Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY YY. I-IENLEY, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ALBERT PALMER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW' JERSEY.
VENTILATING-BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,946, dated January 24, 1860.
T o all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. HENLEY, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ventilating-Bedstead; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked upon the same.
A shows an ordinary bedstead; B the mattress formed of a series of serrated sections; C the clock-workb)T which the fans are or tanning apparatus is operated.
D D are two fans placed directly beneath the mattress and operated by the clock work C.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching to an ordinary bedstead, one or more fans, or a tanning apparatus, which being used in conjunction with a mattress formed of a series of serrated sections combined (as shown at B) and being driven or propelled by means of clock-work t C) shall operate in such a manner that a current of air shall constantly be driven up through the serrated mattress as to ventilate the bed clothing and keep the person sleeping perfectly cool and comfortable.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will describe its construction and operation.
To an ordinary bedstead A, a clock-work is attached in any desired position beneath the slats of the same. Connected with this I clock-work by means of the shaft E, and operated by the same, are the two fans (D D), placed directly beneath the mattress com posed of a series of serrated sections (B). A valance placed around the bottom of the bedstead and shown in the model accompanying this specification serves to confine the air, which is driven through the serrated mattress and as before stated answers the purpose of Ventilating the bed clothing and keeping the person or persons sleeping cool and comfortable. The apparatus being thus arranged, the clock-work being wound up the fans will be operated in such a manner as to produce the desired eiifect.
I do not however intend to confine my in* Vention to the use of oscillating fans as herein shown. I am fully aware that fans having a rotary motion may be used, also fans that vibrate.
any substitutes may be used for the mattress formed by combining the serrated section, as a serrated sacking &c.
That I claim as new and desire to secure' by Letters Patent is- Combining one or more fan or fans, with the mattress formed of the serrated sections or its equivalent device, when the same shall be arranged and operated in the manner described and for the purpose specified.
HENRY W. HENLEY.
