UNrTnD STATES PATENT einen.
ARNQNT CANNON, JR., OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
SAFETY APPLlANCE FOR LIFTS, ELEVATORS, AND DUll/lB-WAITERS.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,775, dated December 26, 1882. Application filed September 26, 188:2. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, ARNONT CANNON, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Safety Appliance for Lifts, Elevators, and Dumb-waiters, oi' which the following is a speciliuat-ion.
My invention consists ofa safety attachment to be applied to dumb-waiters, lit'ts, or elevators that are provided with a balance-weight, so constructed as to prevent the car from falling when the sustaining or main rope breaks. Iattain this ohjectby themechanismillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a. perspective View of the safetyappliancc. Fig. 2 is a top view of the pulley over which the safety-rope passes. Fig. 3 is a side view ofthe safety-pulley.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My method of construction consists in attaching to the lnost convenient place in the top ot' the car au additional rope, B, passing it up to and over either one or more pulleys, EE, whose hearings K are supported by springs or rubber L, and thence down to and connecting securely with the balance-Weight H. This rope is allowed a little slack, and is provided with a light weight, G, attached to the rope B a little above the weight H, sufficiently heavy to keep the slack in operation between it and the weight H. The pulleys E E are made with V-shaped grooves, and the rope B does no duty, and is of no use until the main sustaining-rope breaks, in which case the whole weight of the car and contents and the balance-weight comes upon the additional rope, which presses down the pulley orpulleys so that the rim or rims ot' the pulleys are rmly set in the bottom of the frame ofthe pulley or pulleys 4E E, and the pulley cannot move. The lower part of the frame of the pulley, as shown at M, presents a concave surface to the pulley of about same radius as .the pulley. The bearings of the axles of the pulleys shown at K rest upon the springs L, are sustained in place by vertical interacting tongue and groove between them andthe frame of the pulleys, and When the main sustaining-rope breaks the cnr descends only enough to take up the slack, when the safety-rope takes the weight, sets the pulleys against their frame, and, being pressed into the V-groove, holds the car firmly.l I use one or more pulleys like E, as convenience 0i' space in construction may indicate.
Havingthus described my invention andthe construction and utility thereof, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The safety-rope B, one or two pulleys supported by springs, and the light weight G on the rope, in combination with the car and balance-weight, substantially as set forth, and for the purposes indicated.
