United States Patent The present invention relates to improvements in a drill accessory for portable electric drills. When such drills are used for drilling in a horizontal or an upward direction, the effort of forcing the drill bit against the work is very tiring. The effort increases with the size of drill bit used. When drilling holes in structural members such L as angle irons, channels and the like with drill bits of one-half inch diameter and larger, the major work involved lies in forcing the bit against the work. Furthermore, it becomes more diflicult to keep the tool properly directed as it becomes necessary to exert more force to keep the bit feeding into the work.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide an accessory tool for application to a portable drill which will enable the operator to use the work to be drilled as a means to anchor the drill accessory and then by pull on a hand lever of the accessory, force the drill bit against the work with very little manual elfort, using one hand only to actuate the hand lever.
More specifically it is the purpose of my invention to provide a drill accessory for forcing the drill bits of portable drills against the work which embodies a work engaging hook, an extensible stem, a mounting bar for slidably engaging a part of the drill such as a side handle and carrying the stem, a link pivoting on the drill part and a hand lever connecting the link and the bar to force the drill toward the work.
The nature and advantage of my invention will appear more fully from the following description and the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred form of the invention. it is obvious that various modifications may be made from the exact'structural details shown and the drawings and description are not intended to limit the invention except insofar as it is limited by the claims.

Figure 3 is a view of the accessory looking in the opposite direction to Figure 2 and showing the side handle of the drill in section, the parts being moved to the opposite extreme position from that shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5--5 of Figure l with the hand lever moved to the mid position, the parts being enlarged.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, my improved drill accessory provides a simple mechanism which can be applied to the side handle or other lateral projection of a portable electric drill 11 which is shown as provided with a control handle 12 with a switch lever 13. Power for operating the drill is received through an electric cord indicated at 14. The drill chuck is shown at 15 as holding a drill 16 for drilling holes in an angle iron 17.
My accessory comprises a stem 18 having a hook 1.9 for engaging the work. This stem is made extensible by threading it into a block 20 which is secured to a mounting bar 21. The mounting bar 21 has a downturned flange 22 through which the stem 18 extends so as to align the bar 21 and the stem 18. The bar 21 has an elongated slot 23 at the end opposite the flange 22. This slot is adapted to fit over the side handle 10 so as to slidably mount the bar 21 with respect to the drill.
A hand lever 24 is pivoted to the block 20 on a reduced shoulder 25 of the block. This hand lever 24 has "ice a link 26 pivoted to it by a pivot pin 27. The link 26 has guide members '28 thereon which slidably secure it 'on'the bar 21. The'link 26 also has an aperture 29'to receive the side handle 19 of the drill. The aperture 29 and the slot 23 neednot' fit the handle 10 closely. They may be large enough'to fit different sizes of side handles. For drills which are notequipped' with side handles any suitable side projection such as a length of tubing may be mounted at the side of the drill to receive the bar 21 and the link 26. The guide members 28 are shown as formed of portions of the link 26 and they fit loosely on the bar 21 so as to 'allow'for the slight rocking movementof the iink'26with respect to the bar 21 as the parts move from the'position shown in Figure 2 to that shown in"Figure '3. Any other suitable guide means may be used 'to'g'uide the link 26 lengthwise of the bar 21.
In some cases the work is of such shape that the hook 19 cannot engage behind it sufliciently well to serve its purpose. In such cases the accessory can be attached to the work by utilizing two hooks 3t) and 31, that are provided on the front portion of the bar 21, to secure a chain 32 that is passed around some part of the work to be drilled.
The use of the drill accessory for forcing the drill against the work is very simple. The stem 18 on the chain 32 is so adjusted that when the bar 21 and the link 26 are fitted over the side handle 10 with the side handle moved as far as it will go away from the work, the drill 16 will clear the work easily. The operator can then force the drill against the work by simply pulling the hand lever 24 toward him. This pull will cause the link 26 to move toward the work pulling the drill 11 with it so that the operator has the other hand free to control the drill and does not have to push on the drill to cause the drill to penetrate the work.
It is believed that the nature and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the foregoing description.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A drill accessory adapted to be applied to a portable drill having a side handle, for forcing the drill bit against the work, said accessory comprising a mounting bar, means extended from one end of the bar to hook around the work and limit movement of the bar away from the work, said bar having means adjacent to the other end thereof for slidably receiving the drill side handle for movement endwise of the bar, a link having means at one end for pivotally receiving the drill side handle, and a hand lever pivoted to the bar, the other end of the link being pivoted to the hand lever at a point spaced from the pivotal connection of the hand lever to the bar.
2. A drill accessory adapted to be applied to a portable drill having a side handle, for forcing the drill bit against the work, said accessory comprising a stem having a work engaging hook at one end, a mounting bar to which the stem is extensibly secured, said bar having means for slidably receiving the drill side handle for movement endwise of the bar, a link, guide means slidably and rockably connecting the link to the mounting bar, said link having means at one end for pivotally receiving the drill side handle, and a hand lever pivoted to the bar, the link being pivoted to the hand lever at a point spaced from the pivoted connection of the hand lever to the bar.
3. A drill accessory adapted to be applied to a portable drill having a side handle, for forcing the drill bit against the work, said accessory comprising a stem having a work engaging hook at one end, a mounting bar to which the stem is extensibly secured, the mounting bar having a block clamped thereto and the stem being threaded through the block, a stem guide on one end of the bar spaced from the block, said bar having a slot at its other end for slidably receiving the drill side handle for movement endwise of the bar, a link having an aperture at one end for pivotally receiving the drill side handle, and a hand lever pivoted to the bar, the link being pivoted to the hand lever at a point spaced from the pivotal connection of the hand lever to the bar.

A drill accessory adapted to be applied to a portable drill having a side handle, for forcing the drill bit against the work, said accessory comprising a stern having a work engaging hook at one end, a mounting bar to which the stem is extensibly secured, the mounting bar having a i a 3 block clamped thereto and the stern being threaded through the block, a stern guide on one end of the bar spaced from the block, said bar having a slot at its other end for slidably receiving the drill side handle for movement endwise of the bar, a link having an aperture at one end for pivotally receiving the drill side handle, and a hand lever pivoted to the bar, the link being pivoted to the hand lever at a point spaced from the pivotal connection of the hand lever to the bar, and the link and the bar having cooperating guide means thereon adjacent to the drill side handle receiving portions slidably connecting the link and bar.
5. A drill accessory adapted to be applied to a portable drill having a side handle, for forcing the drill bit against the work, said accessory comprising a stem having a work engaging hook at one end, a mounting bar to which the stem is extensibly secured, the mounting bar having a block clamped thereto and the stem being threaded through the block, a stem guide on one end of the bar spaced from the block, said bar having a slot at its other end for slidably receiving the drill side handle for move ment endwise of the bar, a' link having an aperture at one end for pivotally receiving the drill side handle, said link having guide members at said end extending over the side edges of the mounting bar whereby to keep the drill side handle slot and the aperture in the link in alignment, and a hand lever pivoted to the bar, the link being pivoted to the hand lever at a point spaced from the pivotal con nection of the hand lever to the bar.
