reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of tl|isspecification.

' Thenature of this invention relates to cer tain new and useful improvements in that class of horseshoes in which theheel and toe calks are so constructed as to become self-sharpening by wear; and the invention consists in the peculiarconstruction and arrangement ofparts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a horseshoe, the bodyofwhich is of the ordinary construction.

B represents the toe-calk, which is made of a thin piece of tempered steel re-enforced upon each side by a piece-of wrought-iron welded to the steel, during which action upon each end the said end is forged into a sharp lug,-whichenters the body of the shoe and is welded thereto when the calk is put in place. It will also be understood that the calks are sharpened after they are in place upon the shoe, which can be readily done with a red heat, or a heat which will not interfere with the weld. l

I am aware that the bodies of horseshoes have been made of iron and steel welded together, as described in Patents Nos. 173,517 and 219,630. I am also aware that ordinary calks have been welded to the body of a wrought-metalshoe, as described in Patent No. 14,852. I am also aware that wedge-shaped teeth of steel, the largest ends fitting into a groove in the calk,have been secured by striking the parts together by dies, as described in the Patent No. 246,505, and that a calk having.
