STEAM-INSPIRATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of `Letters Patent No. 269,718, dated December 26, 1882.
Application filed November 2. 18H2.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ROOK, a citizen ofthe United States, resident at Jonesborough, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Steam-Inspirators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specitcation, and to the letters and figures ot' reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a side view of my steam-inspirator. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view ofthe same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the part A.
This invention has relation to injectors for steam-boilers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement ofa two-way steamchest, the double-nozzle casting, and transverse connecting pipe or way, the connected overflow-valve and steam-valve, and the generalcombination, with these-parts, of pipes and valves, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a two-way steam-chest, in the division-wall a of which is formed avalve-seat, b, to receive a valve, c, whereof the stem d is threaded and worksiu a threaded plug, c. The stem d is provided with a crank-arm, a'. The ends of the steam-chest are cylindrical inform, and are designed to receive the upwardly-projecting cylinder ends b of the steam-caps B. Each cap B is formed with an exterior shoulder, c', at the base of the cylinder .end b', a wrench-seat, d', a connecting-thread, c', and a chamber-wall, f, which is designed to project within the chamber of the nozzle-casting.
In the steam-cap is provided a small aperture, y, which is axially arranged with reference to the cylinder end b', and in said cylinder end is formed alateral opening, g', whereby communication is established with the steam-chest. The steam-capsconnect thesteamchest to the double-nozzle casting G, which is cored out toform two nozzle-cham bers, D and D', t-wo water-chambers, l1l and h', below the same, respectively, and the nozzles k and k extending into the chambers D and D toward thejet-openings g ofthe steam-caps. In this construction, when 'the steam-caps are connected to the casting the nozzles k and lo project within the surround ing wallsf, which project from the steam-caps within the chambers D and D. An opening, l, is made in the side wall of the chamber D, and a pipe, F, from the well or reservoir of water is here connected to said chamber D.
G represents the steampipe, leading from the boiler to the steam-chest A. This pipe G is provided with a throttle-valve, in.
H represents an overtlow or waste spout, which is connected to the first branch ot' the double-nozzle casting, and is provided with a turning-valve, p, to which is connected an operating-lever, K, to which is pivoted the lower end of acounccting-rod, R, the upper end of which is pivoted to the crank-arm c of the stem of the steam-valve c. Thepivot or Wrist piu of the crank-arm passes through a slot, s, of the connecting-rod, which is of sufficient length to allow the valvep to move or turn a short distance-about three eigh ths of an in ch in the usual constructions-before the steamvalve commences to move.
To the second branch of the nozzle casting is connected aunioi1-pipe,L, which is connectedto the water-pipe I, leading to the boiler. The
union-pipe Il is provided with a water-cock, t, and a check-valve, c, as shown in the drawings. Vhen the upwardly-projecting ends of the steam-caps are in engagement with the cylindrical ends of the steam-chest the closed nuts N are applied t0 the threaded ends ot' said steam-caps and turned to secure thecaps rmly to the steam-chest.
In order to start the injector, the throttlevalve m being closed, open the overilow-valve p by means of its lever K, which, being connected to the crank-arm a', will closethe steamvalve c, shutting oli' the steam from the second branch of the injector, but leaving the way open to the first branch. Now open the steam throttle-valve m, and the steam will pass through the steam-chest, as indicated by the darts 'on the lett-hand side, and through the jet-aperture g in the steam-cap on this side, through the nozzle k, forming a vacuum in the cham bers surrounding said nozzle and in the IOL) adjoining Water-pipe F, so that the water ows I'rom the well or reservoir through the nozzle condensing the steam and escaping at, the overiiow H. Olose the overow by moving the valve-lever K upward. This movement of the lever opens the-steam-valve e, and the steam admitted to the right-hand passage of the steam-chest'passes forcibly through the jetaperture g in the steam-cap on this side into the nozzle-chamber D', where it meets the water which is conducted into said chamber from the lower portion of the first branch by the transverse pipe or Way F. By means of the steam-jet the water is moved forcibly through the nozzle kf, and the steam being,lr condensed, it escapes through the Water-cock t. rIbis cock is now closed by means ot' its handle, and the water passes through check-valve t* to the boiler. The nozzles being cast in the chambers of' the body or main casting, are secure and tiim in position, and cannot leak.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the double-nozzle I casting and a two-way steam-chest vhaving a i valve, of the steam-injector caps having upwardly-proiect-ing ends passing through cylindrical ends ofthe steam-chest, and closed nuts securing the same in position, substantially as specified.
2. An injector having a two-way steamchest and steamvalve therein, a double-nozzle casting and steam-jet caps connected thereto, a transverse connecting-way and overowvalve, and a lever secured to Said overflowvalve and connectedbto the crankarm of said steam-valve, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the double-nozzle casting O, and its transverse Way E, and the two-way steamehest A, and its valve c, ofthe steam-caps B, having the jets g, the overtlow H, its valve p, valve-lever K, and connectingrod R, the union L, and water-cock t, substantially as specified.
