APPARATUS FOR SEVERING TAPE MOUNTED on A SPOOL Filed.Aug. 20, 1951 INVEN TOR.
LOUIS DOUGLAS WALKER United States Patent APPARATUS FOR SEVERING TAPE MOUNTED ON A SPOOL Louis Douglas Walker, Youngstown, Ohio Application August 20, 1951, Serial No. 242,674
2 Claims. (Cl. 164-845) The invention relates to a fix position cutter for severing adhesive tape.
Present methods of severing adhesive tape by usmg a pair of scissors, a pen-knife or by tearing off strips of tape by hand is inconvenient and extremely troublesome.
An object of the invention is to provide a fix positron cutter fastened to the conventional reel or roll of adheslve tape ready for instant use in the severing of strips of tape.
\A further object of the invention is to provide a fix position cutter that is transferable from a used up reel or roll of adhesive tape to a new reel or roll.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fix position cutter;
Figure 2 is a view of the fix position cutter fastened onto the reel or roll of adhesive tape;
Figure 3 is a side view of the fix position cutter with cross wire hooked up;
Figure 4 is a view of the fix position cutter at point of severing a strip of adhesive tape;
Figure 5 is a view of the fix position cutter after a strip of tape has been severed and the reel or roll with the fix position cutter fastened onto it is being put back into its own case without removing the fix position cutter.
Referring to the drawings, and in particular to Figure 1, which is a perspective view of the fix position cutter, a substantially flat main frame 11, having a first end 14, and a second end and two sides, has a pair of compressing arcuate spring fingers 12 and 13, with the finger 13 lying within the finger 12 and extending from the second end, and a cross wire 15, with a U-shaped hook 16 in one end and the opposite end fastened to the main frame 11, by being fastened into eyelet 17 or eyelet 18, whichever is selected, and the outside compressing arcuate spring finger 12 has hooks 19, 20, 21 and 22 longitudinally spaced on its outer surface.
Refern'ng to Figure 2, the fix position cutter is fitted onto the conventional reel or roll of adhesive tape by placing the main frame having cross wire attached into one eyelet 17 or one eyelet 18 whichever is in line with the open space between body of the tape and side wall of the spool, down on the tape and in between the circular side-walls of the reel or roll and then pressing the compressing arcuate spring fingers 12 and 13, onto the reel or roll of adhesive tape and hooking the U- j shaped hook 16, of cross wire 15, into hook 19, or i into hook 20, 21 or 22, on the outer surface of the compressing arcuate spring circular finger 12, depending on the yardage size of the reel or roll of adhesive tape 'selecj ted by the user, and the fix position cutter is ready for 1 use.
Figure 3 is a side view of the fix position cutter fastened onto the conventional reel or roll of adhesive tape by placing the main frame having cross wire 15 attached into one eyelet 17 or one eyelet 18 whichever is in line with open space between the body of tape and sidewall of the spool, down on the tape and in between the circular side-walls of the reel or roll and the compressing arcuate spring fingers 12 and 13, pressed onto the tape wound on the reel or roll, and the U-shaped hook 16, of cross wire 15, hooked into hook 19, on the outside surface of the compressing arcuate spring finger 12, and the fix position cutter is ready for use in severing strips of adhesive tape.
2,703,615 Patented Mar. 8, 1955 'ice :Figure 4 shows the rotary action of the fix position cutter which is produced by pulling a strip of tape against the first end of main frame, as the strip is pulled off the reel or roll of adhesive tape for severance and stops when the pulling of the tape is stopped, and at that point the thumb of the hand holding the reel or roll with the fix position cutter fastened onto it, is pressed on the main frame 11, just back of the first end of the main frame, to hold the fix position cutter stationary and the strip of tape which has been pulled off the reel or roll of adhesive tape by the other hand is pulled back against the first end of the main frame, and severed.
Figure 5 shows the fix position cutter which is compactly fastened onto the reel or roll of adhesive tape remains in its last position after severing a strip of tape and the reel or roll is being put back into its own case with the fix position cutter fastened onto it.
While I have herein disclosed one embodiment of my invention and described the manner of its use, it will be understood that my invention may be embodied in many other forms without departing from the spirit thereof, as will be obvious to those skilled in the art, and it will further be understood that the disclosure herein is merely il lustrative and is not to be interpreted in a limiting sense and I am not limiting myself other than that called for by some prior art.
Having thus described my invention and having illustrated its use, I make the following claims as new and useful and wish to secure them by Letters Patent:
'1 claim:
1. An apparatus of the class described for severing tape mounted on a spool comprising in combination, a substantially fiat cutting frame having a first and second end and two sides, a cutting edge at said first end, an eyelet in each of said sides, a pair of compressing arcuate spring fingers joined to the frame and extending from said second end, said fingers comprising an outer finger and an inner finger lying within the outer finger, a series of hooks longitudinally spaced on the outer surface of the outer finger, a cross wire with an eyelet in one end thereof cooperably hooked into one of the eyelets on the frame and a U-shaped hook in the opposite end of the cross wire cooperably hooked into one of said hooks on the outer finger, thereby making a union around the spool of tape which prevents disengagement of the cutter during the operation of pulling strips of tape off the spool and against the cutting edge for severance.
2. An apparatus of the class described for severing tape mounted on a spool comprising in combination, a substantially fiat cutting frame having a first and second end and two sides, a cutting edge at said first end, an eyelet in each of said sides, a pair of compressing arcuate spring fingers joined to the frame and extending from said second end, said fingers comprising an outer finger and an inner finger lying within the outer finger, a series of hooks longitudinally spaced on the outer surface of the outer finger, a cross wire with an eyelet in one end thereof cooperably hooked into one of the eyelets in said frame and a U-shaped hook in the opposite end of said cross wire cooperably hooked into one of the hooks on the outer finger, thereby making a union around the spool of tape to prevent disengagement of the frame during the operation of pulling strips of tape off the spool and against the adjacent cutting edge for severance with the union being adjustable by unhooking the U-shaped hook from the hook on the outer finger and rehooking it with another hook in said series to take up slack caused by depleting the spool and further adjustable in the same way until the spool is entirely depleted.
