SQECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,751, dated December 26, 1852,

T 0 all whom it may concern:
"Be it known that I, MATTHEW WARD, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Nozzle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved fire-hose nozzle, which can be adjusted to deliver the water as a single jet, as spray, forward and sidewise, or all at the same time, and can also be used to signal to the engineer.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved nozzle. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig.3 is a sectional plan view of the slotted sleeve for closing the side spray-slots. Fig. 4: is a plan view of the ring for holding the lower spray-sleeve in place. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional elevation of the screw-cap for closing the end of the nozzle. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the nozzle, showing the manner in which the jets and streams issue from the same.
A tube, A, which is preferably made tapering, is provided with a series of longitudinal openings or slots, B, and is surrounded by a sleeve, 0, which fits closely on the tube A, but is adapted to turn on the same. The sleeve 0 is held in place to prevent longitudinal movement by a ring, F, surrounding the tube above.

Above the ring F the tube A is provided with a series of longitudinal slots, K, and at that part is surrounded by a sleeve, L, provided with a series of longitudinal slots, M, of the same size as the slots K. ()n the upper end of the tube A the nozzle G is screwed, which holds the sleeve L in place. The nozzle G is provided with a plug, H, which can be turned by means ot'a H, as shown in Fig. 1, so that it will not be.
misplaced or lost. It the nozzle G is unscrewed from the tube A, a cap, 1 can be screwed on the upper end of the tube A to close the same.
The operation is as follows: If the plug H is open, and the tube A and sleeves C and L are so adjusted that the slots in the same do not coincide, all the water will pass through the nozzle G and will be delivered in a single stream or jet. It the tube A and the sleeve 0 are so turned or adjusted that the slots in the same coincide, some of the water will be delivered as spray or sinall jets through the tubular projections D, and part or the water will be delivered through the nozzle G as a single stream or jet, and it the sleeve L is so adjusted that the slots coincide with the slots K part of the water will also issue from the tube A through the slots K and M laterally, as shown in Fig. 6. If the plug H is closed, and the slots of the tube A and the sleeves L and C coincide, all the water will be delivered as spray or fine jets through the tubular projection 1) and the slots KM. In this manner the nozzle can be adjusted by the fireman to deliver the water just as he thinks proper. If
the plug H is open and the sleeves C and L are so adjusted that the slots of the tube A and sleeves L and Oonly partlycoincide-that is, if very narrow openings are formed-the water will be delivered as a single stream and a very fine spray, which keeps the smoke from the fireman and permits him to approach very close to the fire. By turning the sleeves but slightly the nozzle can be adjusted to deliver a very large quantity of water both through the main and side openings. 1
Another advantage of my improved nozzle is that it can be used for signaling to the engineer. If the nozzle is suddenly adjusted to deliver a large quantity of water, the pressure at the engine immediately decreases, and, vice versa, ii' the water is partially or entirely shut ofi" at the nozzle thepressure rises correspondingly at the engine, and the indications or pressure is shown at the pressure-gage. A signal code can be established by means of which the fireman can signal his wishes to the engineer, &c., by varying the pressure, which is accomplished by successively adjusting the nozzle to deliver more or less water. It' the cap 0 is screwed on the nozzle G, but a very small stream will issue from the end of the nozz e, and more water will issue from the side openings. 1f the cap Pis screwed on thetube A in place of the nozzle G, all the water must pass through the side openings and pass through the slots L M and the tubes D simultaneously; ortliey can be so adjusted that the water passes out of the tubes D, or out of the slots L M only.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a nozzle,thecombination,withan apertured tube, of a sleeve provided with tubular side projections,substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. Inanozzle,the combination, with an apertured tube, of a sleeve provided with tubular side projections and a sleeve provided with slots, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the tube A, provided with slots B and K,of the sleeve (3, provided with tubular proictions D, the sleeve L, provided with slots M, and the nozzle G, screwed on the tube A,substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the tube A, provided with slots B and K, of the sleeve 0, provided with tubes D, the sleeve L, provided with slots M, and of the ring, F, substan ially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. In anozzle, the combination,with thetube A, provided with slots B, of the sleeve C,provided with tubular projections D,and the plug H, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
