which the chaff and dust are blown out upon the straw and carried up in the stack,

two ropes, S, are fastened to an arc, R,-which supports the cover at the hinge, and pass over pulleys T upon the sides of the frame, near the'top, and have weights a suspended from their ends. These weights are provided with bailsV, which slide upon rods W upon the sides of the frame, by which they are guided. As the stacker is raised or lowered the weights will slide down or up on the guide-rods, keeping the ropes S taut and supporting the folds of the cover.

Y The outer end of the stacker is provided with an arched frame, X, hinged to the sides of the stacker at Y. The cover is fastened to this frame, and forms a hood over the end of the stacker, the-cover being supported by a bow, Z, upon the stacker-floor. By lowering this hood the straw, chatf, anddust will be deflected, droppingdown in the stack. the person in the stack being protected by the hood against the dust and chafl' blown out of the machine. I

The stacker maybe constructed with an end-- less band or a series of revolving rollers upon the inclined bottom H, or with any other contrivance for elevating the straw.

Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a stacker, the combination of the inclined plane H, the continuous flexible cover I, arched frame X, hinged to the end of the inclined plane at Y, and bow Z, supporting the flexible cover, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

2. The combination of the machine-frame, the stacker-frame, means for raising and lowering the; same, the flexible cover, the cords or ropes S, pulleys T on the sides of the machine, over which said cords pass, weights a, and guide-rods W, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
