4 Claims. (Cl. 19-142) This invention relates to textile machinery and more especially to a lint deflecting means for top rolls of the type used on drafting machinery such as spinning frames, drawing frames, roving frames and the like.
There have been many previous attempts to remove accumulations of loose fibers from the cots of the top rolls of spinning frames and the like, none of which have proved satisfactory. It is well known to those familiar with the art that lint accumulates around the cots of the top rolls of spinning frames and the like as small fibers become disengaged from the strand passing therethrough. A large accumulation of this lint on the top rolls may cause the distance between the top roll and the bottom roll to be varied to such an extent as to thereby adversely affect the drafting of the yarn passing therethrough. Fibers also frequently accumulate between the ends of the top rolls and the adjacent bearing or neck portions and interfere with the proper rotation of the rolls.
This application is a continuation-in-part of my copending application entitled Improved Top Roller, Serial No. 176,141, filed July 27, 1950, now Patent Number 2,595,041 of April 29, 1952, and the present invention is directed to improvements in said top roller.
it is an object of this invention to provide a top roll assembly comprising a shaft on which a pair of spaced top rolls are fixedly mounted and having a sleeve or roller neck rotatably mounted on the medial portion of the shaft closely adjacent the proximate ends of the two rolls, said rolls having a plurality of notches or cutouts in the ends thereof adjacent the roller neck and in the peripheries thereof. The roller neck is also provided with a plurality of peripherally spaced notches in the opposed ends thereof. These notches serve to break up any accumulation of lint on the roll or the roller neck and also prevent lint and the like from becoming compacted between the proximate ends of the rolls and the roller neck thereby insuring continuous, smooth operation of the top roll assembly.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a set of top and bottom rolls of a spinning frame or the like and showing the same in association with the usual weight member or saddle and one roll stand;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view showing the improved top rolls in association with portions of the bearings for supporting the top rolls and saddle;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the top rolls, taken along the line 33 in Figure 2 and showing the manner in which the notches in the rolls and roller neck coincide to disengage fibers accumulated thereabout;
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially along the line 44 in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially along the line 5-5 in Figure 3.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 14) indicates a roll stand board, only a portion of which is shown in cross-section in Figure 1, on which a plurality of roll stands 11 are mounted, only one of which is shown in the drawings. The roll stands 11 have suitable bearing portions therein in which are mounted front. middle and back bottom corrugated rolls 12, 13 and 14, respectively. The roll stands 11 are usually spaced a substantial distance apart from each other and have .23, each of which may be identical and which coincide with the respective bottom rolls 12, 13 and 14. Since the top rolls 21, 22 and 23 are all identical, only the middle top roll or member 22 is shown in detail in Figures 2 to 5, inclusive, and a detailed description Will :be given of the roll 22 only.
The top rolls 21, 22 and 23 are urged into engagement with the coinciding bottom rolls 12, 13 and 14 by a first saddle 24 and a second saddle 25, the first saddle 24 engaging suitable roller necks of the middle and back top rolls or members 22 and 23 and the second saddle 25 engaging the upper surface of an identical roller neck of the first top roll 21. The top rolls or members 21, 22 and 23 are provided to hold a sliver S in engagement with the upper surfaces of the respective bottom rolls 12, 13 and 14 as the sliver S travels from the back rolls 14 and 23 to the front rolls 12 and 21. The first saddle 24 has a slot 27 therein which is loosely penetratedby a link member 28 which is pivotally connected, as at 30, to the medial portion of the second saddle 25.
The link member 28 curves rearwardly and downwardly from the first and second saddles 24 and 25, between the back and middle top and bottom rolls and its lower end is slidably penetrated by a weight lever 31 having a hook portion on one end thereof and being disposed within an eye bolt 32 threadably secured in the top roll board 111. The weight lever 31 extends rearwardly from the lower end of the link 28 and has a suitable weight 33 on the rear end thereof for applying pressure to the first and second saddles 24 and 25 to thereby apply pressure to the top rolls or members 21, 22 and 23 and to press the same towards the respective bottom rolls 12, 13 and 14. Since these top rolls or members 21, 22 and 23 are similar to the top rolls shown in my present co-pending application only a brief description thereof is deemed necessary.
Referring to Figures 2,3, 4 and 5, it will be noted that the top roll assembly 22 comprises tubular rollers or members 22: and 22b which are fixedly mounted, as by set screws 35, on an arbor or shaft 36, opposed ends of which are adapted to have rotational movement in the corresponding cavities 211 of the top roll support members 17. Each of the tubular rollers or members 22a and 22b has adhesively or otherwise secured thereto suitable cots 37. These cots 37 may be of any desired material such as rubber, leather, fabric and the like and it is preferred that the peripheral surfaces of the tubular rollers or members 22a and 22b be roughened or grooved to insure that the corresponding cot 37 may be fixedly secured on the same.
The tubular rollers or members 22a and 22b are spaced substantially apart from each other and a roller neck broadly designated at 49, having enlarged end portions 41 and 42, is disposed between the proximate ends of the tubular rollers or members 22a and 22b. The enlarged end portions 41 and 42 define a peripheral groove 43 extending around the center of the roller neck 40 adapted to receive the saddles or any suitable weight member.
The opposed ends of the roller neck member 40 are recessed for reception of the outer race of a ball or antifriction bearing 45, as by a pressed fit, the inner race of the ball bearing 45 being secured to the arbor 36 as by a pressed fit to permit the inner race of the ball bearing 45 to rotate in the outer race of the bearing 45 with the arbor 36. The adjacent ends of the tubular roller members are recessed slightly to receive a portion of the outer races of the ball bearings as is more fully described in my said co-pending application.
It is thus seen that as the middle bottom roll 13 is driven the weight member 33 tends to pull the top middle roll member 22 into engagement with the middle bottom roll 13 to cause the top middle roll member 22 to rotate along with the arbor 36. Although, the arbor 36 may rotate, the roller neck member 40 will be held against rotation by the first saddle 24 pressing against the same. It is thus seen that the roller neck member 40 will remain stationary as the two top middle rolls or members 22 rotate adjacent each end thereof.
The proximate ends of the tubular rollers or members 22a and 22b and the roller neck member 40 are closely spaced but do not frictionally engage each other and, frequently, fibers from the sliver S will accumulate at this juncture of the rollers with the roller neck. Therefore, in order to overcome this defect, there is provided a plurality of spaced notches 50 in the periphery of the inner ends of the tubular rollers or members 22:: and 22b adjacent the roller neck 40. There is also provided a plurality of notches 51 on the outer periphery of each end of the roller neck member 40 which coincide at times with the notches 50 in the top rollers or members 22a and 22b.
It is obvious that as the two tubular rollers or members 22a and 22b rotate adjacent the stationary roller neck member 40, any collection of fibers or lint that may collect at the juncture of the roller neck member 40 and the rolls or members 22 will be broken up as these notches 50 and 51 pass each other to prevent any collection of this lint. The notches 50 and 51 in the rollers or members 22a and 22b and the roller neck member 40 act as cutters or lint deflectors to break up the lint into small particles as they pass adjacent each other, allowing the fine particles of lint to fall down onto the roll stand board where they can be easily removed and will not affect the sliver S passing between the top rolls or members 21, 22 and 23 and the bottom rolls 12, 13 and 14.
Any desired number of notches 50 and 51 may be provided and it has been found that two notches diametrically spaced on each roll or member and two notches diametrically spaced on each end of the roller neck member serve to deflect the lint and prevent accumulation thereof. The rolls or members 21 and 23 and their corresponding roller necks or members are constructed in a like manner for the same purpose.
It is thus seen that there is provided a lint deflector for top rolls of textile processing machines comprising the ends of said top rolls and the proximate ends of the adjacent roller neck positioned between the top rolls each being provided with a plurality of spaced cutouts or notches adapted to coincide upon rotation of the rolls to deflect fibers or lint therefrom.
In the drawings and specification, there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a descriptive and generic sense only, and are not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. An improved top roll assembly for spinning frames, twisters, roving frames and the like comprising a shaft, a pair of axially spaced top rolls fixed on said shaft, a roller neck positioned between said top rolls and rotatably mounted on said shaft, the opposed ends of the roller neck being positioned in closely spaced relation to the inner ends of the rolls, the ends of the rolls adjacent the ends of the roller neck being provided with a plurality of notches spaced about the periphery thereof, the opposed ends of the roller neck being provided with a plurality of notches spaced about the periphery thereof, whereby upon rotation of the rolls, the notches therein will coincide with the notches on the proximate ends of the roller neck to deflect fibers being processed by said rolls and to prevent the accumulation of lint between the ends of the rolls and the roller neck.
2. An improved top roll assembly for spinning frames, twisters, roving frames and the like comprising a shaft, a pair of axially spaced top rolls fixed on said shaft, a roller neck positioned between said top rolls and rotatably mounted on said shaft, the opposed ends of the roller neck being positioned in closely spaced relation to the inner ends of the rolls, the ends of the rolls adjacent the ends of the roller neck being provided with a pair of notches, diametrically spaced about the periphery thereof, the opposed ends of the roller neck being provided with a pair of notches diametrically spaced about the periphery thereof, whereby upon rotation of the rolls, the notches therein will coincide with the notches on the proximate ends of the roller neck to deflect fibers being processed by said rolls and to prevent the accumulation of lint between the ends of the rolls and the roller neck.
3. An improvement in top roll assemblies for machinery employed in drafting textile fibers, said top roll assemblies including a shaft having two axially alined closely spaced members mounted thereon for rotational movement relative to each other, said improvement comprising the proximate ends of said members being of substantially the same diameter, each member having at least one notch in the periphery thereof and the notches being disposed in the proximate ends of said members whereby, upon relative rotational movement between said members, the notch on one member moves past the notch on the other member to thereby deflect any lint cast from said fibers as they are processed.
4. An improved top roll assembly comprising a shaft, a roller fixed on said shaft, a roller neck in which at least a portion of said shaft is rotatably mounted, the proximate ends of the roller and the roller neck being of substantially the same external diameter and having sliding contact with each other, and the proximate ends of the roller and the roller neck each having at least one depression in the outer periphery thereof whereby, upon rotation of said roller, the depression thereon moves past the depression in the roller neck to deflect any lint or other matter which may accumulate on the proximate portions of the roller and the roller neck.
