Description

(ModeL) J. SENN.
LEAD PENCIL'.
Patented Dec. 26, 1882-.
N %WN INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTOENYS.
UNITED STATES PATENTV OFFICE;
JACQUES SENN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEAD-PENCIL.
SPECIFICATION formn g part of Letters Patent N o. 269,'724, dated December 26, 1889.
Application filed March 1,1832. Moda) To all whom t may oonow: i
Be it known that I, JACQUES SENN, of the city, County, andfitate of New York, have invented a new and improved Lead-Pencil, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the class ot' lead-pencilsin .which the lead is clamped in any desired 'position hy means ot' a spring-actuated clamp.
Reference is to he had to the accompaying drawings,formiug part ot' this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in all the figures.
Figure lis a longitudial section of my improved pencil; and Fig. 2 is a detail View ot' the clamping device, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line x x in Fg. 1.
My inventio is emhodied in a guide'for the pencil-lead, made of a single piece ot' metal doubled upon itself, forning a split tube for the lead, with lateral double wings extending along a portion of the length ot' the tube, a springclainping-lever being pivoted between the wings upon one side ot' the tube, the whole being combined with a tube or casing forming an abutnent for the spring of the lever and inclosin the working parts.
A plate ot' steel or other suitable material is cut and stamped orpressed n the usual and well known way, so as to form the two sides a b of the tube A and the two double wings B G. The wigB bears againsttheinner surface of the casing D, and acts simply as a support Iorthvtu heA,and the two parts of the wing U act as supports for the opposite side ot' the tube and receive the pivot d of the clampinglerer E. The clamping-!ever E is ser-rated on the inner face ot' its shorterlower arm, and the extremity of this arm is made thin and bent back over the outer surface ot' the lever, forming a spring', e, which bears against the inner surface ot' the casing D, and forces the serrated face of the lever E into contact With the lead e, contained in`the tube A, and at the same time retains the tube within the casing. There is an opening in the side ot' the tube A to admitthese-rated end of theleverE for this purpose. The upper and longer arin of the Iever E is provided with a rounded fingerpiece,f which projects through ap opening in the casing D, so that it can be conveniently p'essed by the finger or thumb when it is desired to move the serrated portion of thelever for the purpose of adjusting the lead in the pencil. The casing D n the present instance is provided with a hollow wooden handle, F, capahle of receiving the portion of the lead extending above the upper end of the tube A; bht the invention is not contined to this constructio, as the casing D may be extended to form a handle.
Having th us descrihed myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In alead-pencil, the tube A, having wings B C, and the serrated 'sp ing-lover E, in combination with the casing D, as hvreinspecified.
2. In a lead-pencil, the combination with the tube A and the cas'ing D, ot't-he clamping-lever E, provided with the spring c, made integral therewith, and bent back over the onter surface ot'the same, suhst antally as herein shown and .lescribed, wherebythe said spring serves the double purpose ot' t'orcing the leveragainst the lead and retaining the tube in the casing, as set forth. i
3. In a lead-pencil, the con bination, with the casing D, of the tube A, formed from a single sheet of metal, and provided with the double wings B U and the clamping-!ever E, pivoted between the two parts of the wing O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
