NECKTIE EMBODYING MECHANICAL KNOT Filed Jan. 28, 1952 $.Pea Z'e INVENTOR ATTORNEYS United States Patent The. present invention relates to: four-ill-hand. tie construction, the: primary object of the invention being to provide a four-in-hand tie including a preformed knot. constructed of suitable semi+rigidsheet material of plastic or metal capable of being bent or formed=into a hollow body portion.
An important object of the invention is to provide a" hollow preformed knot which is constructed in such a way that comparatively short. lengths oftie cloth material may be readily and easily removably connected to p the preformed knot, providing an exceptionally attractive tie having outstanding ornamental characteristics, due consideration being also given to the fact that an exceptionally cheap tie may be provided, by: using. the unworn portions of the conventional tie, and which are usuallydiscarded.
Another object of the invention is to provide a preformed knot used. in, connection with four-in-hand knots of any desired size.
A further object of theinvention is to provide: means for positioning on the preformed knot to be attached to the shirt collar with which the necktie is used, providing a holding device for holding the collar down to prevent the pointed ends from turning upwardly and presenting an unsightly appearance.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a stiffening plate to be removably secured to the end of the necktie cloth insertable in the hollow knot section of the tie, to lend rigidity to the tie to hold it in place within the knot.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view taken from the rear of the hollow knot section of the tie.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough, illustrating the tie cloth material as secured within the knot, the ends of the neck band being also removably held within the knot.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a stifiening plate which is secured to the end of the tie cloth material which is insertable in the hollow knot section.
Fig. 4 is a view illustrating a stiffening band which is secured to one end of the cloth material to be used in lieu of the stiffening plate as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing.
Fig. 5 is a fragmental sectional view through a modified form of the invention illustrating a spring arm as a means for securing the tie cloth within one end of the knot.
Fig. 6 is a front elevational view illustrating a preformed tie knot secured within a collar.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a collar hold down member.
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view through a preformed knot with the hollow hold down member as POSI- tioned therein.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the necktie comprises the hollow knot section indicated generally by the reference character 5, the knot section bemg constructed preferably of semi-rigid sheet material such as plastic, metal or the like, the material being such that 2,702,905 Patented Mar. 1, 1955 it may be readily bent and curved to the desired shape.
As shown, the hollow knot section comprises a substantially triangular strip of sheet material with portions of the side edges thereof curled inwardly providing spaced flanges 7, the. flanges being also spaced from the rear surface of. the triangular strip of sheet material providing the necessary space therebetween.
The flanges 7 follow the general contour of the triangular strip of sheet metal, and provide the opening 8' at. the pointed or narrow end of. the: knot section.
Securedinthe wide upper end of the knot section, is the plate 9 which has an upwardly and downwardly curved end portion 10 which has its edge spaced from the upper edges of the flanges 7, as: clearly shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The reference character 11 indicates a length of tie cloth: material of which. the major portion of the tie is constructed, the end of: the tie cloth material being supplied with the stiffening plate 12 shown more clearly by Fig. 3 of the drawing. This stiffening plate 12 is substantially triangular in shape and is provided with pairs of spaced arms 13 which extend laterally from the pointed or narrow end of the stiffening plate, while at the upper end of the stiffening plate 12 are the arms 14' that? also extend laterally therefrom. These arms 13' and 14 are so arranged that they may be bent over the end' of the tie cloth material to be used with the preformed knot in securing the stifiening plate to the tie cloth: material, the general design of the stiffening plate being such that it will wedge between the contracted ends of the: flanges 7 and hold the tie. cloth material, which in the present showing is indicated by the reference character A, in: position. It will of course be understood that the tiecloth material is placed against the stiffening plate 12 in such a way that the forward arms 13 of each pair may be bent around the cloth material at the front of the stiffening plate, while the adjacent arms 13 may be bent around the cloth material which is positioned over the stiffening plate, at the back of the stiffening plate. The arms 14 are now also bent around that portion of the tie cloth material extending over the wide or upper end of the stiffening plate, securely holding the tie cloth material to the stiffening plate.
It might be further stated that the type of stiffening plate shown at 12 is also used on the ends 15 and 16 of the neck band, the ends 15 and 16 of the neck band being connected by the elastic strap 17 provided with the adjusting buckle 18 used to adjust the length of the neck band to meet various requirements of use.
As shown by Fig. 4 of the drawing, the bendable band 19 is provided for folding around one end of the tie cloth material to stiffen the tie cloth material and provide rigid means for holding the end of the tie cloth material within the hollow knot section.
As shown by Fig. 5 of the drawing, the yieldable wire 20 is constructed to provide the loop 21 and outwardly extended spring arms 22. In using this form of attaching device, the end of the tie cloth material is wrapped around the loop 21 and the ends of the loop or spring arms 22 are now pressed inwardly and the device positioned within the contracted portion of the preformed knot section. It will be seen that as the arms 22 expand, the tie cloth material will be securely gripped between the loop and arms and the inner surface of the knot section.
In Fig. 6 of the drawing, the preformed knot section is provided with an ornamental stone or similar device indicated at 23 to enhance the appearance of the pre formed knot. In this form of the invention, the spring arms 24 are provided and are attached to opposite sides of the preformed knot 5, with the opposite ends thereof extending downwardly to points adjacent to the pointed ends of the collar, where the arms are provided with spring clamps 25 that clamp over the edges of the collar.
Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the collar points will not only be held down preventing unsightly upturning, but will at the same time compensate for movements of the body and head, to maintain the collar in its proper position.
As shown by Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawing, a hold down collar member is provided, the hold down collar member being constructed of a length of yieldable wire material bent upon itself to provide the connecting bar 26, and leg members 27 connected by the curved portions 28, which curved portions 28 lend resiliency to the connecting bar 26 to cause it to become tightly wedged under the upwardly and downwardly curved end portion of the preformed knot with which the collar hold down member is used.
The leg members 27 are also formed with laterally extended loops 29 terminating in laterally extended arms 30, the loops being of such a construction that they will closely fit under the curved flanges 7 of the preformed knot section.
Secured on the free ends of the arms 30 are coiled springs 31 to the free ends of which are secured clamps 32 that are designed to clamp over the edges of the collar with which the device is used.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a four-in-hand necktie including a substantially rigid knot section which may be made of any desirable material preferably studded with precious stones or other ornamentation, to which lengths of tie cloth material are secured in such a way that the tie cloth material may be readily alllld easily removed and replaced, to change the design of t etie.
