N. PARENT.
ADJUSTABLE HANGER FOR SHAFTING.
No. 269,537. Patented Dec. 26, 1882.
connected therewith may Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
NICHOLAS PARENT, OF CORNVALL, CONNECTICUT.
ADJUSTABLE HANGER FOR SHAFTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 269,537, dated December 26, 1882. Application filed November 3, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS PARENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at (Jornwall, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Adjustable Hangers for Shafting; and I do hereby declare that the following is a t'ull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and t theletters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 ofthe drawings is a perspective view; and Fig. 2, a side elevation, partly in section, of my invention.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin shaft-hangers; and the object thereof is to produce such a dcvicethat may be readily attached to a post, ceiling, wall, or other support by which the shafting be adjustably hung in either a horizontal, vertical, or oblique position, and readily changed from one such position to another, while at the same time, by themeans hereinafterdescribed, the said shafting will always be kept in line without binding. The objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, A represents a suitable base, that may be securely attached to a post, wall, ceiling, or other place by suitable bolts cr screws passing through the holes a therein. Projecting from this base A, and forming part of the same, are arms B, uniting in the form of a V with a sleeve or socket,U,a-t their point of union. in this sleeve or socket 0 works the cylindrical shank b of the hanger D, saidshank being tapped to admit of the screwthreaded end ofa rod, E, engaging therewith for the purpose of actuating said hanger in a direction to or from this sleeve or socket. This screw-rod E has a collar, 0, resting against a shoulder, d, in the sleeve or socket U, which effectually prevents it from falling or being drawn out when the hanger is removed, and
is operated by a hand-wheel, F.
The hanger D is composed ofa web, a, cast with the cylindrical shank b, said web terminating in sockets f g. A hearing, G, formed with jam-nuts 7;.
ing or turning after having passes through and engages with a screw-' threaded hole in socket jl The lower section of the bearing G is cast with a shankm, which passes into the socket a screw, m, engaging with screw-threads in the socket serving, like the screw it, to hold the sections of the bearing in position after centering them, a set-screw, 1',
lower section of the holding stationary the bearing, both the screws h at being provided A set-screw, l, enters the socket G and abuts against the cylindrical shank b of the hanger to preventitl'rom twistbecn adjusted to the shafting by means of the screw-rod E, engaging therewith.
It will be seen that this hanger may be readily and truly adjusted and centered with the shafting by means of the screw-rod E and screws h m, and when such adjustment and centering have been accomplished will be firmly held in any desired horizontal, vertical, or oblique position, while by having the screw-rod operated by a hand-wheel the adjustment or the hanger in adirection to or from the socket of the base is more quickly and accurately performed than by the means heretofore employed.
Having now-fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The base or frame of a hanger, having socket G, and screw-rod E, and set-screw Z, in combination with the hanger D, cast with screwthreaded socketsfg, and shank b, fitting within ,the socket 0, said shank being tapped to admit of the screw-threaded-end of the rod E engaging therewith, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
NICHOLAS PARENT.
