OUTBOARD MOTOR LOCKING DEVICE Nov. 9, 1954 Filed Sept. 2l, 1953 IN VEN TOR. Roy ZdzZZz'am Pasann #Hav-nay.
United States Patent() OUTBOARD MOTOR LOCKING DEVICE Roy William Pasanen, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada Application September 21, 1953, Serial No. 381,410
4 Claims. (Cl. 70-58) This invention relates to devices for locking in place outboard motors on transoms of boats.
A very important problem incident to the use of outboard motors resides in the lack of effective clamping means for mounting the motor on a boat transom. The weight and operating vibration of the motor is such that it is extremely diiiicult to provide a simple clamping means which will not loosen in use. Loosening of the motor mounting on the boat not only results in possible damage or loss of the motor but constitutes a hazard to occupants of the boat.
It is an object of this invention to provide an outboard motor locking device which will effectively and rigidly lock the motor to a boat transom with substantial elimination of the possibility of the motor loosening from the boat transom during operation of the motor, and which is subject to convenient and inexpensive manufacture, while being applicable to motors of a Wide range of sizes.
Another object is to provide a locking device of the type referred to which may be employed to avoid theft of the motor while attached to the boat with such device.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure l is a plan view of the device in accordance with the invention as applied to a boat transom,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device,
Figure 3 is a detail plan view of a portion of the device, and
Figure 4 is an end elevation of a slightly modified form of the device.
In the drawing, 1 is a boat transom on which the device 2 in accordance with the invention, is to be mounted.
The device 2 comprises a pair of bolts 3 arranged to extend through the transom 1 in transversely aligned relation. Each bolt preferably has a large flat head 4 for rigid engagement with the back face of transom 1. An elongated base plate 5 through which each bolt extends is adapted to be fixed to the front face of the transom, as shown. Each bolt is rigidly clamped to its plate 5 by means of a key 6 driven into a keyway 7 in the bolt and firmly anchoring the bolt against turning movement in the plate.
The bolt is fixed in place on the transom by means of a nut 8 and lock washer 9 engaging the plate 5.
An internally threaded hollow post 10 is screwthreadedly mounted on each bolt, the height of the post, with respect to the front face of the transom, being adjustable by rotating the post on the bolt.
When the post 10 has been adjusted to any desired height, a spacer washer 11 may be interposed between the nut 8 and adjacent end of the post.
The other or outer end of each post is provided with a pair of aligned ears 12 and between one such pair of ears, the end of a rod 13 is pivotally mounted by means for a pin 14 for swinging movement about the post. The other end of the rod 13 is attened as indicated at 15 for reception between the pair of ears 12 on the other post. The portion 15 of the rod is provided preferably with a pluralit3l of holes 16, one of which is adapted to register with complementary openings 17 in the ears 12. Any suitable Din, such as the shank 18 of a padlock 19, is adapted to extend through openings 17 and a hole 16 to lock the rod 13 to the latter post.
ln use, when an outboard motor is desired to be ICC mounted on the transom 1, the device 2 is mounted thereon with its posts 10 in properly spaced relation to receive therebetween the conventional clamping bracket of the motor, with the clamping screws of the bracket, as indicated at 20, in such position that the rod 13 will be in opposite relation to the heads of the clamping screws 20. With the clamping screws 20 in clamped position on the transom, the posts 10 are adjusted as to height whereby in the locked position of the rod 13, as shown, such rod 13 will firmly engage the heads of the clamping screws, as shown.
It will thus be apparent that the clamping screws 20 will be rmly locked in clamping position by the device 2, whereby loosening of such screws is prevented.
It will also be apparent that the device 2, when employed in conjunction with padlock 19 or similar locking means, provides a convenient means for preventing unauthorized removal or theft of the motor.
The slightly modified device shown in Figure 4, includes a bolt 21 which is inclined with respect to its head 22. The post 10 mounted on the bolt 21 is thus also inclined, which may be desirable under certain circumstances. The device in this form also includes a ring 23 having one of its faces inclined and parallel with head 22 for engagement with the brace plate 5 and its other face normal to the axis of the bolt for engagement by the lock washer 9 or nut 8. It will be apparent that with the nut 8 in tightened relation, the bolt 21, in this embodiment, will be locked against rotation and thus no locking key 6, such as is provided in the other embodiment, is necessary.
While the device is subject to wide variation as to the dimensions of its elements, the following are given by way of example:
Inches Length of bolt 3 2-21/2 Diameter of head 4 2 Length of post 10 2-2Vz Length of rod 13 13-16 It will be observed that the diameter of head 4 is preferably as great as the length of bolt 3, or the major portion thereof, to provide added rigidity of mounting thereof in the transom 1.
I claim:
l. In combination with a boat transom, an outboard motor locking device comprising a pair of bolts extending through the transom said pair of bolts each having a head engaging the rear face of said transom, a hollow internally threaded post in adjustable screwthreaded engagement with each bolt, a brace plate through which each said bolt extends, fixed to the front face of said transom, means holding each said bolt in immovable relation to said brace plate, a rod having one end pivotally mounted on the end of one of said posts, and means on the end of the other of said posts for removably securing thereto the other end of said rod.
2. In combination with a boat transom and clamping screws for an outboard motor for attaching said motor to said transom, said clamping screws being in clamping engagement with said transom, a locking device comprising a pair of bolts extending through said transom and each having a head engaging the rear face of said transom, a hollow externally threaded post in adjustable screw-threaded engagement with each bolt, a brace plate through which each said bolt extends fixed to the face of said transom, means holding each said bolt m immovable relation to said base plate, a rod having one end pivotally mounted on the end of one of said posts, and means on the other end of said posts for removably securing thereto the other end of said rod, said rod being in opposed aligned relation to the heads of said clamping screws.
3. A device as defined in claim l, each said bolt head being at and being bodily inclined at an acute angle to the axis of the shank of the bolt.
4. A device as defined in claim l each said bolt head being flat, and being bodily inclined at an acute angle to the axis of the shank of the bolt, and including a ring mounted on said bolt, said ring having one end face mclmed in parallel relation to said inclined head ahdengaging saidbraplzlte; 'and its other end face nor- Number mal to the axis of the shank of said bolt for engagement 2,237,236 bgf- Yh-ff- References vCited in the le of this patent 5 T Y: 3') lh rpt F. frm: .75; :t .yr-f, Number BAINS 606145 Number N 4 Name Date Matthews Apr. 1, 1941 Telmel "..2...
