THOMAS B. HOlVE, OF SGRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
JOURNAL-LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,524, dated December 26, 1882,-
' Application filed October 14, 1882. (No model.)
' Be it known that I, THOMAsB. HOWE, of Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators for Journals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 isa perspective view ofmy improved lubricatingdevice detached. Fig. 2 is a view showing the same arranged in a car-axle box for the lubrication of the journal of the earaxle.. Fig. 3 is a view of a modified form of roller.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same parts.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved journal lubricating device applicabe to the journals of car-axles, shafting, and elsewhere generally, and which shall be adapted to supply a constant, uniform, and sufficient quantity ofoil or other lubricating material to the journal whenever the latter is revolved.
To this end my invention consists in the lubricator constructed and adapted for operation substantially asIwill now proceed to describe, and point out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings I have shown the application of my invention to the lubrication of the journal of a car-axle, though it is evident that it can be applied elsewhere with equal effect.
A represents the car axle; B, the journal thereof; 0, the car-axle box; D. the bearing for the journal, and E the slide above the bearing.
F represents the removable base-piece, constituting the main frame of the lubricator. Se-
cured to or formed upon this base piece are standards G G, on the upper portions of which are i'ulcrumed the arms I), h of a bifurcated lever, H. v
Suspended from the extremities of the arms h h of the lever by lugs or trunnions it, located centrally of it, is a frame or carrier, I, preferably ot'quadrangula-r form, andjournaled in this frame or carrier, so as to rotate freely therein, is a roller, K, which may be covered with a suitable absorbent materialsuch, forinstance,
as cotton waste or wicking-and having its axis parallel, or nearly so, with the axis of the oar-axle.
Theouterextremityof'theleverHis weighted, as shown at 00, and operates to hold the roller K constantly against the journal B of the axle. The oil or other lubricatingmaterial is filled into the axle-box to about the height indicated by the dotted line M, so that the roller is partially submerged in it. Vhen the journal revolves the roller, being in close contact With it, also revolves and transfers oil to the hearing in an even, constant, and efficient manner. as will be readily understood. hanging the roller in the frame or carrier I, and the connection of the latter with the pivoted yielding lever H, forms ajointed connection, which permits the roller to at all times bear evenly upon the journal and to evenly distribute the lubricating material thereon. The inner wall of the box is hollow, and contains a sliding cut-off, Z, which fits up against the axle and preventsthe flow of oil along the same. Arms X pivoted to standards Y, engage through slots W, with said slide, and their weighted outer ends, V, operate to hold said slide at all times close up to the shaft.
Au elliptical roller may be employed-such as shown in Fig. 3-instead of the cylindrical roller, if desired.
The lubricating attachment can be readily inserted in and removed from the car-axle box when d sired.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as HOW-- l. The combination of the removable base F, having standards G, the lever H, having arms it and weighted outer end, the frame or carrier I, having trunnions 2' i, and the roller K, with the journal of the axle and the axlebox, for containing the lubricant, the whole arranged and adapted to operate substantially as described.
2. The combination. with the slotted walls of the box, of the sliding cut-ofl Z and the weighted arms X, pivoted on the standards Y, substantially as described. v p
