1 Claim. (Cl. 81-46) My invention relates to locking chuck pliers and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide locking chuck pliers of this class which are particularly useful to watchmakers or other craftsmen working a large variety of small parts.
Second, to provide locking chuck pliers of this class which provide for very rapid gripping and releasing action which saves considerable time in handling small and hard to handle or delicate parts.
Third, to provide locking chuck pliers of this class which are very useful to a watchmaker in removing rollers from timepiece movements.
Fourth, to provide locking chuck pliers of this c lass which are particularly useful in removing cannon pinions from timepiece movements.
Fifth, to provide locking chuck pliers of this class which serve the watchmaker in tightening second hands.
Sixth, to provide locking chuck pliers of this class adapted to hold staves for grinding hubs therefrom:
Seventh, to provide locking chuck pliers` of this class which are very useful for pulling wire through diesr Eighth, to provide locking chuck pliers of this class which are very useful for placing fine parts in pin vises or the like.
Ninth, to provide locking chuck pliers o f this class which utilize standard chucks used in various watchmakers lathes.
Tenth, to provide locking chuck pliers of this class which are useful in removing tine parts from a lathe or placing them therein.
Eleventh, to provide locking chuck pliers of this class which are very useful in holding work during filing operations thereon.
Twelfth, to provide locking chuck pliers of this class having numerous uses and which provide for the saving of time and certain mechanical advantages, particularly in the watch making art and other related arts wherein small parts are handled, machined and assembled; and
Thirteenth, to provide locking chuck pliers of this c lass which are very simple and economical of construction, eflicient in operation and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claim. Reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the chai:- acters of reference thereon forming a part of this application in which:

Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The chuck holder 1, chuck 2,-handle levers 3 and 4, links 5 and 6, chuck draw bar 7, pins 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 and the locking member 14 constitute the principal parts and portions of my locking chuck pliers.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the chuck holder 1 is provided with opposed extending boss portions 1a and 1b to which the handle levers 3 and 4 respectively are pivotally mounted by means of the pins 8 and 9 respec- 2,694,327 Patented Nov. 16, 1954 tively. The links 5 and 6 are pivotally connected to the levers 3 and 4 respectively by means of the pins 10 and 11 respectively and the opposite ends of the links 5 and 6 are connected to opposite ends of the chuck draw bar 7 by means of the pins 12 and 13 respectively. The chuck holder 1 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings is provided with an internal bore portion 1c having an enlarged internally tapered chuck seat 1d at the end thereof adapted to receive the conventional watchmakers lathe chuck 2, the shank 2a of which is provided with screw threads 2b screw threadably engaged by the internal screw threads 7a of the chuck draw bar 7. The lock member 14 is an externally calibrated cylindrical member having internal threads 14a screw threadably engaging the external threads 13 on the outer side of the chuck holder 1.
The operation of my locking chuck pliers is substan tially as follows:
When it is desired to grasp a small pin or cylindrical part, the chuck 2, at its normally open end 2c, is placed over the part to be grasped, the handle levers 3 and 4 are then forced together causing them to pivot on the pins 8 and 9 forcing the links 5 and 6 backwardly toward the ends 3a and 4a of the handles 4 which retracts the chuck 2 in connection with the draw bar 7 causing said chuck 2 at its quadrant portion 2d to be compressively contracted in the converging bore 1d which engages a part intermediate said quadrants 2d and this part may be held by continued pressure on the handle levers 3 and 4 or the locking member 14 may be screw threadably moved on the threads 1e to the position as indicated by dash lines A in Fig. 2 of the drawings in engagement with the chuck draw bar 7 which maintains tension applied initially by means of the handle levers 3 and 4 so that actual manual pressure thereon may be relieved and supported by said locking member 14. The part in the quadrant 2d of the chuck 2 may be instantly released by screw threadable movement of the locking member 14 at its threads 14a engaged with the threads 13 on the chuck holder 1. It will be noted that any chuck used in a watchmakers lathe or any other similar lathe may be accommodated by my locking chuck pliers and may be inserted therein and screw threadably engaged with the chuck draw bar 7 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings thus various parts of varying diameter may be readily held and locked in my locking chuck pliers for performing various operations thereon. It will be here noted that the nut 14 may be tightened against the draw bar 7 until the chuck 2 is tight, then the levers 3 and 4 may be squeezed for additional tightening of the chuck 2 the mount of such additional tightening being measured, if desired, by noting the amount of rotation of the calibrated nut required to again tighten the same against the draw bar 7.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the scope of my invention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In chuck pliers, a collet type chuck with a threaded shank, a chuck holder having a tapered bore receiving the chuck, levers pivoted on opposite sides of said holder, a member having a threaded bore receiving the shank of said chuck, links pivotally connecting said member with said levers, each link extending at an angle from said member in the direction toward the first pivot of the corresponding lever, and chuck-locking means adiustably mounted on said holder and in engagement with said member when in locking position.
