FORCE-PUMP.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,913, dated January 2, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM ALMOND 8101(- FORD, a citizen of the United States of Americu, residing at Brarrtford, in the county of Brant, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Acting Force-Pumps, of which the following is a specificatiomreference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
'Thisinvention relates to thatclass of pumps in which a double-acting piston reciprocates inside of a metal cylinder attached by clamps to a wooden stock; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a pump constructed according to my improvement; Fig. 2, a sectional detail of the top of the stock; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the lower part of the pump. Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the line w 00, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, a detail of one of the valves.
A represents the cylinder, provided with lugs to a, having holes through which ispassed the threaded ends of curved rods or yokes B, provided with nuts I), and passing around the pump-tube (J, by which means thecylinder is securely held to the tube, and as the ports D D pass through conical projections E E on the side of the cylinder, which fit into correspondingrecessesfll, in the pump-tubeflhere are perfectly-tight joints formed at the junction of the cylinder and tube by screwing up the nuts b on the ends of the yokes B. In addition to this, the valve G at each port is made of the form shown in Fig. 5, with the ring 9 fitting against a shoulder, a, on the projection E, and
is brought tight against the bottom of the recess F by the action of the yoke and nut, and thus there is a double security for the tightness of the joints between the cylinder and the tube. The bottom of the cylinder is closed, 4 5 and is provided with an inlet-valve in the ordinary manner; but the head H, at the upper end of the cylinder, has a valve-chamber, I, formed in it, so as to allow the upper inlet-valve,
J, to hang vertical, whereby its own weight 50 assists in closing it, and the valve-chamber I bears against. the pump-tube (1. Instead of the valve-chamber being madein the head, the cylinder'itself may be provided with a valvechamber; but this would not be so convenient, as there would probably be greater difliculty in fitting and attaching the valve. At the upper end of the tube or stock is a cap, K, having a short tapering flange, k, projectingdownward and entering a circular recess in the top of the tube. On the side of this cap is a vertical straight flange, 7a, through which passes the bolts by which the cap K is secured to the tube. At L is astandard formingthe fulcrum of the lever M, which is connected through the pitman N and piston-rod O with piston P. The piston has a circumferential recess, R, in which is placed the packing b. At different points on each side of. the piston are several small apertures, 19, through which the water has access to the circumferential recess, and thus forces out the packing. This recess R has communication through holes 1) with the cylinder upon either side of the piston-head.
By the construction here shown a cheap yet powerful pumpis made, which will not be lia ble to get out of order. The peculiar construction admits of the ready tightening of the joints, and the projections E E serve to prevent any vertical movement of the cylinder under the strain of pumping.
If preferred, the face of the projection E may be made flat, or without the shoulder 0, but it would not be so convenient in fitting the parts together, and the projections E may be made cylindrical instead of conical.
What I claim as new is- '1. The combination, with the cylinder A, having conical projections E, and the whole cast in one piece, of the pump-tube 0, having corresponding recesses, and a fastening device, substantially as described, constructed to clamp the cylinder and tube together, as set forth.
2. The combination of the cylinder A, having lugs a a upon opposite sides, and conical projections E, and the whole cast in one piece, with the pump-tube 0, having corresponding recesses, and the yoke B and nuts I), substantially as described.
3. The cylinder A, having lugs a a and cont 100 cal projections E, the whole castin one piece, the tube 0, having recesses F, and the ring {I of the valve G, confined between the bottom of the recessesF and the projection E, in combination with the yoke B and nuts b, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the cylinder A, of the upwardly-projecting valve -chamber I, formed in one piece with the head H, and having an inlet flap-valve, J, arranged vertically to close by its own weight, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the cylinder A, of the head H, provided with the chamber I and W ILLI A ALMOND BICKFORD.
