Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEErcE.
R. O. MELDRUM, OF GRIFFIN MILLS, AND AMOS B. PAXSON, OF EAST HAMBURG, NEW YORK.
CLOTHES-WRINGER.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT O. MEL- DEUM, of Gritiins Mills, and AMos B. PAX- soN, of East Hamburg, Erie county, State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful ,Improvements in Clothes-Driers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I is an elevation of our improved clothes drier, as the same is connected wit-h a wash or rinsing' tub. Fig". II is a vertical section of the same.
A represents the main sill, which supports the framework of the machine. B B two upright posts, framed into the main sill (A). (C) cross piece, framed into the posts B B near the top thereof, and connecting the same together. D pressure roller made of wood and covered with rubber gutta percha leather or other elastic material. E boxes in which the roller D has its journal bearings. These boxes are placed in grooves made in the upright posts, thereby allowing a vertical movement to the roller (F) spring, the ends of which press upon the boxes (E), the amount of pressure being regulated by the screw (G), in the cross piece (C). H roller made of wood and placed under the roller D.
I, I, are two rollers arranged on either side of the roller being supported in a horizontal frame placed between the posts (B, B,) said frame consisting of the side pieces (J, J,) and cross pieces K, K.
(L) is an endless belt or apron passing 26,914, dated January 24, 1860.
over the rollers (H, I, 1I.) The frame is supported in grooves or lnortises in the upright posts (B, B,) in such a manner that it may be moved back or forth and adjust the endless belt in reference to its position over the tub.
M is a crank connected to the roller H, and by which motion is given thereto and also to the endless apron. (N) brackets connected to the main sill (A), and furnished with set screws (O) by which the machine` is fastened to the tub.
Operation: The clothes having been washed are supposed to be placed in the rinsing tub (P) the drier being fixed thereto as described. Motion being given to the endless apron and rollers as described the clothes are taken piece by piece from the tub and spread upon the apron which carries them to the rollers (D and H) in passing between which the water will be pressed out of the clothes much more eifectually and with much greater ease and rapidity than it can be done by the common method of wringing by hand.
We do not claim any separate part of this machine as new. But we claim- The arrangement of, the elastic pressure roller (D) spring (F) roller H the side pieces (J, J,) rollers (I, 1,) and endless belt or apron (L) for the purposes of a clothes drier substantially as herein set forth.
