6 Claims. (Cl. 160-89) This invention relates to an adjustable guard for use in open or screen covered windows for preventing a child from falling outwardly therethrough and for substantially preventing an unauthorized entry through the W121- dow from the outer side thereof.
More particularly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a guard of extremely simple construction capable of being detachably mounted either in the opening formed by the raising of a lower window sash or which may be detachably mounted on a window screen and disposed over the lower half of a full window screen or substantially over the entire screen covered opening of a half window screen.
Still another and important object of the invention is to provide a guard capable of being readily removed from the inner side of the window so that the guard will not form an obstruction to the use of the window opening as an emergency exit in the case of an emergency such as fire, but the removal of which is relatively more difiicult to accomplish from a position on the outer side of the window.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a guard capable of adjustment to fit window openings or window screens of dififerent sizes.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the window guard applied to a full window screen and looking toward the inner side of the guard and window screen;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the guard taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 2- 2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the guard applied to the lower sash of a window and the window sill;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the upper part of the guard, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the guard, as shown applied in Figure 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, 6 designates generally a window opening containing a full length window screen 7, disposed therein for substantially closing the opening of the window 6 against the passage of insects or the like, as is conventional. The sashes of the window 6 are not shown in order to better illustrate the a plication and use of the guard, designated generallv 8 and comprising the invention.
The guard 8 includes a ring 9 of a diameter somewhat less than the width of the screen covered opening of the window screen 7 and which ring 9 is of sufiicient width radially in order that it may be provided at the top and bottom thereof with series of circumferentially spaced openings 10 which extend transversely therethrough and which openings are so disposed that an opening of each series of openings is in diametrical alignment with an opening of the other series.
A pair of bars 11 and 12 are pivotally connected intermediate of their ends to one another by rivet or other suitable fastening 13. The intermediate, pivotally connected portions of the bars 11 and 12 are reduced in thickness on opposite sides thereof at their pivot points and for distances in either direction therefrom, as seen at 14 and 15, respectively, so that the bars 11 and 12 are disposed in substantially the same plane, as best illustrated in Figure 2, and to permit a limited swinging movement of the bars relatively to one another on their pivot 13. The bars 11 and 12 at equally spaced distances from the pivot 13 are provided with fastenings 16.
With the bars 11 and 12 disposed in cross relationship, substantially as illustrated in Figure 1, said bars are provided with substantially parallel upper ends 17 and substantially parallel lower ends 18, which ends are disposed obliquely to the intermediate portions of the bars 11 and 12. The outer side of an upwardly opening U-shaped member 19 is secured to one side of each of the upper ends 17; said members 19 being attached in any suitable manner as by welding, not shown, so that the outer side of one leg of each member 19 is secured in abutting engagement to a side of an end 17, as illustrated in Figure The U-shaped members 19 are disposed to open upwardly and form channels adapted to receive a bar 20 secured by fastenings 21 to the inner sides of the stiles of the frame of the Window screen 7. The lower ends 18 are provided with openings, not shown, for receiving screw or other suitable fastenings 22 for fastening said ends 18 to the inner side of the bottom rail of the frame of the window screen 7, as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 5. The terminals of the end portions 18 are tapered to form pointed ends 23 which are adapted to be disposed above the bottom edge of the screen 7, when the guard 8 is applied thereto, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 5.
It will thus be readily apparent that the guard 8 may be detachably mounted, as illustrated in Figure l, on the inner side of the window screen 7 so as to sufiiciently cover the lower half of said screen to prevent a child from accidentally falling outwardly therethrough. Likewise, the guard 8 will function effectively to prevent entrance through the frame of the screen 7 from the outer side thereof without the making of sufficient noise to alarm the occupants of an enclosure of which the screen 7 forms a part. However, on the other hand, the guard 8 may be readily torn from the screen 7 from the inner side thereof by the simple expediency of pulling the fastenings 22 out of the frame of the screen in order that the screen frame may be used as an exit opening in case of an emergency such as fire. The bars 11 and 12 may be adjusted by the removal and replacement of the fastenings 16 to their dotted line positions of Figure 1 for accommodating the guard to a narrower window screen than that illustrated or to accommodate it for engagement with a cross bar 20 which is located at greater distance from the bottom rail of the screen than is illustrated in Figure 1. The ring 9 in addition to functioning as a means for adjustably mounting the bars 11 and 12 also combines therewith to cover a suflicient portion of the opening of the bottom half of the window screen 7 so that even a small child could not squeeze through the remaining opening thereof.
The guard 8 may also be utilized as an attachment for a window not provided with a screen, as illustrated in Figure 3. Assuming the guard 8 to be adjusted and assembled as in Figure l, the lower sash 24 of a window is raised and the guard 8 is positioned in the opening 25 thus formed and with the upwardly opening channel members 19 positioned to engage the bottom rail of the sash 24 and with the bars 11 and 12 and the ring 9 in substantially a perpendicular position. The sash 24 is then forced downwardly sulfciently so that the pointed ends 23 will be imbedded in the window sill 26 for detachably mounting the guard 8 in the opening 25 and so that it may function in the same manner and for the same purpose as heretofore described, in reference to its use with the window screen 7.
Various modifications and changes are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a guard for window openings or the like, a pair of bars pivotally connected intermediate of their ends in crossed relationship, said bars having upper ends provided with upwardly opening channel portions adapted to detachably receive a cross bar of a window screen or the bottom rail of a lower sash of a window, said bars having downwardly extending lower ends, driven fastening means for detachably anchoring said lower ends to the bottom rail of a window screen or to the sill of a window frame for detachably mounting the guard in the lower part of the opening of the window screen or in the opening of the window frame formed by the raised lower sash, respectively, and an annular intermediate member forming a part of said guard and having spaced portions detachably connected to spaced portions of each of said bars on both sides of the pivot thereof and combining with said bars in forming a closure for the opening in which the guard is mounted.
2. A guard as in claim 1, and said bars being adjustably connected to said annular member for positioning the bars at various angles with respect to one another.
3. In a guard for window openings or the like, a pair of bars pivotally connected intermediate of their ends in crossed relationship, said bars having upper ends, provided with upwardly opening channel portions adapted to detachably receive a cross bar of a window screen or the bottom rail of a lower sash of a window, said bars having downwardly extending lower ends, driven fastening means for detachably anchoring said lower ends to the bottom rail of a window screen or to the sill of a window frame for detachably mounting the guard in the lower part of the opening of the window screen or in the opening of the window frame formed by the raised lower sash, respectively, a ring member across which the bars extend, and fastening means for detachably and adjustably tconnecting spaced portions of the bars to said ring mem er.
4. A guard as in claim 3, said bars at their pivots and for distances on either side thereof being recessed on opposite sides for positioning said bars in substantially the same plane when pivotally connected.
5. A guard as in claim 3, the lower ends of said bars terminating in pointed terminals comprising said driven fastening means and adapted to be imbedded in the window sill for detachably securing the lower end of the guard to the window frame when the upper end thereof is in engagement with the bottom rail of the raised lower sash of the window.
6. -In a guard for window openings or the like, a pair of bars pivotally connected intermediate of their ends in crossed relationship, said bars having upper ends provided with means adapted to detachably interfit with a cross bar of a window screen or the bottom rail of a lower sash of a window, said bars having downwardly extending lower ends, driven fastening means for detachably anchoring said lower ends to the bottom rail of a window screen or to the sill of a window frame for detachably mounting the guard in the lower part of the opening of the window screen or in the opening of the window frame formed by the raised lower sash, respectively, a ring member across which the bars extend, and fastening means for detachably and adjustably connecting spaced portions of the bars to said ring member.
