  • This invention relates to doll constructions and means and mechanisms associated therewith for transmitting manually created or activated movement from various points on the doll body to pivot or otherwise move the arms and legs or either thereof selectively. More particularly, the invention is directed to novel and inexpensive constructions adapted to be built with, incorporated in, or combined with doll bodies whereby manually applied pressure will activate the arms or legs which are usually hingedly or pivotally connected thereto.

Application March 7, 1951, Serial No. 214,354 7 Claims. (Cl. 46119) This is a continuation-in-part of Patent No. 2,548,237, filed November 29, 1943, and patented April 10, 1951.
This invention relates to doll constructions and means and mechanisms associated therewith for transmitting manually created or activated movement from various points on the doll body to pivot or otherwise move the arms and legs or either thereof selectively. More particularly, the invention is directed to novel and inexpensive constructions adapted to be built with, incorporated in, or combined with doll bodies whereby manually applied pressure will activate the arms or legs which are usually hingedly or pivotally connected thereto.
It is an important object of my invention to provide, in association with doll bodies, a novel and inexpensive means, including a roll or rollers or pulleys or shafts or pins with oifset cranked portions, journalled within the body and having flexible bands or connecting elements connected with the pivoted or journalled means which mount the arms and legs to the body, and whereby pressure-applied movement to a portion of said means will selectively pivot either the arms or the legs or both there of, or other movable parts of doll.
A further object of my invention is the provision of means for transmitting manually actuated movement from a yieldable, movable or elastic element on the doll body surface through journalled rollers or shaftsor pins with offset cranked portions, levers and bands or belts to the journalled rods or other journalled elements which mount the arms or legs on the doll body, and which include spring or elastic means or manually activated movement in either direction by means of depression of lever means for returning the movable parts and also the arms or legs to original positions.
Other and further important objects of my invention will be apparent from the following description and appended claims.
This invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described with reference to numerals on the drawings.
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a typical doll illustrating a yieldable, flexible or elastic element mounted on and covering an opening in the front part thereof.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on a vertical plane through the doll body and illustrating parts of the limbs broken away.

Referring to the drawings, reference numeral 10 designates a conventional form of back section of a doll body which, in most instances, is molded or cast in concave form conforming to a doll body shape, and reference numeral 11 designates the front section which is usually molded or cast from suitable material and which is of a size to fit with and register with the back section 10 so that when two sections are assembled and secured together by a suitable means during the course of manufacture of dolls, the same will substantially simulate the human body. In the usual manufacture of dolls, the front and back sections are made separately, this providing for relatively quick and easy mounting and connection of the head and limbs by conventional forms of securing or fastening members Whereafter the front or belly portion is cemented or otherwise secured in place.
The said front and back body sections 10 and 11 are cast or otherwise formed with integral neck portions, illustrated by reference numeral 12, and which neck defines an annular opening 13, which receives the jointforming extended portion of a head member 71. Said front and back body sections 10 and 11 are also formed during their manufacture with substantially semicircular recesses which are so located that when the front and back sections are secured together, said recesses will form a pair of shoulder or arm or joint receiving openings 14 and also a pair of oppositely directed leg receiving openings 15, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Reference numeral 16 illustrates or designates arms having upper socket joints with upper inwardly pivoted and inwardly extending socket joints which fit loosely or at least movably, in the openings 14 of the body. Reference numeral 17 designates legs whose upper inwardly extending portions forming rounded extensions movably fit into the openings 15 and whose surfaces slidably and flexibly engage the edges of the defined openings 15.
The legs 17 have formed therein, preferably during the molding process, elongated passages 18,. which open inwardly as illustrated in Fig. 2, and which are so posi tioned that they will be in alignment when the legs are in normal position. The inner ends of said passages 18 are preferably slightly enlarged, and optional sleeve joint or socket members 19, which have their inner end portions preferably expanded or flared outwardly, are secured in said passages 18 respectively, either during the molding process of the legs or subsequently. Said hearing or sleeve members 19, which are optional, are preferably mounted in both the passages 18 and in the inwardly opening passages 20 of the arms and may be of illiptcal cross-section as for example as illustrated in As the arms and legs are individually and separately molded, the bearing elements or sleeves 19 may be cast directly into socket or joint portions of one or more-of the legs and one or more of the arms. For example one end of the pin may be cast directly on one arm and the other end of the pin cemented on in the assembly of the doll.

and mounting element for the legs 17 and whose ends are of such size thatthey may be forcibly inserted into the passages. The ends of the pintle or shaft 21, are preferably slightly enlarged as for example, by substantial impact on the ends thereof, so as to form optional peripheral flanges which. when the legs are mounted, will be disposed beyond the narrow portion of thepassage or opening defined by bearing sleeves 19 and which will lie substantially between the outwardly flaring flanges on the inner ends of bearing sleeves 195, so as to securely hold the legs together against any normal force which would normally be imparted thereto during use of the doll.
The opposite ends of the shaft 21 are. preferably of such cross-sectional shape as to. correspond to the sleeve or jointmembers or bearing members 12 so that rotative movement imparted to. the shaft 21 will be transmitted to pivot the legs. The sleeves or anchoring members 19 may: optionally be longitudinally slit so as to allow for slight expansion when the respective ends of shaft 21 are mountedthereto.
Reference numeral 22 designates a pin, pintle, shaft and anchorging member, preferably of metal, which may be of. any desired cross-section, and optionally similar to shaft 21 thereof and of such length so as to extend from within the passage 20 of one of the arms to the corresponding passage of the opposite arm. I desire it to be understood that either the shaft 21 or shaft 22 may have either one or both of their respective ends securely mounted in the respective arms or legs by directly molding or cementing the same, as for example as illustrated in'the upper left of Fig. 2 wherein the end portion of the shaft 22' is bent at an angle for more secure mounting thereof. Referring to the particular illustration of Fig. 2, the back section it; has formed in the opposite side walls adjacent to the edges thereof, a pair of aligned inwardly opening recesses or passages 24 and 25. The latter passage 25, preferably extends from the outer to the inner surface of the side wall as indicated at the right of Fig. 2. Optionally inwardly extending integral bosses 27 may be formed on the said opposite walls, the said respective passages extending therethrough as illustrated. A shaft, shaft like member, or pin 26, of metal, wood or other suitable material and which may be of one or more parts has one end securely mounted or optionally journalled in the passage 24 and its other end mounted or optionally journalled in passage 25. Said shaft may be inserted either from the outside of the body through passage 25 to mount the same, or in instances where the passaged bosses 27 are formed immediately adjacent the central edges of the body portions, the pin or shaft 26 may be merely placed and mounted into said passages or recesses from above. Inwa'rdly extending edge portions of the front section 11, when securely cemented in place partially over said recesses or passages, may retain said shaft or pin 26 in position.
Mounted -on pin 26 are a pair of substantially adjacent co-axial rollers, rotors or pulleys 28 and 29 respectively which are journalled on said pin 26 so as to be movable independently of each other. These rollers may be mounted in the described or an equivalent manner by holding the same in position and then inserting the pin 26 therethrough, and mounting the ends 'of said pin'as has been described. In those instances when the pin 26 is inserted from outside of the body and through the passage of the side wall of back section it), the outer portion of the passage 25 beyond the end of pin 26 may be closed or plugged with cement or any suitable plug as indicated by numeral 30in Fig. 2.
A flexible band 31 of any suitable material, i. e., fabric, has one end turned about shaft 22 and secured thereto by any suitable fastening means or fastening element, as for example, a staple 32 as illustrated in Fig. 3. The opposite end portion of band 31 is disposed over the upper or front surface ofrol ler 29 and thence partially rotated thereabout and also anchored in any suitable manner to the surface of said roller 29.
A second flexible band 33 of any suitable material is passed over and around the 'backor underside of roller 28 and the end portion thereof secured by pin, staple or other fastening element to said roller 23 and the other end portion of said band passes over the front surface of'leg shaft 21 and -at least partially wound therearound and fastened by a pin, staple or other equivalent fastening element,-substantiallyas-illustrated in Fig. 3. -It will be apparent that rotation of roller 28 in a forward and downward direction will rotate shaft 21 in the opposite direction and thereby pivot or move forwardly the legs anchored thereto.
The front section 11 of the body has formed therein, preferably during the casting and molding process, an opening 34 of substantial size, said opening being preferably defined by an integral inwardly extending flange 35 as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 7. A flexible fabric member 36, which is pref'erablythough optionally of a rubber, elastic or rubberized composition, is secured over said opening 34 by cement, adhesive or equivalent means and in such a manner that same may be manually depressed inwardly.
Mounted within the doll body and below said opening 34 is an optional compressible coil spring 37 whose base end portion is preferably mounted about an inwardly extending stud or boss 33 formed integral with the back wall of back section 10, and which is of a length to substantially reach or engage the flexible strip or panel 36 A lever or arm 39, preferably of metal, has one end connected to or secured upon roller 29, and its free end is preferably gradually curved and disposed so as to normally lie under or adjacent to the inner side portion of. the flexible panel 3o. A second lever or arm 4h, has one end mounted upon the roller 28 and its'outwardly free end is preferably curved and is also normally disposed under and substantially adjacent to the inner side portion of the flexible panel in. A second optional expansion spring 37a is mounted with its base in the back of the back section 10 and its opposite end in substantial contact with the under surface of free curved end of lever or arm 4! One spring 37 may be satisfactorily utilized for both said curved levers where the same is of suflicient size and area so that its forward end would engage both said levers.
Said levers or arms 39 and 4d optionally formed of bands or strips of metal or other suitable material are adjustably mounted about the rollers 28 and 29 respectively with the aid of screws, such as securing screw 41 as illustrated in Fig. 3, so as to provide for the full, quick and easy adjustment of the positions of said levers or arms when it is desired to tighten the bands 31 and 33 respectively to taut position when said levers are in normally retracted position adjacent the fabric member 36. When it is desired to properly mount the said levers 39 and 40, the screws {31 are loosened and the rollers or rotors 28 and 29 rotated until the belts or hands 33 and 31 are taut, and then the screws 41 are tightened to clamp the said levers on said rollers while the free end of lever 39 is in retracted position.
Referring to Fig. 7, I here show a transverse crosssectional view taken on line 77 of Fig. 6 as illustrated. A pair of optional depressible members, buttons or plugs 42 respectively are adapted to be positioned in side by side relationsh p and in Fig. 7 I illustrate in cross section only one of said depressible members or plugs 42, it being understood that both thereof are preferably substantially similar and of substantially semi-circular form and in side by side relation.
One satisfactory manner in which said depressible members may be made is illustrated in cross-section in Fig. 7, wherein the same is composed of a substantially flat metal disk 42: which is secured to a cup-like member 42b, which preferably has the optional annular flange 42c as indicated to define between said flange and the edge portions of disk or plate 420 an annular space in which the edge portions of the body which define said front opening are disposed. The said annular space designated as 42d is of .suflicient size so that said depressible member or members 42 may be moved inwardly and outwardly. Each of the depressible members 42 may have connected thereto an optional inwardly extending eyelet 44in which the .freecurved end of one of the levers 39, 40, respectively, may be movable so that said depressible member 42 may, when depressed, cause the curved end'of said levers .to move in said eyelet or eyelets 44.
It will be apparent that utilization of members substantiallylike vor equivalent to members 42 will dispense with any use of an elastic and yieldable' panel suchas 36 over the said front opening, and that eitherof said depressible members Tmaybe selectively depressed accordingto the part of .the doll desired to be moved.
Referring to Fig. 8, I have illustrated in dotted lines extending toward the right hand portion thereof, typical positions of a flexible band or hands 31a, whose end portion or portions at the right hand part of the figure are illustrated as connected to the bent end or anchoring hook of an inwardly extending arm or lever 48. It will be noted that numeral 49 designates an extension or upwardly extending end portion of band 31a. However, band 49 may be a separate band which is connected to either of the rollers 62 or 63.
In the doll construction which is proposed here, it will be noted that a shaft 70a is journalled within the head and an eye is secured to each end of the shaft 70a by means of arm 70. Also in the construction which is proposed and a tongue 84a is secured to a rotatable shaft 84b by means of member 84. It is further to be appreciated that as the shafts or pins 70a and 84b to which the eye and tongue are secured are rotated that the eyes will either open or close and that the tongue will move in or out depending upon the direction of rotation of the respective pins or shafts. Band 49 may be connected to the shaft 84b which controls the tongue and to the shaft 70a which controls the eyes. From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that downward movement of the band 49 will cause the shafts 70a, 84b to rotate clockwise or counterclockwise, as viewed in Figure 10, depending upon whether band 49 is connected to the respective shafts 70a, 84b rearwardly (as' shown) or forwardly of the pivotal axes of the eye and tongue. Such rocking movement of the shafts 70a, 84b causes the tongue to move outwardly or inwardly, and the eyes to open or close depending upon the direction of rotational movement of the shafts. If it is desired to have control of the eyes in both directions with respect to the movements of the other members of the anatomy, referring to Figures 12 and 13 an additional band 49a is provided. The band 49a is connected to roller 62 and is connected to the shaft to which the lever or arm 70 is secured. The band 49 is connected to the roller 63 and is connected to the arm 70. It will be noted that the connections of the bands 49, 49a to the shaft 78a are disposed on diametrically opposite sides thereof. Thus, rotational movement of the roller 62 in one direction will cause the eyes as one unit to move in a particular direction and movement of roller 63 in the same direction will cause the eyes to move in the opposite direction because of the opposite connection to the shaft 70a controlling the movement of the eyes.
Further referring to Fig. 8 it will be noted that one end of the flexible band 31 is attached to offset portion 51a of the crank 51. The opposite end of band 31 is connected to roller 63, as illustrated in Fig. 9. It will be observed therefore thatby depressing the lever 39 hand 31 will be caused to roll on roller 63 to thereby cause the arm to swing forwardly and upwardly. One end of flexible band 33 is attached to offset bail 53a of crank 53 and the opposite end secured to the roller 62. The roller 62 is rotated by depression of lever 40 (a portion of which is shown in Fig. 9) causing the legs to move forwardly and upwardly. It is to be understood that the modification embraced herein includes the concept of making rollers 62 and 63 integral or a single roller.
Reference numeral 50 designates an elastic spring element, preferably a rubber band or the like, which has one end operatively connected to a rear portion of the head, as for example on a portion of the inwardly extending arm 48. The opposite end of the elastic element or member 50 may be connected to any stationary part of the doll body or to an axially aligned portion of the crank member 51, so that when the head is moved, pivoted or tilted in a generallyforward direction, the elasticmember 50 will return the same to substantially normal position when the depressing means herein described is released.
It will be understood that the extent or degree of movement which is desired to be imparted to the particular movable part may be adjusted or regulated by varying the size of the roller or rollers or rotors 28 and 29, to which the opposite ends ofthe bands, cables or belts 31 are connected, or in the case of use of bent metal crank shafts 54, by varying the length of the offset bail or crank portions, two of which are designated as 55 and 56 in Fig. 6.

In Fig. 5, taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2, I have shown the end portion of shaft 22, which is preferably of oval cross-section mounted in the split metal sleeve 19 which is of substantially similar shape, and which is preferably corrugated and uneven so that the same will be firmly anchored against rotation and withdrawal in plastic moldable material of which the arms and legs are molded or cast. It will be understood that such sleeves similar to 19 may be cast and mounted into both the arms and legs to provide for their secure and proper mounting and so that they will rotate with the connect-,
ing shafts 22 and 21 respectively.
The lever 39 shown in Figs. 6 and 7 has one end suitably secured by welding to an intermediate portion of crank member 54 so that upon depression of said lever,
said crank member 54 will be partially rotated.
The flexible band 31 has one end connected to one offset part or crank member 54 and its other end connected to the normally rearwardly, extending bail 51a of crank member 51, the opposite ends of said crank member 51 being suitably mounted and anchored in the arms 16. The other offset member 55 has the band 33 connected thereto and the other end of said band 33 is connected to the offset member 53a of crank member.

As an example of a returning element, an optional elastic element 58 may be connected to the offset member 55 and to the end portion of crank member 53 so as to normally return the crank member 54 and the lever 39 to original position and to simultaneously aid in returning the arms and legs to normal position substantially alongside and parallel to the body. The said elastic member 58 may optionally be anchored to any stationary element Within the'body, such as the wall of the front section 11, by means of an optional rivet or fastening element 60 as illustrated in the lower left hand portion of Fig. 7.
It is to be understood that in the construction where crank members are partially rotated to move parts of the doll that the shaft connecting the arms and legs or shaft connecting some other movable member of the doll as well as the central shaft, to'which levers are aflixed to offset crank portions, can be divided into two or more independently operating sections as illustrated in Fig. 11. The inner ends of the said respective sec tions of said shaft are preferably reduced as shown in dotted line in Fig. lland said respective reduced end portions as shown in dotted line in Fig. 11 are inserted in interfitting relation in the end-opening of the respective opposed other halfor portion of shaft or section of shaft, each said shaft or section of shaft having an offset crank portion as shown in Fig. 6 and each offset crank portion of said central shaft or pin has affixed and connectedthereto a lever as shown in said Figs. 6 and 11 so that the various offset crank portions of the divided shaft of said arms and legs or other divided shaft connecting some other movable member of the doll can be operatively connected to an offset crank portion of shaft having crank portion or portions each preferably with individual levers attached to crank portion as illustrated in Fig. 6, so that the depression of a lever Will cause said operatively thereto connected members to function independently and to rotate in the same or opposite directions to the other operatively connected members of the other offset crank portion or portions of said shaft, said direction of rotation depending upon the position and setting of the offset crank portion relative to the position of lever on its connected shaft.
As illustrated in Fig. 11 the various crank portions of a shaft can, if desired, be made to function and operate as one unit or piece by merely tightly setting a set screw 82 or stud against the inserted end of opposing pin or section of shaft.
While Fig. 8 illustrates in side elevation only one of the depressible levers 39, having a depressible spring 37 mounted beneath the same in the manner hereinabove described, I desire it to be understood that said construction illustrated in Fig. 8 optionally has two such levers, each whereof are suitably secured and extending substantially radially from a pair of coaxial rollers or rotors 62 and 63, which levers and rollers are illustrated in longitudinal cross-section in Fig. 9. Said rollers 62 and 63 may be mounted in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2 and may be made of either Wood, metal or other suitable material. The forwardportion of the head or neck is illustrated in Fig. 10 as provided with an anchoring hook or inward extension 48:: which is operatively connected, by t link or connecting member or band 31b to the bail-like'portionSS, of crank member 54 Reference numeral 75 designates a fragment of an optional conventionalanchoring hook whose inner end (not shown) may be secured inanyf suitable manner 'within the'head 71, and the said hook may have anchored'thereon a flexible or elastic band 76,'only a' fragment of which is shown, and whose lower, part may be anchored to any stationary part within the doll body. It will be understood that manual depression of the lever 59 against the action of the spring 37 will rock or pivot the head in a generally forward direction and that release of'the pressure against said lever.59 will cause the spring 37, to return said lever 59, to upper or outer position and thereupon return and pivot the head to its original normalposition. A similarfl action as that just described is effected with respect to the band or link 49, which permits selective movement of a portion of the head, for example the movable tongue 84, or movable eyes 70, which are only diagram- 'm'atically illustrated in Fig. 10
In Fig. 9 I have illustrated a vertical cross-sectional view showing the mounting of rollers 62 and 63 with broken off portions of the sides of the doll and recessed journalling openings are rovided in the sides of the doll body. In Fig. 11 I illustrate a modified form of connecting means which are independently movable so as to. permit selective and independent movement of the arm and leg on one side from the movement of the other arm and leg, v I
Referring to Fig. 11, reference numeral 73 designates a right hand shaft portion having'one' end suitably anchored in one of the herein described manners in the right arm, and reference numeral 80 designates a similar pin or shaft mounted and anchored in a suitable passag'e of the right leg. The inner ends of the pin or shafts 78 and 80 are preferably reduced as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 11, and said reduced end portions are inserted in interfitting relation in end-opening passages of similar left hand shafts or pins 79 and 81, which are anchored in the left arm and left leg respectively in any suitable manner, such as for example as hereinbefore described. It is to be understood that the said interfitting telescopic relationship between the said arm anchoring pins or shafts 78 and 79 is so that each one thereof is rotatable independently of the other, and similarly shafts or pins 80 and 81 interfit telescopically and are independently rotatable. The said telescoping portions of said shafts or pins may be provided with any suitable means for preventing lengthwise separation thereof, as for example, suitable set screws or studs similar to 82, which are mounted in suitable aperture formed in the shafts or pins 79 and 81, and whose inner ends are adapted to seat and ride in an annular groove formed on the inner end portion of each of the shafts or pins 78 and Sil and one of Which'said grooves is partially shown in Fig. 11 and designated by numeral 83. It is to be further understood that said interfitting arm and leg anchoring pins can be made to'function, respectively, as a one piece anchoring pin by merely tightly setting the above mentioned set screws or studs 82 against the inserted end of opposing pin.
The rotatable roller or'ro'tor 62, illustrated partially in cross-section in Fig. 9, is operatively connected to the right arm and right leg'(shown at the left of Fig. 11) by suitable flexible band or link elements 33b and 33a, which have their oppositeends wound about and suitably fastened or anchored on said shafts or pins 78 and 80.

1- claim:
1. In a doll construction, a doll body; a neck and a head having a pair of eyes movably adapted to move between an open and closed position and mounted in said head, said eyes being secured to a first transversely extending, rotatable shaft 'journalled in said head; a second transversely extending shaft rotatably journalled in said body below first shaft, said second shaft having a portion radially spaced from the rotational axis thereof; a third transversely extending shaft rotatably journalled in said body having a portion radially spaced from the rotational axis thereof, the rotational axis of said third shaft being in alignment with the rotational axis of said second shaft; a pair of flexible bands, one of said-bands having one end connected to a radially spaced portion of said second shaft, and its opposite end opcratively connected to said first shaft on one side of the rotational axis of said first shaft, and the other I of said bands having one end connected to a radially spaced portion of saidthird shaft, and its opposite end operatively connected to said first shaft on the diametrically opposite side of the rotational axis of said first shaft whereby rotation of said second shaft causes said first shaft to rotate in one direction 'and rotation of said third shaft, in thefsame direction as said second shaft, causes said first shaft to rotate in the opposite direction; means for selectively rotating said second and third shafts including a depressible member mounted over 'an opening in said body, a lever connected to each of said second and third shafts, the free ends of said levers extending to points under and adjacent to said depressible member whereby each lever may be selectively actuated by depression of said depressible member to selectively open or close said eyes.

In a doll-construction, a doll body having movable arms and legs connected thereto; transversely extending shaft-like members connecting saidarms and legs together respectively; a cranked portion formed on each shaft-likemember, said cranked portions extending in diametrically opposite directions; an intermediate shaft rotatably mounted in said body having a pair of cranked portions formed thereon extending in diametrically opposite directions; said body having a frontop'ening; a tie pressible member movably mounted in said opening; a lever connected to said intermediate shaft and extending to a point below said depressible member; a pair of flexible bands, each of said'bands having'one end connected to a respective "crank portionon said intermediate shaft and its opposite end connected to a respective cranked portion of 'one'of said shaft-like members whereby depression of said depressible member to actuate said lever causes said arms and legs to move simultaneously.

In a doll constructionsubstantially as set forth in claim 2, in which a spring is mounted in said body, said spring operatively engaging said lever and being adapted to yieldably urge the free end of said levertoward said depressible member; i I I i i '4. In a doll construction, a doll body having movable arms and legs connected thereto; transversely extending shaft-like members connecting said arms and legs together respectively; a cranked portion formed on each shaft-like member, said cranked portions extending in diametrically opposite directions; an intermediate shaft, rotatably mounted in said body having a pair of cranked portions formed thereon extending in diametrically opposite directions; said body having a front opening; a depressible member movably mounted in said opening; a lever connected to said intermediate shaft and extending to a point below said depressible member; a pair of flexible bands, each of said bands having one end con-. nected to a respective crank portion on said intermediate shaft and its opposite end connected to a respective cranked portion of one of said shaft-like members; a neck and head pivotally mounted on said body; a second pair of flexible bands, each of said bands having one end connected to a respective cranked portion of said intermediate shaft and its opposite end connected to said head and neck on a respective opposite side of the pivotal connection thereof to said body whereby depression of said depressible member to actuate said lever causes said arms, legs, and head and neck to move simultaneously.
5. In a doll construction substantially as set forth in claim 4, in which a spring is mounted in said body, said spring operatively engaging said lever and being adapted to yieldably urge the free end of said lever toward said depressible member.

In a doll construction, a doll body having movable arms and legs connected thereto and an integral head and neck pivotally mounted thereon; transversely extending shaft-like members connecting said arms and legs together respectively; a cranked portion formed on each shaft-like member; a shaft rotatably journalled in said body intermediate said shaft-like members, said shaft having a portion spaced radially from the rotational axis thereof; a second shaft rotatably journalled in said body having a portion spaced radially from the rotational axis thereof, the rotational axis of said second shaft being in axial alignment with said rotational axis of said first shaft; a pair of flexible bands, each of said bands having one end connected to a respective radially spaced portion of said shafts and its opposite end connected to a crank portion of a respective shaft-like member; means for selectively rotating said first and second shafts to selectively move said arms or legs including a depressible member mounted over an opening in said body, a lever connected to each of said first and second shafts, the free ends of said levers extending to points under and adjacent to said depressible member whereby each lever may be selectively actuated by depression of said depressible member; a second pair of flexible bands, each of said bands having one end connected to a respective radially spaced portion of said shafts and its opposite end connected to said head and neck on a respective opposite side of the pivotal connection thereof to said body.
7. In a doll construction, substantially as set forth in claim 6 in which spring means are mounted in said body, said spring means operatively engaging said levers and being adapted to yieldably urge the free ends of said levers outwardly toward said depressible member.
