WINDOW GUARD.
No. 269,372. Patented Dec. 19, 1882 'E-LA..

JONATHAN BADGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,372, dated December 19, 1882. Application filed September 9,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JONATHAN BADGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Guards, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
It is a well-known fact that when the lower sash ofa window is partially raised a current offresh air is admitted between the sashes; but this method of ventilation has hitherto been impractical, because no provision h as been made for closing the space or opening left heneath the raised sash, and the object of my invention is to produce a guard adapted to this purpose, to which end it consists in the novel combination of parts hereinafter described.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the guard applied to a window. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line as at, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the guard detached. Fig. at is a top view thereof. Fi 5 is a cross-section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the lower sash of a window, arranged in the usual manner to work in the sash-guard B, formed by or between the stop-bead and the parting-strip.
U indicates my improved guard, which is composed of the two pieces or sections 0 C of wood or other suitable material, arranged to slide upon each other in a longitudinal direction, so that the article is adjustable, the sections being guided by tenons s fixed to one and grooves t termed in the other section to receive the tenons, or by other suitable means. The guard-sections O O are provided at the other end with heads o-one to each sectionwhich are fitted to the sash-guides B of the window, they having straight vertical edges, and hence when the sash is raised the guard can be brought. directly beneath it by inserting the heads 0 in the sash-guards, as shown in Fig. 2, while the whole is thereby firmly held in position, so that no extraneous devices are required for this purpose.
Then the guard is being put in place the sections 0 are properly adjusted lengthwise so as to fit the window, and it; will be seen that by the adjustable character of the guard it is adapted to a window of any general width. When the guard has been placed in position the sash is drawn down upon it; and in order to produce a tight joint between the guard and sash, the guard-sections O C are provided with packing-strips t on the upper edge, which extend the entire length of each section, so that such strips are adjusted, together with the guard-sections, and are compressed by the sash in the required mannerin any position ot'thesections; or, in other words, when the sections are drawn apart both strips are brought into use. In the example shown the packing-strips -i are composed of india rubber.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The window-guard herein described, combining in its structure the longitudinal adj ustable sections 0 G the heads 0 at the outer ends of the sections, and the packing-strips i on the upper edges of the sections, tor the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JONATHAN BADGER.
