SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,395, dated December 19, 1882, Application filed May 17, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. DOUGHERTY, of Sedgwick, in the county of Saguaehe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Hoisting and Dumping Ores and other Materials, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My. improved apparatus is intended for use at mines for elevating the ore upon inclined shafts, and may be used for hoisting or moving other materials, either upon level or inclined tracks or upon vertical ways.
The invention consists in a bucket or box, of semi-cylindrical form, hungin atruck-frame, and held to the track by guide-rollers, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved hoisting apparatus as fitted for vertical hoisting. Fig. 2 is a cross'sectiou of the box or bucket in position for use upon a level track.
A is the box or bucket, made of suitable m aterial and of semi-cylindrical form. B B are the supporting-frames, of arched form, to and between which the bucket is pivoted at a. As shown most clearly in Fig. 2, the lower ends of the arches B are forked to receive the flanged wheels I) b, which take upon the rails 0. Upon the outer forks of each arch or side frame, B, is attached a jointed piece, d, provided with a stud, on which is a friction-roller, e, that extends beneath the outer'fianges ot' the rails 0. The rollers e are grooved, and the flanges ot' the rails formed with downwardlyprojecting lips to enter the grooves of the rollers, so that the rollers e serve to retain the bucket-frame upon the track and prevent any side or swinging movement. These guiderollers are more especially useful when the bucket and carriage are moving upon vertical tracks, as shown in Fig. 1. The bucket or box, being hung near the top by its pivots, will always remain level and adjust itself to the inclination of the track. It is also more easily I loaded so as to balance, and when used for hoisting water it may be filled without risk of the water being spilled.
I provide for dumping the box or bucket withoutits being handled bymeans of a hooked catch, h, fitted between rails c at the upper end of the inclined way, and upon the bucket is fitted a cross-rod, i, which, coming in contact with the hook h, turns the bucket upon its pivots, so that its contents are dumped upon the chute k.
For hoisting the bucket upon avertical or inclined track, a rope, I, is attached to a bail, m, and passes upward over a drum, 0, at the top of the shaft, and from thence downward over suitable guide-rollers to the bottom of the shaft or tunnel, where a windlass will be provided for operation by hand to raise and lower the bucket. In this manner the material may be raised from the bottom of the shaft and dumped automatically without attention being required at the top of the shaft; or the rope may be attached to any power-hoist.
The frame of the bucket or box is provided with handles 12, for use in propelling the bucket and its truck upon level tracks. It will be seen that the bucket may be moved along the level track to the incline, and then up the incline, anditwill adj ust. itself to the track without risk of dumping its contents.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The apparatus for elevating ores and other materials, consisting of the semi-cylindrical box A, pivoted upon the side frames or arches, B, and supported upon the flanged wheels b b, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the flanged wheel I) and the grooved wheel 0, hung to the same frame, B, and running on a rib of the same rail, 0, as shown and described.
