Description

(No Model.) S S A. BUUKELL.
. cLBvIs. Nd. 270,201. Patented Jan 9,1883.
WITNESSES INVENTOH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT BUOKELL, OF PONTIAC, MICHIGAN.
CLEVISQ.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 270,201, dated January 9, 1823.
Application filed September 12, 1882. (No model.)
ofdevices and appliances hereinafter specified,
and more particularly pointed outin the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clevis embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the arm removed from the head of the clevis-pin.
Heretofore much difficulty has been experienced in the use of clevises from the working loose of the clevis-pins.
It is the object of my invention to provide clevises with a simple and inexpensive device to remedy this difficulty and hold the pins securely in position. I accomplish this result by attaching to the clevis an adjustable arm or spring so constructed and arranged that one end of the same can he brought to bear upon the head of the pin and held firmly in said position, thereby preventing the pin from working loose.
To this end, as shown in the accompanying drawings,A represents an ordinary U-shaped clevis, B the independent detachable clevispin, and bthe head of the pin. 0 is anarm or spring, pivoted to one of the rigid arms of the clevis, as shown at c, in such a manner that when properly adjusted one of its ends I shall rest upon the head of the pin B. While it is evident that this arm 0 may be secured to any ordinary clevis, I propose to construct the clevis with a depression, A, adapted to firmly in position upon the head of the pin, 1 also prefer to construct the clevis with a notch, a, adapted to receive the opposite end of the arm, so that the arm will be prevented from being accidentally displaced from its position. It is obvious, however, that the head of the clevis pin' might be so constructed as to hold the arm from being displaced when adjusted upon it. 1 design to construct said arm either of spring or other metal.
What I claim ist 1. The combination, with a clevis provided with rigid arms and'an independent pin, ot' the arm 0, pivoted to one ofthe said rigid arms of the clevis, and adapted to be turned upon its pivot, so as to be brought into engagement with the head of the clevis-pin, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a clevis having a notch, a, in one of itsrigid arms and provided with a detachable pin, of the arm 0, pivoted to one of said rigid arms of the clevis, substantially as described, whereby when one end of the pivoted arm is brought into position to hold the pin in the clevis the opposite end of such pivoted arm shall engage. in the notch for the purpose of looking it.
ALBERT BUGKELL.
