Substituted for abandoned application Serial No. 324,581,
March 18, 1940. This application June 25, 1952, Serial No. 295,416
4 Claims. (Cl. 2270) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a towel suit. This is a substitute for my previous application filed on March 18, 1940, Serial Number 324,581, abandoned February 2, 1942.
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a towel suit of terry cloth or other suitable toweling material which is adapted to completely enclose ones body, with the exception of the face, for drying and protecting the body after a bath, by children or adults or as a lounging towel suit for the beach or at home.
Another object of the invention is to provide an opening extending the length of the body portion thereof, for the purpose of permitting the suit to be engaged upon ones body and to provide a means for closing this opening to hold the suit in position thereon.
Still further the invention proposes the construction of tubular members for enclosing the arms, hands, legs and feet, and to provide these tubular portions with slits in the vicinity of the hand and foot portions through which these members may project.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means for holding the openings in their closed positions in such a manner that when the said means is moved to the open position it will act as cuffs.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a person wearing a towel suit constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed view of one of the arm or leg bottoms.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a rear elevational view of Fig. l.
The towel suit, according to this invention, comprlses terry cloth or any other suitable material in the form of a suit 10, consisting of a body portion having anopen front side 11, combination arm and hand portions 10 for enclosing ones arms and hands, and combination leg and foot portions 10 for enclosing ones legs and feet, and a hood portion 10 for enclosing ones head with the exception of the face. Slide fasteners 12 are arranged upon the material at the sides of the opening 11 and a slide member 13 is adapted to control the fasteners 12 for opening and closing the opening 11 to completely encase ones body within the suit 10 after a bath, for drying and protecting the body.
The combination arm and hand portions for enclos ng ones arms and hands comprises a tubular portion hav ng an outer end 10 closed to form a mitten. An opening 14 is arranged in the vicinity of the mitten formed by the closed end 10 and a means is provided for holding closed this opening 14. This means comprises a plurality of elastic straps 15 connected to the material at one side of the opening 14 by means of a pivot 16. The other end of the elastic straps 15 are provided with snap fastener elements 17 which are adapted to engage complementary snap fastener elements 18 on the material upon the opposite side of the opening 14 for holding these 2,697,837 Patented Dec. 28, 1954 end of the combination arm and hand portion 10 it is merely necessary to pass the hand through that portion ofthe opening 14 which is between the elastic straps 15 and urge the mitten portion 10 of the combination hand and arm portion to a position in which it will be in back of the combination arm and hand portion 10 Whenthis mitten portion is in its back position the straps 15 will rotate on the pivot 16 so that one will en gage aroundone side of the arm and the other engage around the other side of the arm in order to form the bottom edge of the combination arm and hand portion into a cuff which will resiliently engage around ones wrist to prevent the combination arm and hand portion 10 from moving upwards on the arm.
A means is provided for holding the end portion 10 in its open position and consists of a snap fastener element 19 fixedly attached to a portion of the mitten 10 and which is adapted to engage a complementary snap fastener element 20 mounted on the sleeve above the snap fastener element 19 for holding this end in its open position. The slit 14 only extends through one half of the tubular arm portion and the remaining portion which is not provided with the slit is adapted to act as a hinge for permitting the mitten portion lii to move to its open position.
The combination leg and foot portion for enclosing ones legs and feet comprises a tubular leg portion having its outer end closed forming a foot covering portion 10 This tubular portion is provided. with an opening 21' in the vicinity of the foot covering portion 10 through which ones feet may be extended. A means is provided for holding this opening 211 in its closed position.
This means comprises a. plurality of straps 22 which are attached to the material of the combination leg and foot portion 10 above the opening 21 by means of. a pivot 23. The other ends of the elastic straps 22 are provided with snap fastener elements 24 which are adapted to engage complementary snap fastener elements 25 on the material of the foot covering portion 10 for holding the opening 21 in itsclosed position. When it is desired to have ones feet-project front the combination leg and foot portions 10 it is merely necessary to pass the foot through that portion of the opening 21 which is between the elastic straps 22 so that the foot covering portion 10 will be pivoted to the back of the leg.
A means is provided for holding this foot covering portion 10 in its open position and consists of a snap fastener element 26 attached to a portion of the foot covering portion 10 which is adapted to engage a complementary snap fastener element 27 attached to a portion of the combination leg and foot portion 10 for holding the foot covering portion 10 in its open position.
The body portion 10 is provided with a neck opening 29 and the hood portion 10 is formed integral with the back edge of the neck opening 29 and is adapted to cover ones head with the exception of the face. This hood 10 is also formed of terry cloth or any other suitable toweling material, and is capable of being removed from the head when so desired. To do this it is merely necessary to remove the hood portion 10 from the head permitting it to fall back, and lay adjacent the back portion of the body portion 10.
Suitable pockets 30 and 31 are provided at the front of the garment. The rear of the suit 10 is preferably formed with a drop seat 32 which may be held in position by snap fasteners 33. In place of the snap fasteners, buttons, tie strings or any other means may be used for keeping the seat portion closed.
It is to be understood that the towel suit may be of any suitable size for adults and children and may also be ornamented with suitable trimmings. This suit can be readily donned and used as a bathrobe or it may be used as a protective sleeping robe, hospital garment or as an examination garment in a doctors oflice. The suit may be used with the hood at the beach to cover the bathing suit and to protect the body and head from excessive sunburn, also to protect the wearer from catching cold.
