UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD` K. TOLMAN, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
KEY-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,744, dated'December 26, 1882.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD K. TOLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a' new and useful Improvement in Lock- Escuteheons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a loek-escutcheon by which the key may be held and securely fastened in the lock, and also by which tire key-hole may be closed when the keyis not in the lock, also, to a inode of preventing the escntcheon from being operated from the opposite or under side by a knife or sharp-pointed instrument; and my invention is fully set forth in the following specitication and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a lock with my escuteheon attached, Fig. 2, an enlarged view of the eseuteheon; Fig. 3, a front view ot' the saine, showing the mode of'operation. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line x m, and Fig. 5 a sectional view on line s s.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
My escutcheon consists of two plates of circular orolher suitable form, the plate A' being fastened by screws to the door, and having a key-hole, 1 and a curved slot, G, shown by the broken lines in Figs. l, 2, and 3. The Second plate, A,is pivoted at B to plate A', and has a key-hole, O, and a straight slot, E, opening out of the key-hole O, a stud, F', passing through the slot G, by which the swinging niotion ot' the plate A is limited, and a knob or handle, F, by which the plate may be moved, as shown in Fig.3, so that the key-holesin the two plates will correspond. The key is then inserted. and turned, throwing the bolt until the handle of the Akey stands as shown at- I in Fig. l, when the, plateA is moved back to correspond with plate A', with the key inclosed in and held from turning by the slot E. As 'the screw H' in the pl-ate A' is covered by the plate A, I make a hole, H, in plate A. so it will'uncover the screw when the plate Ais moved to the position shown in Fig. 3, and afford access to the screw. A would have to be removable.
When the two plates coincide as in Figs. l, 2, holding the key in the slot E, it would be possible to enter a knife or pointed instrument through the opposite key-hole, and by pressing the point into the under surface ofA to move it back, as shown in Fig. 3, causing Otherwise the plate the key-holes to correspond, when the key may be turned or pushed out. In order to prevent this I form notchesffat the inner end and on the sides of the curved slot E, and also form two wings on the opposite sides of the stud or pin F', so they coincide with the notchesff when the key is locked in; and any pressure against the under side of the plate A will push the plate away from the plate A', the pivoted joint at B being made loose enough for that purpose, thereby drawing the wing on the end of the stud F' into the notchesff, a slight resistance at that point e'ectually preventing 'the plate from being moved in the manner indicated.
It will readily be seen that when the escutchcon is applied directly to the body ofthe lock, the plate L may form the lower or plate A' by making a slot, G, having notchesff.
B v using a plate, A, having a key-hole, C, arranged as described, I ain able to form the two plates A and A' of the saine shape and size, so that their outlines will concide when the key is lot-ked in, thereby presentinga neat and sightly appearance. l
What I claim as myinvention, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Alock-escutcheonconsistingoftwo plates, A and A', pivoted together at B, the plate A' having a slot, G, curved concentrically with the pivot B and a key-hole, i), and the plate A, having akeyhole, C, straight slot E, and stud F, sliding in the slot-G, as described, and tor the purpose set forth.
2.A lock escntcheon consisting of two plates, A and A', pivoted together loosely at B, so as to allow the plates to be separated slightly at the side opposite the pivot, the plate A' having a key-hole, D, and slot G curved concentrically with the pivot B, said slot having at one end the notchesff, and the plate A having a key-hole, O, straigot slot E, and a stud, F, entering the 'curved slot G, said stud having wings titting the notchesff, and arranged as shown and described, whereby,\vl1en the key is held by and in the slot E, 'pressure against the under side ot' the plate A will cause the wings to be drawn into the notchesfj', securely locking the two plates A' and A together as long as the pressure is applied, as and for the purpose set forth.
EDWARD K. TOLMAN.
